Mike, you are not crazy....I have seen some very nice case colors on different guns throughout my life, and they just have a special artistic feel....none are the same, they are each their own design.
Have you seen the case color frame on the new-ish classic N-frame? I think that Allen-Frame posted one here a while back....it was stunning.

My friend phenson has what I believe is a Model 21-? and it is cool.
I believe they've been made in J & K frame also but I wouldn't consider one with the lock.

It's one of the first things to catch my eye when I'm checking out a S&W revolver. The colors resulting from the case hardening process are the perfect compliment to a finely blued gun...

I love case-coloring on where it belongs. I don't think it belongs on the frame of S&W hand-ejector style revolvers....but then that's just me, and my opinion is only important to me........

Some magnificent guns here.
Yet, some folks still can't understand why anyone would look at firearms as 'collectibles'.
Clearly, they can be works of art!

The French can come up with some pretty colors, too. This is my 28 gauge Darne, the lowest grade of Darne; you can imagine what the higher grades are like.

A few years back, I found a T/C Hawken, with the box, at an estate sale. Only unusual that it was in .45 caliber, instead of .50. I knew T/C had discontinued the .45 some years back, so it was nice to get one.
When I got it home, I noted the serial number only had three digits in it. It also had a case-hardened brass trigger guard assembly on it. I figured someone had replaced the original along the way.
I called T/C on the next Monday, figuring I could get the year of manufacture for my records. I talked to customer service, and the lady told me that it was a first year gun. I happened to comment that the rifle had a case-hardened trigger guard, but she didn't know anything about that. However, if I could hold for a couple of minutes, she'd get someone who would know about it.
In just a couple of minutes a man came on the line, and proceeded to give me some details. He worked on the Hawkens for many years. The first year of production, all trigger guards were color case-hardened. At the start of the second year's production, the EPA issued regulations with which T/C couldn't comply in regards to the case-hardening process. The cost to comply was prohibitive. T/C stopped the process, and all second-year and later guns have the standard brass trigger guard.

Well, this one is an "off brand" and it's just a lowly .22 but it was so pretty I had to bring it home.

What lock?
Ahh...if it were only as easy as photoshop....
Its a 21-4. Yes, it does have a MIM trigger and hammer, internal firing pin, and the dreaded IL. It came with some little stocks that no one would be able to hang on to. So it now wears early '50's non-releived targets. It is a roundbutt (I absolutely hate roundbutt N frames worse than anything). But, ain't it purty?

What a timely thread!!!
WOW!!!
I just got a pristine Ruger single Six circa 1957 that I was going to send off to Turnbull for a case hardening. After I got the gun, it was so perfect-just a little drawer rash on one side of the recoil shield and a touch of wear on the ejector rod and barrell, that I was almost going to leave it alone.
After seeing mm6mm6's Ruger-the decision is made. Will be calling Turnbull tommorrow!
