I'm more of an "accumulator" than a "collector" because I shoot everything I get, including the .32 S&W Model 1½ that I bought sight unseen and the guy mailed to me in a bubble wrap lined envelope!
Think there's room for me?

I know there is!! I'm the same way. There is no set recipe for being a "collector" or an "accumulator". Do it however you want as long as it makes you happy, and you're enjoying yourself & your S&W's

One point for those of you who are considering joining the SWCA: The membership year is calculated on a calendar year and there is no proration of the dues. In other words, if you join in January, you get a full year for your money ($60 for first year and $40 each year thereafter); if you had joined in December, you would have gotten one month for your first year's dues, if you had joined in July, you would have gotten 6 months, etc. The sooner you get your application in, the better the first year value.

Bob,
Just for clarity-
$60 first year, $50 thereafter.
Late in the year, you can ask that your membership start the following year.
After the Fall Journal is mailed (around Nov), the new members are added.
Or, if received after the Fall Journal, full credit is given for the coming year automatically even though membership is processed immediately.

Thanks for the correction, Lee. I was remembering that several years ago when I joined late in the year I was surprised to get a renewal notice a few months later. But I do recall now that the Board did make some modifications for the late enrollments a while back.

Well, I live in the boonies like some others in this thread, but been thinking about joining. Drove into Mesquite, Texas, for the gun show this weekend. Standing in the line out front, a guy walked by carrying a nice N frame. The guy in line behind me and I both hollared at him at the same time. Turns out the guy behind me was bdgreen of this forum and SWCA. After walking the show with me and providing some interesting insights, he agreed to sponsor me. I got the app back with his signature today... it is in the mailbox with check to be picked up tomorrow. Some days it is a small world.

quinn,
You are a lucky man!. bdgreen is a great guy and you couldn't have stumbled on a better person to sponsor you.
(But a word to the wise, don't stand between him and any .22 S&W unless you want to be trampled by a Brahma bull )
Which one of you got the N Frame and what was it?

I have belonged to the Thompson Collectors Association for many years and we never put new members through the troubles the S&W Association does to join. I am quite certain full auto Thompsons cost a lot more than the average collectable S&W.

retarmy,
A couple of questions please. 1) have you ever applied for membership in the SWCA? 2) if so, what "troubles" have you experienced?
Feel free to PM if you desire.

(1) No, reason, see 2 (2)Having to go through the process of having a sponsor and the like. The process starts off with a lack of trust.

retarmyaviator,
I'm sorry that you have interpreted the requirement for a sponsor to be a lack of trust. When you joined this Forum, I believe that Lee required you to give him some information about yourself so it's not too unusual. It is simply an attempt to get to learn a little about someone and what their collecting interests are. It's just an attempt to get to know someone with whom we hope to have a long and enjoyable relationship. When I talk with someone about joining, I also try to get a feel if that person will "play well with the other children".
You are quite right that the average Thompson exceeds the average S&W in value (Thanks, primarily to Uncle Sam's regulations!). However, with membership in the SWCA, an individual is given the opportunity for free access to an annual meeting where millions of dollars of museum grade collectibles are available.
I believe that there is an application posted on this Forum and I, along with numerous others, have repeatedly offered to sponsor someone who is interested. That's a pretty simple "process" so if someone has $60 and a real desire to join the SWCA, the only reason I see that they shouldn't give it a shot is their inertia.

The point I believe that is being missed is that both organizations have conventions and displays with free access to millions of dollars worth of collectibles.

Actually, I don't mind being checked out. I underwent CLEO and FBI checkouts for my SMG. You can get on Knob Creek's mailing list simply by showing up a time or 2, and it scares me to think Wiklileaks could post that mailing list on the web. Think target rich environments...
BTW, neigher Bdgreen nor I got the passing N frame...

My application and check went in the mail Sat. Thanks to 29aholic for sponsoring me and for your time on the phone. I truly appreciate it.
I also sent a membership check to the S&WHF along with a request for some additional info on a gun I purchased last Sept.

My application went out today.
Thanks to 29aholic for sponsoring me.
Now I guess that I will have to go to the Tulsa show to meet some of the members.

Personally I run a rescue mission and homeless shelter for S&W revolvers. My problem is I live so so far from anything. Once you get to the boonies you keep going until there are no longer any evidence of insect strikes on the windshield or road kill. When you get to that point we are another 100 miles down on the left.
