Most careers that involve designing mechanical systems require an engineering degree. Engineers use software, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc. as a tool in the design and manufacture of their product. If you are interested in designing, I would encourage you to continue your education and look into a good engineering school. You should probably look at the curriculum, see what classes are involved, and consider aptitude testing (if you haven't already). I've been a practicing engineer for 26 years and it can be a rewarding, interesting career.

Don't all engineers still need CAD operators? I know they do in the west. I have heard the E. coast is different though. Out here the CAD operator is a specialized career path from designing or engineering.

All of the CAD operators I know and have worked with are engineers. However, my entire career has been at the same company so my exposure to the rest of the engineering industry is limited.
