ADVICE! Want to gift a gun to my son in California.
I am leaving soon on a flight to California to visit my son and daughter-in-law.
I have a handgun I want to take with as a gift to my son.
Is this possible? I have carried a gun to other states via airlines before but not CA.
I am a resident of Indiana, my son is a resident of California (sorry for him).
I want to take a Browning High Power or a Sig 228.
Once again is it possible for me to take on flight?
Also what alternitives do I have?
Of course I will confirm any suggestions, so please advise how I may do this as well.
THANKS FOR ALL HELP!
Fred aka HappyHunter

Best just to ship it from a local FFL to one near him that he contacts prior to. Also make sure it's on California's "Accepted" list.

I doubt either of those guns (with hi-cap mags) are on the California "approved" list. Best check that out first.

Forgive me, but when did the word gift go from a noun to a verb???
Although I like to give stuff to people, I will NEVER EVER gift anything to anyone.

Wail hail, bro. Yer behind the times! It's a verb per my 1929 Websters New International Dictionary of the English Language. (Somewhat to my surprise, admittedly! )

One of the most important "fumble rules" (right behind "don't use no double negatives") is "never verbize a noun." And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.

Well, it shouldn't be. I grew up with disrespect being used as an adverb and I still refuse to use it as a verb. Same with gift, I grew up using it as a noun. Old fart grousing I guess

My client got sentenced because of a conjunction with an unwilling participant.
Reminds me of the LSU boy that went to Harvard Grad skule.
Asked the professor "Where is the graduate skule building at?"
"Sir, at Harvard, one doesn't end a sentence with a preposition-please reformulate your inquiry."
The reply- "Where is the graduate skule building at, a------.!"
Klas dismissed

Shouldn't that be *, a------?"*
Just sayin'
To the OP - You want advice? IF neither gun is on the Cal Approved List (disgusting!) then trade one of them for something that is on the list and put it into your checked luggage ( following the rules for such things) and then just give him the gun.
Flying with a checked gun has never been a problem for me. Just follow the simple rules.

Oak Tree Gun Club, right of I -5. I have done transfers there & is about as hassle free as it gets in Ca. They are open to the public & also have pistol ranges & trap/skeet range.

You can take it on the plane just the same as if you were going anywhere else.
Since you are his father the Roster does not apply. Make sure that you do not import any "high capacity magazines". If the mags hold more than 10 rounds you need to disassemble them or permanently limit the capacity to 10 rounds.
While you are in CA, go with you son to an FFL and complete the transfer. It should cost no more than $35. He will have to wait 10 days before picking it up.
You could ship it to an ffl in CA but it will cost him more money. It will be treated like an ffl transfer and there is no limit on the fees that they can charge. This service generally costs $100 or more. The roster still does not apply.
In either case the ffl may require a 10 round mag to go with the gun so that your son can complete the safety demonstration.

The roster does not apply to this transfer, you can give him either one or both. I hope he appreciates it.

Well, taking the gun did not happen (yet)...but we did visit Oak Tree Gun Club, great place and people.
They agree: Roster does not apply, send 10 round mags, complete transaction to make legal.
Belgum Browning is California Bound in a few weeks.
Thanks for all the help!

ckprax- Where are these CA FFLs doing transfers for $35? My transfers to CA always cost the buyer at least $100 if they can find an FFL who will do it which is very hard.
wbraswell- I'd watch that pious condemnation of CA what with the national laws coming down the pike in the wake of the CT shooting. It's not the gun owners in CA who made the bad laws there, they are out voted at the polls. Sort of like what happened to conservatives last November, ya know? THAT'S how it happens. Don't get on your high horse and blame CA gun owners. This has been forced on them by the liberal voting majority.

If you have problems
If you have problems transferring those to California, I have an FFL dealer nearby and you can send them to me! And in SC there aren't any unreasonable restrictions (yet). Seriously, nice gift.

My personal "pro bono" on the subjects are---he is your son---drive that car of yourun over to his house and give the boy what you want him to have---all legal questions and language difficulties have been properly solved.
Whut is a/or is it an, adverb?
Blessings
