Cool pic. Looks like a Colt (Browning) 1895.
Wonder if the elephant is gunbroke?

"Is that what they call an elephant gun?", asked the private.
"Yes, now be careful picking up the brass", said the sergeant.

That photo is an obvious joke/put on. there is no tie downs or mounting equipment or a way to control the poor beast. Can you imagine his reaction at the first burst of fire, and what would become of the Marine and his gun?

If that young Marine pulls the trigger he's gonna fall flat on his butt. And who knows how far the other one will have to chase the elephant

I'd say if he drops the hammer on that tater digger, he might be picking up more than just brass.

I'd put a larger wager on the gunner ending up elephant-broke.

That looks like something a Marine would do. As my old gunny used to say "it's good enuf for government work".

Great picture, couldn't agree more! Adaptive, innovative... Who else would mount a machine gun on an elephant.....?
Little known historical fact - Machine Gun elephants were used for the straight ahead frontal assaults....Marines riding Tigers with 1911's in each hand executed the flanking maneuvers. Marine Artillery manned the catapults lobbing the Elephant by-product onto their heads.

That is my idea of tiger hunting from an elephant. Keep the double rifles, give me a machine gun!
