Default A Bad Guy at Gun Show

I was at a local GS today and saw something that really made me mad. An older gentleman.. probably late 70's or older went up to sell his model 64 at a dealer table. I happened to be right there when this happened. The guy wanted to get $450 but the dealer wasn't interested. I turned to ask him to see the gun and another guy jumped in front of me, grabbed the guys gun then boxed me out like a ball player to buy it from him. The dealer was so mad he made them take their business away from his table. I followed them about 10 feet and was trying to get the older man's attention. I wasn't any longer interested in seeing the gun as much as I was about him getting low balled. I got the older man's attention once to tell him I would look at it too but I think he was too intimidated by this guy. This buyer finally got the guy to agree to $300. I think he just wanted to get it over with. I walked away shaking my head. There are some really good people in this world and then there are some ....... The strange thing is the buyer never even opened the action to see what the model # or what dash it was. I really think he just enjoyed the thrill of acquisition by intimidation.

Unfortunately our "sport" or activity, has jerks too.
Most can be found at Gunshows any given weekend.

I am less and less patient with rude people as I get older. I'm afraid I would have gotten in his face or stood beside them advising the older gentleman what his revolver was really worth. If the punk who jumped in front of you got aggressive, I am certain the local gendarmes would have enjoyed helping out.

+1 A10. The older I get, I don't tolerate rude people. Why should I?

Default I once had a ffl and sold at shows, There are all kinds of people.

I had shared a table with a friend at a gun show in Ventura California,Back when Bill Clinton was in office. Well, before weapons had to be cable locked they could be laid on the table. Some people would just pick them up work the actions and when they would put them back some would almost toss them back onto the table, sometimes bumping another firearm. I had to scold these people and tell them nobody wants to buy a scratched rifle or pistol. So out came the sign ,must have permission to handle. Some clowns would even try to dissasemble the pistols just to try to impress a friend with them at the time. With no intention of buying. But the one that really got to me was a man wanting to buy a 25 cal beretta from me,whips out three 50 dollar bills and basiclly tosses them at me like you would throw 3 playing cards at once. He was very rude and I said sorry,no more sale, cancelled. He got angry and out of hand. The show master came over ,I explained and he was escorted form the building with his two friends. He was middle eastern. People need to show some respect for sellers and their property.

Lotsa clowns today think that paying the price of admission entitles them to act like jerks. Ask permission to handle you say? They feel that they are entitled to do anything they like with your merchandise and if you feel otherwise then you're the one that's out of line. When I caught one handling any of my stuff I would hold one of my ask premission to handle signs in their face and inquire if they had learned to read. Usually they left in a hurry without any comment or argument.

Possible an ex-felony that wanted a weapon or a car trunk/shade tree dealer.

Here in WA at the WAC Shows, the security staff is very much on the spot when trouble arises. The shows are run like a tight ship and few problems of any kind are apparent. One cannot buy anything unless you are a WAC member, which cuts most of the problem children out. I had a non-member try to buy a rifle from me several shows back and I told him to get his membership. He left the show.

I think, for the most part, gun people are among the nicest people I know but, I've met my share of rude folks at gun shows on both sides of the table.

Well, there are gun people like us on the forum. There are gun people wanna be's everywhere. There is a difference. I don't go to gun shows as much as I used to. I'm tired of tripping over people whose only reason for being there is to buy 10,000 rounds of AK ammo.

Best, Rick

I kinda double posted but think I caught it. You know, I've been taking my Boys to gun shows for a long time. They like the Tacticool stuff, naturally but they also appreciate pencil barreled Smiths.

To us, a gun show is a walk through history. Where else can you see a flintlock and a mini gun in the same place? There are wheelers and dealers everywhere.

Again, Rick

Gun shows will soon be a thing of the past. Attendance is falling, dealers are over pricing their firearms, venues are over pricing their buildings, insurance companies are charging more to cover firearm events, the goverment is working to restrict them and we go most to see guns than buy.

Those individuals I see selling guns do so expecting to get a low figure. It is just quick cash to them for an item they no longer want. People selling anything to a dealer gets less than what the item is worth. FWIW: People selling guns to me get less than what they are worth and I am not a dealer.

J&G sales still are still selling used Model 64's for $270/280 listed as Very Good Condition. I have one from them that I acquired in the last year for $299 and it's really nice.

If he had sold it to the dealer he would not have received even the $300. The older gentleman did receive somewhat a fair value for a used model 64. WHAT WERE YOU GOING TO OFFER HIM?

Rude people exist, get over it, and as oldman45 says, the present day gun shows (flea markets really) are on their way out.

You'll always run into a few rude people anywhere you find a crowd. I'm not sure if most of them are rude, or just stupid. While I find one every so often at a gun show, I usually find a nicer group of people there than most other places I go where people congregate. It's been a long time since I went to a gun show and didn't have several enjoyable conversations with nice and interesting people.

people have just gotten rude...simply lacking consideration for anyone or anything but themselves..

for example.

The Niles show.. I was at a dealers table, and have purchased a few S&W's off him and become friends with him and his wife...anyhow he had a nice Garand I wanted to look at.
So I asked if I could see it, and he said sure take a look...Now, I've got it in my hands. I'm snugged up to the table, and this dingbat comes over and tried to take it out of my hands....

Now I have to admit I may have tapped him a little in the forhead with the forstock of that Garand, But I did get his attention, and let him know it's proper to wait untill someone is finished and to ask, before trying to grab a gun out of someones hand..and how anything else would be considered rude....

Yes I'm not a "people person"

I got real mad for you after you said what that jerk did. I sense it built up and hit you more afterward and you wished you said something when it happened. I'm pretty laid back and hate such confrontations but when someone cuts in line on me, for example, I'll snap. That's my biggest peeve and your thing fits into that. I was one of two people at a Kragen Auto parts counter waiting when two guys walked right past us and started talking to the clerk as if we were invisable. I literally yelled at the top of my lungs, " HEY!! That guy was next, then me!! Get to the back of the line!!" And they did. Man, was I mad. But I felt so good doing that. I would be kicking myself to this day had I done nothing. I even got an unnecessarily snarky message recently by a moderator here for what I considered eqivelent to not dotting an "i". Not my usual political gaffes where i really blow it. I just had to speak my mind in a way that had undertones of sarcasm. I didn't get, or want, the last word but I felt content. So, I sense your frustration and amazement at the rudeness of people sometimes. The gun isn't the issue. It's the jerk who got away with being a jerk. Long winded here, but I really feel for ya' on this one. I hope you feel better unloading here.

Here at some of the NY shows I would rather count on the old ladies out front selling coffee than the security staff they have. They're good at stamping your hand but most seem more like Wally world greeters than anything else. I was working a table with a friend a couple years ago when some guy picked up a shotgun off the rack, a single barrel Winchester 37 and disassembled it. I was busy helping another and so wasn't my friend before we noticed it. My buddy chewed the guy out royally and told him to pack his freight. The guy's response was "I know how to put it back together." Not realizing that wasn't the point at all. I also was helping out once when a woman was filing around and she picked up just the buttstock of a gun and said something to the effect of "I thought you needed a license to sell guns?" When my friend told her he had one she more or less dropped the gun and walked away. I chewed her out myself and told her to get lost. Between that and the ever present "I can get this gun cheaper at Dick's" which is an instant deal ender, or some hoo haw picking the gun up and pointing in the direction of a living person has put me off from ever wanting to sell guns at a gun show when I get my FFL.

Yessir, gunshows seem to consistently bring out groups of folks in their own discernable categories.

You got people who've been into firearms for long periods of time. They're generally repectful and unassuming. In their opinion, they like guns and noone should care anymore than if they were at a car show.

Then there are the blowhards who want everyone around them to know what an expert (at least in his own mind) he is. Needless to say, these guys have stuff goin' on with them that have nothing to do with firearms.

There are other types, obviously, both positive and negative, that you certainly don't need the likes of ME to go on about.

My heart soars in gratitude for the presence of the good types and all you can do for the bad ones is offer a quiet prayer at the least and at the most, point them toward the right way if they cross the line.

It became clear to me when I worked in firearms at a big-box that if you ever want to lose belief in the continued evolution and survival of the human race, work behind a gun counter.

Once again, my thanks to the gods for the real deal guys who DON'T carelessly point a gun in a neighbor's chest or act like the world's all about them, and think it admirable to pass on the necessary safe and mannerly conduct to some who may need the guidance.

I gotta agree with OLDFED on the WAC shows in W. Washington. I usually get to at least one each month, and haven't seen the shenanigans that others talk about at the shows in other areas. Members have to have a CPL or go through a background check, and they are the only ones who can buy a firearm. We all wear our badges, so it's pretty obvious who is and isn't a member.

OLDFED - maybe you can PM me and I can look you up at next weekend's show if you're there with a table.

There are always the 2 types mentioned previously on here that i've noticed. First the guys who are respectful and want to have a good day out with there friend or friends. Might buy a gun or two might not but usually will walk out with something/ammo accessories etc....
Then the Blowhards/know-it-alls or wanna bees. They have to tell their friends, at the top of their lungs usually, just about everything there is to know about gun x. I had one of these and they are a piece of **** etc...
As for the people who say the gunshows are a thing of the past with declining attendance i say go to the Indy 1500 shows and re-think your position. Even when it's Jan./Feb. and it's 10 degrees outside there are still people lined up around the building waiting to get in an hour before opening. We usually wait and go an hour or so after posted opening time and still have to wait in line for 20-30 minutes just to get in the doors. Business is brisk here anyways.

As far as declining gunshows, I haven't checked any numbers but the Wannamacher in Tulsa seems to be doimg well. As well as some lesser shows in the Tulsa area.

I dont think gun shows are going anywhere. Lately around the Philly area you cant even get through the parking lot let alone the door.

As far as rudeness goes, I'm comforted by my belief in karma. I've seen it happen.

Oldman45, I guess you weren't at the Bossier Show this past Saturday morning. The place was packed.

For all the reasons listed gun shows are not much fun any more. To crowded, HIGH prices, and all to often rude people. As Sebago Son stated, I'm not wiling to let rude folks run over me and sometimes it's necessary to let someone else know they aren't correctly which is not a lot of fun. 30+ years ago, I was in a brutal fight, somewhere in this mess I tore my left Rotator cuff, at a gun show after some clown aimed a pistol at me. Needless to say I was not PLEASED and I let him know that in very clear but non profane terms. His answer was F.U. he stepped into me and the fight was on after 3- 4 minuets of this my partner, thank goodness, got to us and we wrapped it up.

All in all gun shows are a thing of the past for me.

Oldbear, I've probably only been in 2-3 real fistfights in my day. And i'm not one to back down from anyone. Now i don't consider myself some badass and i know there are alot of guys
out there who would clean the floor with me and i'm 6-2" and go a solid 255 pounds. But if some moron points a gun a me while playing around or serious about it he'd better either
A: shoot me or
B: be ready for what's coming his way directly.
I would'nt take to getting a gun pointed at me either and i'm glad you did what you had to do. Bet the numbnuts does'nt
do it again.

There's a lot of things that I can & will overlook, but rudeness ain't one of 'em.

I second (or is it third?) people's comments about the WAC shows, I used to live in Seattle, well, grew up there. I went to WAC shows often enough. I enjoyed 'em, but I actually found a lot of the dealers at the shows to be rude to some degree, if not just elitist. Not many rude people actually at the shows. Now living in Louisiana, I've found the opposite to be true at shows. Rude customers/show goers, and polite dealers... meh, your mileage may indeed vary...

this, unfortunately, is a daily occurrence, when dealing with humans, who by their very nature are inferior.
