Default AK's

Am I the only one who can't see the sights on the damned things? Do Russians really have that much better eyes?

I don't know that I've ever actually seen anyone try to use the sights on a AK. I thought you just strapped it across your shoulder, let it dangle about waist high, and blast away. Least ways, that's how it's always shown in the terrorist movies.

If you look at the better AK clones such as the Valmet and Galil you'll note that the rear sight is moved back onto the dust cover for improved eye relief...

Most of the folks who use them for social purposes don't bother looking at the sights. That's why it has a 30-round magazine.

Funny thing is the sights on my Russian Saiga actually work great for me and most rifle sights dont. I hit a 6" balloon at 200 yards for extra points at a military rifle match a few weeks ago. Many years ago I had a day at the range with a real deal MP-5 HK. Loved the HK sights. A few weeks back I had the money for a GSG HK 22cal clone, Put it up to my shoulder and the sights were a blur, getting old sucks. I guess the farther away the rear sight the better for me.

AK sights are not great, but I find them better than any Mauser sights, except the Swede Model 1896.

+1

I always enjoyed the simplicity of the basic AK, I've got a CAI Maddi that I thought I'd never have to replace...but I'm gonna go w/ Eotech on an M4 from now on...iron sights are for those under age 45...

(I know I could get a rail on the AK but it's a real dog...paid under $300 for it new ten years or so ago - the Eotech would be worth more than the rifle!)

Da comrade, you shoot magazine at advancing imperialist tank, then jam treads with your body!
Mother Russia thank you with flowers after glorious victory over imperialistic dogs.

There is someone building the rear cover with a ghost ring sight on it. Should be better for older shooters. A tactical sized lower power scope is also nice if you have an AK that is an accurate one, and there are quite a few. I have an M-70-ab2 yugo that is. Red dots are good for less than 50 yds.

Vodka, where's the vodka?? LOL ----By the way, I have an AMD-65 with the four inch snake-brake. It is VERY accurate. I don't know why, but it is a tack driver. The sights are ok, but I won't change a thing on it the way it shoots.

I just went through the same thing with my GP-1975 (Romanian style) and was all set to put the Krebs Ghost Ring rear sight on it..........then Midway ran out of them. I had bought a replacement receiver cover with a rail mount on it, but I don't have a lot of faith in it holding zero. So I put the original cover back on, got out a tri-cornered file, and opened up the rear sight notch to where my old eyes can actually see it. The tiny little notch that was on it before was about the diameter of a mechanical pencil lead, now it's about 3/16" across the top. I shot it a few days ago and at 25 yards, I got a nice cluster two inches over the bullseye, perfectly centered. A black Sharpie took care of the glare from the fresh-cut sight blade. I may still order the Krebs rear sight.......or I may spend the $65 it costs on ammo!
