Default My brother thinks....

My brother, a rather brilliant geologist with wide ranging interests watches "The French Connection' often. He says if he doesn't see it three or four times a year he feels deprived. He just thinks it's that good of a movie. Most of what I remember is the car chase but I'll have to go back and examine it more closely.

For me, it's the Godfather and Dirty Harry. I'm nuts about the movie 'M' with Peter Lorre and have watched it many times. If you can consider 'Macbeth' a crime movie (I mean he murdered the king and usurped the throne) it's a fave too. However there is not detective, he is his own downfall.

Dirty Harry
The French Connection
Bullitt
The Seven-Ups
Goodfellas
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (well, it is about stealing stolen gold)

If you enjoyed "Heat", check out "The Sweeney" on NetFlix. It is a film adaptation of a 1970s British TV series.

  • "The Usual Suspects" - Something new each time I watch it.
  • "In The Heat of The Night"
  • "Kiss Me Deadly" (Yeah, I know. It's more Film Noir).
  • "Bullitt" - The ultimate in chase scenes, and the 2.5" Diamondback.
  • "The French Connection" #2 Chase scene.
  • "Heat" Pacino and De Niro facing off. Could have omitted Amy Brennerman
OK, OK! I know I can't count!

The above are my top five. But, it's hard to leave off:
  • "The Godfather I, II" (III was horrible)
  • "Thief"
  • "Mulholland Falls" (Jennifer Connelly is extremely hot!)
  • "LA Confidential" What's not to like about Kim Basinger?
  • "The Getaway" (Version One - Steve McQueen, Ali McGraw)
  • "Reservoir Dogs"
  • "Pulp Fiction"
  • "No Country For Old Men"
  • "Fargo" - Campy, but I like it.

In "Pulp Fiction", Ving Rhames delivers one of the best lines ever: "What now? I'll tell you what now..."

So many good ones, so little space!

I can't believe we are more than 100 threads into this thread and we've haven't had a mention of a single Mamet classic?!

First of all - HOUSE OF GAMES is the single best crime film ever made. Period. If you haven't seen it, the first 10 minutes are mind-numblingly boring -- but stick with it! What a roller coaster!

Other Mamet crime classics include:

--The Spanish Prisoner (Steve Martin in a dramatic role!)
--Heist (Gene Hackman at his best)
--Spartan (Val Kilmer in a thriller that jumps into the action right away)
--Homicide (an all-time classic cop story)

Any of these five films rank up in the top crime movies of all time, easily. But House of Games is the undisputed champion!

White Heat.
The Roaring Twenties.
The original: Scarface w/Paul Muni.
I escaped From a Chain Gang w/Paul Muni.

However, THE BEST Crime movie is: He Walked by Night w/ Richard Basehart,Whit Bissel and Scott Brady.

Many favourites already mentioned here.

I can add one: 'The Suicide Kings.' An excellent movie with several names that went on to greater things, headlined by the great Christopher Walken.

Most of the action takes place in a single room and you are drawn into the story by the strength of the actors. The final plot twist finishes the movie beautifully.

Well worth a watch.

I posted earlier on this thread and probably should not have two bites at the apple. However, in addition to the many fine crime films previously mentioned I would add one to the list: City of Industry. This 1997 film starred Harvey Keitel at his most intense. If you like Keitel then you will enjoy this one.

I can't argue with any of the above mentioned but here's a couple of offbeat ones. I'm a big Coen Bros. fan.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Burn Before Reading
Blood Simple
The Ladykillers
Fargo (my favorite)

Default SO MANY REALLY GOOD ONES FROM THE 30'S TO PRESENT.

To pick only 5 TODAY, I'll go with THE STING, THE MALTESE FALCON, HEAT, THE GODFATHER, SCARFACE with Pacino, but both are excellent. If you consider transporting beer illegaly across state lines, the great one JACKIE GLEASON was terrific in SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT.
"When I get home I'm gonna punch your Mama in the mouth", alone deserves mention.

Default Crime Movies

Always liked "The Getaway" with Steve McQueen.

McQueen goes in a gun shop and says something like "Give me a 12 gauge shotgun - a pump - and some double ought buck." Directed by Sam Peckinpah, same guy who did "The Wild Bunch."

If you like film noir, watch Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. Yes, it's Steve Martin, but the interaction with the film noir stars from the 40s and 50s is extremely well done, and it also stars Rachel Ward. Directed by Carl Reiner, who also plays the butler. Alan Ladd, Grace Kelly, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, Cagney, among many others.
