I'm not an electrician and have always been confused by this . . .
Is amperage not a measure of electrical current draw?
When we do amperage checks on motors at work, we are trying to determine the condition of the motor's windings. I already know the horsepower rating and higher-than-rated amperage usually indicates excessive wear. What does "higher amperage" have to do with the effectiveness of a vaccuum cleaner?
Is this another example of the faulty logic that the more electricity that it uses, the greater its' performance?
As an example: In the residential water supply business, we frequently have customers who request a higher horsepower pump than what is required for their wells. Their misunderstanding is that more horsepower equates to more water. And this is simply not true. The horse power of a properly sized pump motor is based on several factors: Static water lever, total dynamic head, (tdh) supply line size, supply line distance, etc. The desired amount of water delivered is received by matching the proper size motor to the proper sized pump! A well pump consists of two primary components; a motor and a pump end. A vaccuum cleaner consists of two primary components; a motor and the mechanism it is attached to.
Someone please explain the shortcomings in my understanding.

Amps are a measure of work. As a motor is driven by impressed voltage it also creates counter electro-motive force. That is voltage in the opposite direction of the impressed voltage. Same concept as wind resistance and your car. So the more current able to be drawn the higher the load capability. Remember horse power and torque are related but different and torque is what gets the work done. Ever notice if you plug up the suction end of the vacumm it whines a high pitch? Well the amp draw went very low because the vains are spinning in a partial vacumm going extra fast and doing no work, the motor will burn up because no air flow is cooling it. Ever notice the cord gets warm? They are too cheap to use larger fatter copper wire and make the cord shorter to limit its resistance.

We're on Labrador retriever #2 and Dyson #1. The first Lab lived 14 years and chewed the chord on the Dyson. That's not why Lab #1 no longer with us! I replaced the plug and the Dyson still going strong (chocolate Lab, yellow Dyson).
We have a Kirby and a Panasonic vacuum in the basement and the Dyson is the best of the bunch. If our Dyson ever gives up the ghost, we'll buy another one.
If you need something to clean tile floors, get a Shark.

We have had a Dyson DC24 for about four years. It has performed very well cleaning up after two Dalmatians. If and when it ever goes belly up, I'll get another one.

I have two German shepherds and I have to run a vacuum every other day or more. I have 2 kirbys and gave one to my daughter and the other (cost $1100) sits in a closet. They are good cleaners but the bags cost a fortune and they are real heavy. I am currently using a shark navigator. I don't recommend it though. The dirt container is too small and has to be emptied every five minutes. Also the cord is too short. I may try a Dyson next.

It hasn't been all that many years, by my ancient standards, since the advertising motto for one company was "Electrolux sucks!"
I have a Hoover Windtunnel. Very heavy, but works. Has an attachment for getting pet fur off of furniture.

I've got an old Hoover Elite II. Seems like I've always had it. Our families give us new vacuum cleaners but nothing's come close to the performance of my ancient Hoover. I've had to rebuild the beater bar with new bearings, shims and bushings but I consider that normal wear and tear. It was made in the USA and I'd be hard pressed to replace it with something made in China.

We installed a central Vac. Unit 18 years ago and never looked back. Since we have a fairly large home and it's 3 levels (including the finished basement) my wife got tired or dragging a vac around the house. Now we have a 50 foot hose with a power head and a full accouterments set on each level and she never has to drag a vac around. The central vac unit has dual motors, is very powerful and does an exceptional job even in "Golden Retriever shedding season" which seems like it is every day. The nicest part is that since the main unit is in the utility closet downstairs, the noise level is pretty low.

Have had this for several years, had three dogs, all at once then none and now have Sarah-- its DYSON hands down-- have used many in the almost 50 years we have been married, This Dyson is the best, period. Cost be Damned. Or you can buy somewthing else every couple years. When Sarah was a pup she found part of the cord sticking out of the hall closet. She chewed it a bit, I put some duct tape on it and the Dyson never missed a lick.
