Default Shooting tips

I have a m&p 45c, fairly new to handguns and have only fired maybe 400 rounds. I have a nerve problem that makes my hands shake a bit (rights worse). Any tips on grip that would help? Was thinking about learning to shoot with my left hand since it doesn't shake as bad, but I'm right eye dominant so I don't think it would work out as good.

The dominant eye thing shouldn't be a problem with the pistol like it is for a shotgunner or a rifleman. If your left hand is steadier, why not give it a try? But if you are using a two-handed grip, it probably won't make that much difference, will it?

An M&P45c is not the easiest gun to learn to be able to do accurate shooting with, so don't expect too much from yourself. If you can consistently hit a paper plate at 25-yards, I would say you are doing OK. The gun is probably capable of doing considerably better than that, but it is a very tough gun to shoot well. I would not want to start out with one of those if I were new to the game.

I have familial tremors (inherited) which may or may not be similar to your problem. I've found that the proper grip and techniques pretty much take care of the pistol shooting for typical targets at typical ranges, like IDPA, USPSA, ICORE, etc. For long-range pistol shoooting at small targets, I take a rest, improvising in the field.

What I try to avoid is tightly squeezing the support fingers of my right hand, which causes amplified shaking. The two-handed, thumbs pointed forward, 70% of grip with support hand, grip of gun trapped between heels of both hands, pretty much takes care of it.
Most people new to handguns don't use the correct grip, and "milk" the gun with their fingers, causing all kinds of control problems.
Take a look at this Todd Jarrett video:

Good video btw, mostly what I do is right. on what they said. I do see a couple things, I can do diffrently that was on it though. Big thing to me how tight I'm gripping the pistol. I'll just need to be more conscious of the small adjustments I make when shooting. I'll have to try switching hands next time I'm at the range. Guess it should really make a difference with a double grip. We'll see

Thanks for the suggestions!

Also I did start out not pulling the trigger straight back but at an angle. Realized what I was doing after a few mags and made better groups. It'll just take plenty of practice, just wish 45acp ammo was more abundant.

Hawk,

Our fellow members have offered some good tips.
My best friend also has a genetic tremor problem (he's also the best source I know for brain surgeon/tremor jokes), and he has had very good results from using an "isometric" two-handed grip.
His strong/shooting hand pushes the gun away while his support hand pulls the gun back with equal force. He now shoots groups instead of "patterns".

I have the same problem. If you have just started shooting try changing the pressure of the hands. You will hear a lot about 60/40.
My right hand is worse than my left. So I put more pressure on my left hand and squeeze less on my right.
In a different post I talked about goint to a Trijicon Red Dot Sight and that is helping a lot because of the tremor and my eyesight.
Play with the difference in tightness of grip of the different hands.
Good Luck,
Ted
