I have a couple of original Vaqueros and a Lipsey's Birdshead (New) Vaquero in .45 ACP. The originals are in .45 Colt. I have been shooting the Birdshead .45ACP a whole lot in the last couple of weeks. It is quickly becoming my favorite. I have been practicing hip-shooting from 7 yards with it, and it points better than anything I can remember shooting.
Go ahead and order a Wolff base-pin spring, because chances are the base-pin will try to back out with the stock spring, even with moderate loads. I don't know why Ruger doesn't address this problem. You might want to do a "Poor Boy's Trigger Job." I did this with my Birdshead, and so far, it has worked very well.

I suggest a hand load of 8 to 9 grains Unique over a 250 grain lead Keith style, or round-nose flat-point bullet for your "desert Load." Lots of knockdown power without beating your hand to death. I love me some .45 Colt.
Birdshead (New) Vaquero in .45ACP and original Sheriff's Model in .45 Colt. Both with 3.75" barrel.
