I just upgraded to a larger safe deposit box, a 5"x10"x22" box.

Do any of you store handguns in your bank safe deposit box?

How is the best way to protect them from moisture and being scratched by other handguns? Space will be a premium. I am thinking of maybe 6 to 10 guns to be stored.

Charlie, I've got a few collectables that are stashed away in a couple of safe deposit boxes. I oil them up once a year and every six months or so I change out the desiccant bag that I store in the safe deposit boxes. I got the big desiccant bags from my local Harley Davidson dealer. The HD factory use to (May still) pack the bags with new bikes and the dealer usually just threw them out with the crates the bikes came in.

As far as scratches go, think Crown Royal bags.

i use to store my valuable items in a bank safe deposit box. but, the rent kept going up and i found i could buy a large waterproof, fire proof safe for the cost of one years rental fee.

so now i have everything (fiearms included) in the safe and i dont have to go to the bank when i want to retrieve anything.

How about Bore Stores?

I use silicone impregnated gun socks. Sack-ups is one brand. You can get a 5 pack pistol size for $24.99 at Midway. They will protect your guns from getting scratched also.

I heard that guns stored in these socks survived Katrina.

Sorry, we get these silly questions from time to time. For background, I've got a tiny collection of prewar K22s. They have a few bigger friends, like a prewar M&P target with HBH (to match some of the K22s.) They all look showroom new. I'm going to guess some of the guns from the factory back in the day didn't look that perfect. I sold off the guns that weren't up to my standards. The newest of them was built in 1940, thats 72 years ago. And back in the prewar years the best oil you could get was milsurp stuff labeled poison.

The relevance of the above part is those guns, living under different roofs and probably not protected by lubricants nearly as good as todays magic chemicals, survived beautifully. Worse, they were probably in closets or desk drawers, often in homes that weren't dehumidified by air conditioning. Lets just call it lousy storage conditions with inferior protectants.

So fast forward to today. We've got some wonder medicines for guns. My personal favorite now, and subject to change, is CLP Collectors. What I discovered is the stuff covers and kind of dries to a hard waxy substance. And if you use a genuine Zip Lock brand baggie, no air can even get past the bag to attempt to attack the protectant or the gun finish. Just stored that way, in its original 70+ year old box, should make it good for another 70. But I won't make it nearly that long. So my goal is much more conservative, hoping to keep them presentable for maybe the 15 or 20 I might have left.

Every bank I've ever been in was climate controlled. Even if that failed, no moisture or condensation is going to penetrate the baggie. I have faith!

So the other problem is banks have electronic locks. Good luck getting into your box if the N Koreans set off a high atmosphere nuke over Kansas. But I have faith the nasty old Registered magnums will still fire, zapped by EMP or not.

Funny, my gun safe seems to start overflowing every few years. I can never seem to catch the baby guns before they blossom into pre-war S&W revolvers.

I store the manual key to my gun safe in my bank deposit box. I have young boys and I'd rather risk not hsveing access to my guns if the key lock malfunctions than risk them finding the keys hiding spot.

I prefer a home safe because it's handier. You can get to your guns whenever you want.

I have a rather large gun safe (Liberty Fat Boy) which allows me to keep my guns at home where I shoot. I keep all my guns and some other sensitive items in that.

Although I do have a safe deposit box because it would be easier for my kids to get into if something happens to me.

In my SDB, on top, is the combination to my gun safe.

Not sure I'd want to go to the bank every time I got the urge to shoot my pistols.
