Today produced a pair of ponys!!
Don't know how things are for you guys but around my neck of the woods S&W's (especially older ones are getting scarce). Found this pair of Colt Official Police at one of the regular stops when I'm running my traps. 4 Inch is a "prewar" 1943 while 5 inch is a 1950 vintage. Both just a little younger than this writer. They cleaned up pretty good and I got them right. Bores are great, lockup tight. Show worn grips and traditional hight points and end of muzzle wear from carry. I have heard the 4 inch is rather uncommon. Any input greatly appreciated.

Those beauties are in the exact condition I prefer.
Well used but not abused.
Good score!

I'm not a Colt pre-War expert, but I have a half dozen of various ones...the OP (and the Army Special before them) were most commonly 5 inch barrels I believe, but I don't know that the 4 incher would increase the value that much...
NICE score nonetheless!! congrats!
I have the Police Positive in both 4 and 5 inch, and a 5 inch Army Special in 32-20...all three from the 1920's...

come to think of it, I know I've seen at least one at Collector's FA in Houston from 1942 or 1943 with the 4 inch barrel, and, don't forget about the parkerized Colt Commandos of the same frame size...I believe most if not all of those were 4 inch barrels and they were being produced at the same time (likely from the same run of barrels, just a different barrel roll)...

4in. most common, then 5in,then 6in. remember these were holster guns back then and shorter was easier to carry. although, lots of the early highway patrol used 6in guns for better ammo performance and longer sight radius.
