I had a lot of young guys in Iraq (19-24 yr olds) who wanted to "kill them all" -- (meaning bad guys of course) -- have to love young men with fire in the belly and a desire to change the world. Having been tasked with mentoring them (and wanting to never write a letter to their parents telling them why their son was not coming home), my challenge was how to motivate them yet have them exercise appropriate caution
in a combat zone. One day, it came to me in a flash. Bear in mind that we have trained all thru the 80's and 90's to fight the Russian Bear, to stop the Russian Army tanks and APV's as they stormed thru the Fulda Gap in Germany (in our exercises at the NTC -National Training Center at Ft Irwin, we fought the "Krasnovian Army" -- actually the 11th Cav masquerading as the Russian Army.) I gathered my guys and told them:

"Our mission is to destroy AQI - Al Qaeda in Iraq -- it would be easier if we were fighting professionals -- professionals are predictible. Gentlemen, never forget that we are fighting rank amateurs -- and given that, I don't know what the "freak" they will decide to do next. So, don't underestimate them -- stay focused."
