Need help identifying 38 Special
An elder relative was recently placed in nursing home. As his effects with gathered and organized, a S&W 38 was discovered and I was asked to investigate. If it has value, it will be sold to cover medical expenses. If it has no value, it will be turned in to the local sheriff. Your assistance is appreciated.
Description:
38 S&W Special CTG
fixed sites (front site a 1 inch ramp)
six round cylinder with no markings
barrel measures 3.25 inches from gun body
barrel is constant size, no taper
number etched on right side of grip frame 781 028
number engraved on butt of grip frame BNZ6327
no other numbers visible
Thank you

It's a very common heavy barrel Military&Police Model 10 from 1993 and probably has a value of between $300-350. If you open the cylinder and look at the frame at the yoke it will be marked Mod 10 dash something.
BTW, that's a 4" barrel not a 3.25. Hope that helps.

diamonback68,
thanks for your reply.
When I looked at the yoke, it read MOD 64-5 below the ser #. Is this consistent with your earlier comment? Thanks

Absolutely, the 64 is merely the stainless steel version of the blue M&P Model 10. You didn't state that it was stainless. That would should easily be worth $350 or a little more.

FYI, the reason I said it was a 4" gun is because you measure from the face of the cylinder to the end of the muzzle.

These sell for $300 to $400 depending on condition AT A GUN STORE.
When you're trying to sell it TO a gun store they're worth about 1/2 that.
You (they?) would get more for it by selling it here in the classified section.....

Selling on forum FTF (face-to-face) to a person in SAME STATE would get most money.
The saving on shipping and FFL fees save both the seller and the buyer some money.

What kind of grips does it have? The common rubber grips are the least valuable. Some of the fancier wood grips can increase the value substantially.
For the best information, post some good quality, close up pictures.

One other thing, it depends upon the state in which you reside whether you can sell it to any other individual or not.
Certain states (a few) do have some restrictions on selling it to an individual. Since you didn't state what state you are residing, that makes a difference. If you tell us, we can help point you in a direction to find that revolver a good new loving home and a reasonable amount of money for what it is.

Thanks to all for your replies. The information was very helpful. The family wants the money ASAP, so I will go to a dealer to expedite the sale.
Thanks

It can get worse, some states have laws about handling and transporting firearms with out a licence. In cases like this the ffl would have to come to the past owners residence, check to be sure the gun was licensed. Then the ffl could take possession of the gun. If you take grannys old relic to the ffl, you could be in trouble. If it isnt on a permit, the ffl cannot take it in.
In places like this the only choice is to call the local police and turn it in.
You must know the laws of the state you are in.
Jus sayin...
I know it all ok in free states...
My state doesn't have laws like I wrote above but they do exist in other states.
Best wishes to the OP and family
