I had a Safariland catalog in 1977 and the photos and prices seem to back up your timeframe. I remember the catalog also was offering Kevlar vests and the new (at the time) buckle-less duty belts which utilized velcro. The showed an officer in an LAPD style uniform wearing the buckle-less system with a side by side photo of conventional duty gear.

At the 1976 NRA Convention in Cincinnati I met Austin Behlert. I had a NIB Colt 1911 Series 70 that I gave to him to throat, ramp and enlarge the ejection port. He did his work then sent the 1911 to Ron Mahovski (sp) of Metalife where it was hard chromed.
That 1911 would feed empty cases.
Like a fool, I traded that gun to a buddy sometime in the 80's when stainless 1911's were available. He still has it and I have hopes of getting it back.

I have a 1973 Gun Digest that list Smith and Wessons in the "HANDGUNS OVER 90 DOLLARS" section.
Not one was over $200.

His chopped Hi-Power looks just like the "Pathfinder" Bill Laughridge was building a few years ago! Thanks! Dale

I stopped at his shop way back in the early 80s (my niece went to school not far from his shop) and got a cool t-shirt that read "Behlert Customs guns." It was one of my favorites for a long time...

I first visted his shop when it was in Kenilworth in the early 1970s.
For a few years it was not far from where I live in Central Jersey so I became a regular. Never did get a custom gun but my trusty M-57 was the beneficiary of Austin's skills, and I had a few small projects done.
