Iggy might get new neighbors...
I saw where the city of Buford WY (population 1) was auctioned off to some feller from Vietnam for a bit under a million dollars.
Well, maybe they'll add a new place to eat around there for ya.
Do the tracks still go through there? They said that the railroad was "rerouted," so maybe the feller wants to have his only personal railroad museum? However, the laws on railroad steam engines in the US are the most draconian in the world.

I think them fellers that bought Buford are in for a real education.. I can't think of a colder more desolate spot in Wyoming. The transition from SE Asia to SE Wyoming is gonna be a big'n.
The Railroad goes on one side of them and the Interstate on the other and the wind goes straight through.
What you see is the whole shebang. See that little spot under the symbol of a gas pump? That's Buford.
I wish them the best, but I'll bet it's back up for sale before long.

I would like to buy a city like that just for the oficial letterhead and address. If you are a city, you can put in for grants, order weapons for your PD and all kinds of other wild stuff.
"Yes, I would like to purchase 10 m16s and 2 m14s for the Oldiron PD please."

Those prices are the parking charges to park at the pumps, the gas is extra...

I don't know quite what the laws are, but there use to be a bunch of them around. Bairoil, Recluse, Dull Center, Opal, Beer Mug.
There are a few struggling along to survive between oil, uranium, coal and a few other boomlets, but I sure ain't inclined to buy one.
Sprefix,
That's got to be an old picture. I ain't never seen the price of gas less than a dollar higher than anywhere else. If you run out of gas there, price ain't no object.

Recluse is still there. Savageton closed up in the mid 80's then reopened a few years ago during the last gas boom. Weston was torn down about 25 years ago. funny thing is it is still on the map. Spotted Horse is still a thriving town. The population doubled a couple of years ago. The old guy got married. now the population is 2.
Thats just the ones in my area.
I love living in Wyoming. The least populated state in the union.

Then, of course, we have those booming metropolises out west of Casper - Powder River, Hiland, Moneta, Lost Cabin and Lysite. Leaving out Powder River, which is huge at about 100, the total population of the rest of those places might make 50.
Wind up at Buford today was around 90 mph - heck is was close to 70 in Laramie! Mix that kind of wind in with zero degree temps and a few feet of snow and you've got a tough place to live. We call that place Buford. Like Iggy, I surely wish those folks luck and the best, but it's gonna be tough.

Rozet gets my vote as the best small town in Wyoming.
They have an elementary school a post office and two bars. One of which is a topless bar. Population 24.

On most highway maps of Wyoming, on 450 between Newcaslte and Wright, you'll find the town of Clairton. There isn't nothing there, NOTHING, except a few falling down buildings. Pop Nadaa, nothing.
I almost bought that half section it sets on about 15 years ago, but sobered up.

When I was going to college in Laramie in the early 80s we would stop at Medicine Bow for beer on the trip down from Sheridan.
Also I recall a little town called Bosler near Medicine Bow...Bosler also sold beer, but much to the surprise and delight of us college boys, they also had a VERY well worn dancing "lady" (75% condition tops)! I believe we may have stayed and drank our beer in Bosler rather than taking it to go!

What negativity. Them Asians will have a thriving town with good food, sights to see and livestock as far as the eye can see. In 2 years there will be hundreds living there with no crime, good schools and revenues generated. Joe

PS: I moved here from South Dakota(over 30 years ago) To danged many people in SoDak.!

First time I was in Wyoming in 1947 there was a log chain nailed to the top of a phone pole next to gas station. I asked the guy what it was. he said with a straight face it was a wind gauge. Muttered something about the wind wasn't blowing at the time but wait a minute & the chain would come alive.

Highway Dept crew in Wheatland got tired of replacing wind socks in a particularly windy area on I-25, they put this one up. The Governor from Wheatland also, din't have no sense of humor. It didn't stay up long.

Shirley Basin? (What is the guys name whose ranch house is/was up there near Bates Hole? Nice guy. Let Dad and I stay in his bunk house one night while we were hunting the Basin in 1983.)
I've killed antelope there, and and my first elk kill was in the Shirley's.

That was in Carbon County. Been a long time ago, now.
Neighbors being a "fur piece away" seems to make for friendlier folks.
Nearly everybody I met away from cities in Wyoming were what we'd call down here "good people". Most of the city folks wre nice, but just in a different way.
Reminded me a lot of here back in the '50s.

I seriously thought about bidding on it. I know what I was getting into but to me the interesting aspect as a train fan would be watching the UP cross Sherman Hill. Yes cold, yes windy but heck my own chunk of the world.
The biggest show stopper was that it was the UPRR and I am a AT&SF fan. Had it been down in say Mountainair NM, I would have gotten agressive aggressive

Well shucks, It woulda been fun to be your neighbor. I don't make the pilgrimage to the ranch as often as I use to, but I could sure have found a reason to drive that far.

I am from Texas, I have always resided here.
However, I have hunted in Wyoming a bunch, and I have driven through Wyoming, many, many times.
I have been on most of the roads in Wyoming. I have even been to Buford.
Here are some "random" thoughts.
First the people I have met there are first rate.
I have several good friends there, that I talk to on a regular basis.
The Wind:
I have seen the electronic signs state, on HiWay 80 just out of Casper and Laramie state, "All unloaded semitrailers turn around and go back to Cheyenne, due to high winds...

More Random thoughts:::
In the mid 1970's, I worked in a BAD part of town. Drugs, whores, criminal blacks, Illegal Aliens, American Indians, causing, killings, shooting, stabbings, were a daily occurance...
THEN, it became a cosomopolitian of, South East Asia: The Republics of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos were well repsented...
Within a few months the "New Republic" had run most all of the "criminals" out.
Things did quiet down a bunch.
I did have one big problem when I got a BIG distrubance call to a large apartment complex.
Seems as though there was a South East Asia, Hatfield and McCoy fued.
I got a young girl to translate for me. She spoke all the differet dialects.
Famlies from Vietnam, Republic of, Cambodia, and Laos were all involved in the fued. Blows had been struck...
As I tried to calm things down, through my young interepetor, she stated to me in English, "Officer, [as she pointed to the different people involved] these people are from Vietnam, these are from Cambodia, and these are form Laos, they have all been fighting for over a thousand years...
I told her to translate the following: Tell them I respect the countries they are from, but now they are all AMERICANS, and in AMERICA, no matter where we are originally from, once here, we all get along, and we ALL work together, to make a better life for ourselves and our families. Tell them they are now all Americans, just like me...
After she spoke, there was a long silence... Then they all started nodding, and we all shook hands, it was all smiles...
I NEVER recieved a disturbance call at that Apt complex again.
Many times after that I would stop by there to visit.
I was always greeted with smiles and a bowl of "some kind of food".
They were pretty much model Citizens...

Don't know anything about any desert elk. It's just a hop, skip, and a jump across the interstate to the National Forest.
Got a bunch that wintered in the sage brush on the ranch at Medicine Bow that sure raised ol Ned with the fences.

While I admit the winters can be bad in Wyoming, I would just think back to my time in Siberia and thank god for the sun coming up. Working in the arctic when there is no sun for months on end would convince me that this is the would be nice.
Like this year, up to 78 degrees north for more work. Cold can be dealt with a lot easier than hot in my opinion.
The town appealed to my natural desire to be left alone. Essentially after living (surviving) in a city of 6 million, and putting up with traffic and all of the crime and other problems I just want to retire and be left alone.
Oh well, back to searching around NM/AZ for a hiddy hole.

Peter, having I-80 on one side and the UPRR on the other may not be what you have in mind as a retirement haven.
I see the two purchasers intend to use this as an outlet for Vietnamese products.
I suspect that won't work very well. The only travelers that stop there are in desperate need of obtaining enough gas to get to to Cheyenne or Laramie. The high price of gas sold there precludes anyone filling their tank. Maybe a candy bar or some cheetos and let's get out of here.
It's not even a good stop and rob place.
A Vietnamese outlet mall at that location is a little bit difficult to imagine.

"If you build it they will come".
For some reason that came to mind.
