No, you're not. "Clayton DeLaney" is a classic by any measure, as are a great many of his other songs.

I'm surprised like you that this was the first mention of "The Songwriter"...

I think there was one about a woman leaving the singer (?)
Or maybe it was a man leaving the singer (?)
So - Someone left someone and someone else was sad (or maybe he or she just got drunk). I don't listen to much Country Music.

But, I liked the one about the truck.
No -- Not that one - The other one.......

You guys have named some great ones. I just love Patsy Cline and listen to "She's Got You" over and over again. And, oh my, Willie Nelson singing "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" . . . well what can be said. However, I must put forth my favorite country song of all time. It's my favorite mainly because when I hear it I think of my dearly departed mother pretending to be shocked and then letting out a laugh. She passed in 1977, a couple of years after this song came out. Oh that crazy Zoot Fenster:

If you like Vince Gill, hit You Tube for his song "One More Last Chance." It's set at a golf club/course. He has had his drivers license suspended and drove his John Deere to the course. At the end of the video he's leaving as George Jones is driving in on his John Deere mower with his clubs in back. He yells "Hey Sweet Pea" to Gill as they pass each other. They're "Just good ol' boys makin noise, ain't nothin' they can do."

While I love the "old" country music. It's hard to hear any of it on Atlanta area radio. A lot of the "new" country music just sounds the same.

Some of my Favorites.
Toby Keith - Trailorhood
Most anything Colt Ford
Any Zac Brown Band
and Colt Fords "Dirt Road Anthem" not Jason Aldeans

A new country song I'm listening to now is "Neon" by Chris Young it has that old feel.

Chris Young - Neon - YouTube

Google " The Notorious Cherry Bombs" & find the song
"It's Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chewed....."
Nobody mentioned Steve Earle- really ?
Billy & Bonnie is a classic.
And finally Spanish Johnny with Emmy Lou Harris
& Waylon Jennings.
You won't regret listening to any if 'em.
Regards,
turnerriver

I'm a romantic soul so:

1. Any song with "Pabst Blue Ribbon" in it.
2. "I knew the bride when she used to rock n roll"
3. "Thank God and Greyhound shes Gone"

Just checked my I-Tunes 25 most played folder. Currently the top five are these:

Past the Point of Rescue (Hal Ketchum)
Right Hand Man (Eddy Raven)
Your Love Is a Miracle (Mark Chestnutt)
Torn In Two (Ray Wylie Hubbard)
Tom Ames' Prayer (Steve Earle)

Think what you like.

Would this be after she cooked you up some bacon and some beans, or after she stirred the fire and went out and lifted up the car to change the tire? You didn't take her sister drivin 'every night did you?

Anything by Hank Sr.

Nothing by Hank Jr.

Surprised no one has mentioned Dolly Parton

You play any country song backwards and you get:
Your house back
Your job back
Your wife, girlfriend or cousin back
Your dog back
Your pickup truck starts
Your beer is full

In a Christian country song you get the same result on the list when you play it forward.

Sorry boys, one must look toward the future of "Country Music".

I do like the oldies, but hey, top Taylor in appeal at this moment.

I have a lot of favorites---singers/writers.
I would say that the writer of choice is Billy Joe Shaver.
Song of choice by him is "Ride Me Down Slowly"---but that is too easy and it is far more complex than puttin down a name----It is an attitude and a lifestyle that is completely American.
I think country music is much more than honky tonks, broken hearts and doing me wrong--or driving trucks.
It is every day man and woman stripped of all the make-up and words, It is an attempt--as poor as it may be completed--to chronicle everyday man and the failures rather than the sucesses, that draws us to this genre.
Other music whitewashes folks and adds an aura of rose colored glasses to the reality of the everyday man.
You folks do it your way----there are lessons to be learned in country music-----+-----dancin to it in some of the places I grew up is a REAL experience in the lives of everyday men and women.
Blessings
