Default AR-10 (308) Mil-Dot Scope alternatives/suggestions

Picked up an AR-10 in 308 Win and trying to figure out a good scope. Sort of leaning toward a Millett 4 X 16 30MM with side focus and mil dot, and a Nikon 4 X 16 42 side focus BCD. Want a good reliable mid range price scope and will appreciate comments/suggestions pro/con and other alternatives.

I've had very good results with a Leupold Mark 4 LR 4.5x14 with the mil-dot reticle. I have one on a 50 BMG rifle and it's taken quite a pounding with no problems whatever. I have another on an M40A1 in .308 with equally good results. It's been my experience that there usually isn't much use for power more than 14. Mirage tends to make much more power than that pretty much useless at longer ranges.

I have a DPMS .308 I put a Burris on. It has a graduated reticle for out to 500 yards. Granted, it's not as exacting as a mildot scope but I don't need a range card and there are no calclulations involved. It shoots to point of aim, and I'm not going to take a shot at anything beyond 500 yards with the .308 (my range limit, not the cartridges).

I've been very happy with my Weaver 4-20 x 50 800360 MIL DOT side focus. It's a front focal plane scope so the mil dots "grow" with the magnification.

Tom,
Lots of good advise here- Question- what type of shooting will you do? What range and how much math do you want to think about?

Appreciate advise/alternatives - looks like no votes for my two thoughts, but that is why I ask. As for purpose/use - playing around and learning to shoot up to 400 yards and possibly further. I have a number of "crow/pig" rifles from .17 hmr, .17Rem, .17 Mach IV, 218 Bee, .222, 223, and 6MM Rem etc. See the 308 as a great rifle to really "Learn" how to use a combat piece. At my age - it is a "do it now" or forget it. Guess you might say it is probably the last serious project.

Depending on how much you want to spend, the Redfield Accuplex can be had for under $200.00- It is now made by Leupold and has the same lifetime warranty. I was testing Leupold scopes last week- I put a 16" Larue OBR 308 out to 1010yrds w/ a 2.5x8 Leupold M4 w/a TMR reticle. Unless you need the magnification for spotting- I normally do not use more than 10x to take the shot. Which ever you decide, make sure it's got lots of eye-relief built into it, not real long or heavy. I use Leupold M4 LR/T's, Nightforce NSX's and Premier Reticle scopes for most of my distance stuff- not cheap..

hope this helps

Appreciate everyone's input. Looks like you guys know great scopes. A little (lot) above my price target. Picked up a used Millett 4-16 50MM with 30MM tube Mil-dot used at a very good price. It will be my learning platform and if all goes really well, will consider moving up to your neighborhood. Again, thanks for your time and advise.
