The "Holly" Houl.

I used to have a 1971 Crysler New Yorker. Can't begin to tell how many motor mounts I had to replace on that sucker. That engine jumped when you punched it :D Maroon two door with black vinyl top. Had a back seat bigger than most twin beds ;) Spent many a night back there.

Once upon a time, I had a 1957 Ford Fairlane with the ThunderBird 312 engine.

It was not a V8, It was a Y8.

It had a big Holley Carb.

It would pass anything BUT a gas station.

Many times I would take the aircleaner off, and put on a large "funnel".

When you tromped on the gas, it would suck the hood down a couple of inches and deafen any body with in 50 yards...

Camero had that same problem with the Z 28's, broken motor mounts.

Apparently they solved it with a chain. My buddy had A Z 28 and their was a chain attched from the motor, to the frame, to keep the motor from torqueing bad enough to break the motor mounts.

we used to weld a peice of plate steel in the motor mounts to keep them together....

Ihave rebuilt many a Quadra-junk...many Motorcraft by Holly carbs and then replaced them with Carter/Edlebrock carbs. Kids now days don't even know what a carb is, let alone know how to rebuild it or jet it! I can do that and tune fuel injection too! I am a transitional dinosaur!!

I had a new yorker 440, think it was a 72. The motor mounts broke as I turned off the freeway on a off ramp. The car wanted to pick up speed as I was standing on the break! It was a exciteing few secounds. Couldnt down shift either. Cant say how I got stopped for sure, guess I turned the key off. Here is a 76 trans am I had.

Before the double pumpers came out, they made the 950 and 1050CFM 3 barrels. Instead of 2 rear barrels, you had one big long one. I don't think it worked all that good, but man did it look mean.

Those who complain about Quadrajets are those who didn't know what to do with them. If you knew the tuning points and how to dial one in it was one of the most flexible carbs you could put on an engine. Back in the mid 70's to early 80's lean sags off the line were common and the fix was incredibly simple, you just raised the primary metering rods a touch by turning the APT screw.

What I loved and still love about the Q Jet is what happens when the air door on those giant secondaries open up, because NOTHING moaned like a Q Jet at WOT.

I just recently disposed of my '57 two door sedan. Ran a 425hp 302 I picked up as a parts engine from a wrecked Camaro. Besides some head work the top end was a 750 spread bore Holley with mechanical secondary's and an Edelbrock low profile manifold. 3.73 rear and a Muncie four speed. The car actually got decent gas mileage if you didn't hit those secondaries. But what the heck is the fun in that. When I raced it I took the air cleaner off and I'll tell you that when those secondaries kicked in it was the most amazing sound I have ever heard. Plus the car acted like it got kicked in the rear by Godzilla. The car always ran honest low elevens and I only lunched the tranny once. I do miss the car but got offered way to much money not to sell it.

Today I filled up my silverado. $85.19. I paid less than that for my first three or four cars!

It was pretty amazing how much power could be worked out of one of those Chev 302's. They could run pretty high revs, too! I had a 350 horse 350 in my '69 Vette, and if I kept my foot out of it I'd get 20ish mpg. Did a complete rebuild, 2.02 heads with a 5 stone grind, 750 Holley and an Edelbrock manifold. Can't remember the cam I put in it, but it was fairly lopey.....got so I could pull and replace the tranny on it in about 15 minutes (I had "issues" with the throw-out bearing). That was the one I had when my honey and I met. Got married and sold it so I could get a van and haul the family. Shoulda kept the Vette and left the kids at home.......

It takes me 15 minuets to just get down on the garage floor now! Much longer to get up! I dont know what gear ratio I had in my 76 trans am, but I swear the faster I drove the better mileage I got!
What I didnt like about it was haveing to sit down on the curb to get in and out of it. Also it would shake your fillings out at lower speeds and level out at higher speeds.

Carter AFB/63 Bonneville Wagon

After my first marriage ended, money was nonexistent. My buddy Breen finds me a 63 Bonneville Wagon, 389, Carter AFB, white/maroon interior, from a rancher in Wallowa, Ore. I paid $450 and drove it home. Boy I was proud of my wagon. I tried to be a bad boy, car was just too heavy. However, 135 mph was done on a stretch of Central Oregon highway, and this was before I had the front end rebuilt. Kinda goosey. I found a set of eight lugs, front seat reupholstered in NOS fabric, new radials, car was a monster.

In the early sixties, you could order from Pontiac a Catalina wagon with factory four speed, 421 w/ dual quads. Old family men would go to the drags on Saturday night, put larger ports?? in the carbs, and drag the family wagon.

In 1961, I believe you could also order from the factory a Catalina 2 door with aluminum front clip, super duty motor, and just about have a Nascar contender. Crazy
