Made In China
The *Pet Peeves* threads and Taurus handgun stuff got me a bit cranked up, so I decided to think of something *happy*
I was on a job in China years ago and they were trying to position something with a Made In China crowbar. It bent.
The tool guy went and got another one - It broke.
I went into my office and got a fairly large Craftsman screwdriver out of my box and handed it to the mechanic. It worked.
The lead mechanic held it up and said "Whaaa" (or something very similar).
I smiled and said, "Made in USA"
He said, "Ah."
A few days later I was trying to move something kinda heavy and was struggling a bit when he came up and just grabbed whatever it was and moved it. I thanked him.
He smiled, raised his arm, flexed his bicep, and said, "Made In China"

And I remember when everyone used to gripe about everything made in Japan. Of course that was before the Interweb.

I don't believe it is at much where it was made, but WHO made it, and which day of the week it was made on.

Well the stuff must be good to ship half way around the world to get here. Does this country make anything any more? Lets see. Tariff, cost of shipping. They must work for 10 cents a hour!

That's about right. In 1999 I was installing some casing inspection equipment in Chongquing (used to be called Chungking), China. One of the petroleum engineers that I was working with told me he made the about $100 American a month. His wife was an engineer on the Three Rivers Dam and was making about $60 U.S. a month. He felt that he was very fortunate.

There is rising affluence in China, especially in the last ten years or so. A frequent sight in Tokyo those days is Chinese tourists on shopping sprees. See a fair amount of Chinese tourists in Hawaii as well nowadays.
Came back to add: I just read in the newspaper that Chinese tourists to the US spend an average of $6,000 per visit whereas the average for tourists from other countries is $4,000.

Yeah, me too Andy.
That dude was a real card, by the way.
I worked with a lot of really nice folks over there - I felt sorry for them and their living conditions. Most were pretty up beat none the less....
It was right at, if not, slave labor back then. Hopefully things have changed for the *common worker*.
