What happened yesterday?
Here is an odd one for you. My neighbor Mark and I were burning ribs and having a visit by the cooker yesterday when he tried to call his wife before she left for work. He picked up his cell phone (ATT carrier) and it went dead in his hand. Turned itself completely off. He said "Man, my battery just went dead."
My phone was laying by the baste on the table and I picked it up, opened it and went to hand it to him when it turned itself off .(Verizon carrier)
Meanwhile Mark booted his back up. I turned mine back on and watched it settle in just to be sure it was back on. It was, then it shut it self completely off for the second time.
The next time I turned it back on everything went back to normal.
I read this morning sun flares were forecast with EMP. Could that do this or would it wreck the phones altogether?
We were not near any transformers or other electical items.
Could it be coincidence that both phones from two providers acted up at the same time?
It's no big deal but I do wonder about it. It was like we were in the Bermuda Triangle for cel phones.
Any ideas besides Canadian whiskey?
Thanks
Mike

That's a really good excuse why you neighbor didn't call his wife. Now he's got it in writing too!

I dont wear a tin foil hat BUT I heard of this before. I used to work top security many years ago and was sent somewhere. Another security type in the area told me a goverment backed program was testing something somewhere and even radios wouldnt play or flashlights light nor would cars start and if running would stop!
I never witnessed it myself and never knew whether to belive his story. He seemed sincere and beliveable. This was in as remote of a area that exists in the country. This was over 30 + years ago!

Well Earthquake activity can cause Magnetic Waves,
there is even a school of thought that they can be used as predictors
You are pretty close to the New Madrid Fault
so it could be Seismic rather than Govt. / Human

The O administration said they were declaring war on the use of cell phones and the internet against citizens in such places as Syria.
Is there something we should know about you that you ain't tellin' us?

Hey! It's been happening to me and the wife too! I use an iPhone thru ATT and have for 2+ years. I've never had a dropped call or a problem. Until 2 weeks ago. Now, can't hardly complete a call and it comes up saying "no sim card installed". Have to shut it down and restart it sometimes twice before it works again. I've even tried it with my tinfoil hat on! What's up?

Was Air Force One around Missouri that day? If not, then it was the aliens.

I think Handejector nailed it, I have found after copious quantities of ripple I could not use a phone either.

One reason why I insist on a land line. And it's worked even when the rest of the power went off.
Also, no battery to die.
I have a new cell phone that I'm trying to get working, so as to have one with me. But no way will I rely on a cell phone alone.

For my money I'm saying it was the work of George Bush! If he can cause Katrina he can surely turn off a cell phone. (with the aid of the canadian whiskey of course!)

Howdy
Howdy,
Mark just dropped by. He mentioned that his phone had shut down earlier this morning again. Mine has been sitting here next to me hooked to a charger and everything has been normal.
I just think it is odd that something can turn off a persons phone.
Can two people count as a case of mass hypnosis?
Anyway, thanks for the replies, I enjoyed them all.

Ummm, I have a little confesson to make -- that thorium reactor kit I was assembling yesterday to power that galactic transmission beam I have been working on on weekends (I work on it on the weekends that I am not working on my "Learn neurosurgery at home" course) had a little hiccup -- sort of towards the north (Arkansas/Missouri direction) -
-- don't know if it had any effect on your phone but none of the satellite recievers around here work anymore and I have sort of a greenish glow to my skin -- darn fireflys keep trying to land on me and mate.

When was the last time you did a tower database update? Supposed to do it monthly if on Verizon (*228 ).
It could be the newer phones are doing it on a signal from the tower. With all the changeover from 3 to 4G, the phones have to do something to keep up.

Funny, people tell me they call me and I never answer, probably because it never is on unless I need to make a call.

update
Everything is like it should be.
I still think it is odd two phones from different carriers turned off with in seconds of each other.
Temps were cool and Mark's phone was in a padded case on his belt. Mine was on the table just inside the garage.
Mark is kind to his stuff and takes good care of his phone, where I deep fried this phone for fun and recreation at the last fish fry. I'm lucky it didn't blow a battery and sprinkle everyone with hot lard. It is a submersible milspec phone that is tough as woodpecker lips, but I think I am about to get the best of it.
They ought to pay me to test things. If there is a weak spot I'll find it.
When it goes I'll get another one like it. A regular cel phone doesn't stand a chance.
Thanks again for the input.
Mike

The smoke emitted from the cooker may have created something similar to Spordic E. The electromagnetic waves emitted by your cell phones, while turned on but not in use, may have been propagated by the rib smoke sporadic E layer in a way that bounced back to your cell phones creating harmonics which triggered a circuit shutdown. It happens...

When it was smokin' in the deep fryer it kept on, stayed on and still works.
It left stains in my pocket for about a week.
Everything is better when fried in lard does not apply to cel phones.
I figured it out Phil, different kind of smoke.
Thanks

HMMMM?
Howdy,
Well, it looks like coincidence.
It has been fun and I'd like to think ripple infested, smoke damaged, tin foil hat wearing big foots had some thing to do with it.
I really enjoyed the riot gun barbecue thread too.
I have it from a good electronic authority that it was just a fluke, and anything that would have shut the two phones off would have killed them altogether.
That comes right from the man at the Radio Shack counter.
What more electronic authority is there than that. Around here it is Edison,Tesla and Radio shack counter person when you are talking electrical geniuses.
If the old phone starts flashing messages out in Morse code you all will be the first to know.
Meanwhile THANKS!
Mike

Did I observe the possible consumption of adult beverages in that photo?
