60 years old. 5' 10", 245. 80% of fat on my body is my spare tire. 31-10.50!

Both knees are relatively new, but don'w weight bear well and I fall several times a day because of it, right ankle is fused. Acute bursitis in both hips, bilateral shoulder impingement syndrome, severe low back pain..possible fusion in near future.

Exercise other than daily living activities is a strain, but I'll do anything my body will allow.

Dieting for me is harder than quiting smoking. I was smoking 2 packs a day for 20 years and quit cold turkey back in 92. Wife is a terrific cook and I snack a lot at night from pain and frustration. I weighed 180 when I retired from the Army in 95. Not making excuses for my life style, just tryignto put it out there.

Any one in "my shoes" that can offer up a suggestion, please do so.

Thanks in advance,
Senior Citizen

Look into excercise programs for "seniors". There should be some that are swimming pool based that will reduce the impact to your joints.
You may not be "old" yet, but your body sounds like it is. There should be some stuff in PC, if not nearer to you.
Maybe talk to your Doctor about reccomended exercises.

Diets? There should be an 1800 calorie diet plan at your Doc's also. Follow it. It takes some work, but you will find that there is plenty of food in 1800 calories. A little exercise and if will come off.

Walking is great excercise, and you don't have to leave your home area to do it.

Cut out soft drinks and sweet tea (that was hard for me). Everything else in moderation, no processed snacks - eat a piece of fruit instead.

Good luck, it's a tough road, but you can do it.

I am 70 and I quit smoking cold turkey in 1986. I am 5-11 and have gone from 180 to 200 lbs. but if I didn't watch what I eat I would weigh several hundred pounds. That 20 pounds was put on pretty quick after I quit smoking and I can't get rid of it but I have stayed at 200 ever since. I am too beat up to do much exercising but I tell myself that anybody tough enough to quit smoking cold turkey is tough enough to not eat everything they see and it seems to work for me. Get tough and good luck. Larry

Remove the evil "white Carbs from you diet" Bread and Pasta was my downfall. No way I can eat whole wheat pasta. I actually like brown rice better than white now .

No white potatoes, sugar, flour, rice, bread, pasta. Substitue whole grain, brown rice, sweet potatoes. Of course none of the snake foods chips, soda etc. You can still eat and not feel hungry. You will lose weight in weeks and then maybe some mild exercise, walking whatever.

Kind of a semi South Beach Diet. The Atkins was a bit extreme.

Bathtub exercise works for me. This time last year 42 waist pants were tight. I went to a dermatologist for skin damage and she put me on a 2 week, twice a day treatment of Flouroracil 5%. I had no idea how nasty that stuff was. It was like an acid and peeled off the skin on my face down to the last raw layer and it hurt bad. Best relief I could find was soaking in the tub with a wet microfiber towel on my face.

I started doing leg lifts to kill time. At first 20 reps was a struggle but after a few days I was doing 30, 40 etc and I could tell results. Then I started doing sit ups as well. 20 was a huge effort but it got easier. My face healed but the exercise was working so I've kept it up. 10 months in I've lost about 15 lbs and my pant size is 38. I feel better and can do 100 sit ups without stopping and leg lifts about as long as I want to. The sit ups are easier than floor sit ups because the back of the tub stops you but they still work. I'm 61 and I always do at least my age +1.

I've also cut back on sugar and late night eating. I have 2 scrambled eggs with cheese and salsa every morning. That carries me til dinner with just a light lunch. My energy is up and I think this a program I can live with indefinitely. It seemed odd at first to take baths instead of showers in the morning but I like getting my exercise in before I start the day. I take a cup of coffee, a rubber duck and listen to Laura Ingraham while I soak my way to a chiseled physique. :D

Like they tell you first throw the salt shaker away. Everything is "processed food" now days, which means lots of salt. Cut down on sugar (like in coffee) as much as possible. Fruit on cereal sounds like it's healthy but too much sugar. Find something low cal that you can stomach and eat it three times (or 5 smaller meals) a day. Your goal is to loose about 20 lbs. asap so you don't get get discouraged. Given your situation don't do more than a little exercise until you loose the 20. I was 260 at 6'1" when I retired 2 years ago. I lost 40lbs. eating brown rice and chicken 90% of the time. Took about 6 mos. Weigh yourself EVERY day. I'm 65 and I picked up about 8 lbs. lately and I swear all I gotta do is look at a cheeseburger and I'm screwed.

Wheat Belly!

I am 64 and am (or was) in like shape - very difficult to lose any weight. Exercise will not do it, not that you should not do it for better health of course, but you can't exercise enough to make much difference - especially at our age.

About 2 months ago I decided that I needed to do something about my weight and how I felt - I began looking into controlling carb intake and stumbled across this book on Amazon called "Wheat Belly". I changed my diet to a low carb diet - eliminating wheat & wheat products plus sugar etc. The Doctor (cardiologist) who wrote the book explains how the hybridized wheat we eat today is nothing like the wheat of even 50 years ago - he makes a good case for this grain which is in so many foods today is causing much of the obesity and diabetes we see today in the country.

Anyway, since following this approach I have lost 18 lbs (about 2 lb/week), feel better that I have in years. I have about 25-30 more to go - my goal is to take my time and change my lifestyle. I am hardly ever hungry - it works and after a few days, it gets to be second nature.

Here's a link to the book - check out the reviews - makes interesting reading.
Good luck!

There was a medical show on TV a short time ago that indicated normal excersize, such as running, biking, swiming, etc wont get rid of stomach fat. Weight lift is the type of excersize they recommended.

Now think about this:

When God made woman He did so by taking the rib from man. If you read between the lines you'll discover that that rib was the one that keeps your stomach in.

So when you women see a man with a beer belly, THANK HIM.

As mentioned by a few, it's the sugars and carbs. Cut down or eliminate sugar and simple carbs, weight goes away. Lower you risk for diabetes.

Portion control, the amount you eat is more important than what you eat (within reason), combined with exercise. Check with your health insurance. Many will cover at least part of the cost for exercise equipment if prescribed by your doctor. A stationary bike while watching the evening news is a good way to get that exercise without undue strain and the knees.

yep, i was "in your shoes" about four years ago. i weighed about 260+ pounds and said time for a change. i joined a weight control program my wife was a member of and now i weigh 215.

i LOVE to eat and i know this isnt easy, but, you MUST eliminate ALL fast food, surgared soda and drinks, ALL alcohol, ALL salty and sweet snacks, most red meat.

LOAD UP on the fresh fruits and vegetables. Drink tea and coffee----NO cream or sugar and plain water. Protein = baked or broiled chicken, fish also beans, eggs and dairy.
cut out 80% of the starches/carbohydrates - bread, potatoes, rice, etc.

Exercise---slow and easy at first. Walking is great--keep your arms chest high while walking.

you MUST stay with it....this is a life change.

i have some easy exercise videos......p m me if you would like the links.

If tasts good spit it out! I am 6ft, 3 spins and 71 YO. Nothing works. Well, the atkins diet used to, but it about killed me. Gives ya the gout and kidney stones and probley kills your liver. No hope.

I lost 60 pounds [dropped from 280 to 220 on a 6'1" frame] by cutting out breads and the carbs [that means beer and chips and the good stuff]. Also, find a local YMCA or gym and do their water aerobics. That is extremely low impact yet burns more calories than you expect since you don't sweat and don't feel the jarring. Or go to any city pool or club pool and just walk the perimeter for an hour [you won't be the only one].

After 60 days you will be ready to start walking for more exercise. Start with 1/4 mile. By week 3 you will be at a mile. And get GOOD shoes.

It's simple math. Fewer calories intake and more calories burned = weight loss. And on guys it will drop from the trunk first.

Diets, talk of diets, public preception of fat people, all of it is a sore spot with me. All my life I have seen some people eat anything they wanted, not be particularly active yet stay thin without trying. My dad was one of them. I have been fat for the last 71 years. When I was a kid I remember my dad getting on my case when he seen me drinking water. He said thats what`s makeing you fat! Most guru`s will tell you it`s simply a mathmatical problem and solution. Amount of calory intake versus activity = calorys burned off.
Now I will admit that if you kill yourself exerciseing along with starving yourself some weight loss has to occur with extream and constant batteling without let up.
But I also belive it fact that some people just have a higher faster metabolism more than many other people. Some of us are born with a slower metabolism. It`s all in the luck of the draw with genetics.
My heigth as a young man of 17 years old was 6ft 2"s. Now at 71 years old I have to stretch to make 6ft. In my young years I had bull work, and ate like a horse. I weighed 255 to 265 and was very strong. Now I dont eat a 1/4 of what I used to and weigh anywhere from 295 to 310. My sister with the same two parents always looked like olive oil in popeye. Tall and skinny.
When I got my job the chief said I had to lose weight by the end of probation. It was a good job and I didnt want to lose it. I went to a doctor that put me on thyroid pills. The weight just melted off and I felt good. The doctor died and no doctor would put me back on the pills. They all said/still say, that I am in the low range of normal but not bad enough to get the pills. Meanwhile I gained weight back like a suma wrestler.
2+2 doesnt always equal 4.

Eat less, exercise more. It may work slow, but it will work. The "magic" pills & diet plans won't. (not for long anyway)

I want to tell you if you take off some weight you will feel like a new man. I've been there. You can do it.
