Default LAST UPDATE: I wonder if those of you who pray would

pray for my wife and for me and especially for our little dog, PJ?

LAST UPDATE: It's been a roller coaster for the last 4 weeks since the surgery. She was up, then down, then up again. Finally, yesterday, we had her put down. She was just worn out, new tumors bleeding in her stomach and unable or unwilling to eat.

She was never in pain and we took her to our Vet every few days to make sure. Last night he said, "We won some battles, but we've lost the war." Her death was very quick and very peaceful. I will miss her very much as will my wife (I have PJ's photo as my avatar).

I thank all of you for your kindness, comfort and prayers.

Bob

NEWEST UPDATE:Well we brought PJ home on Saturday since she had done so well during and after surgery. I saw a photo of the "thing" they removed from her. Her spleen should have been maybe 4" long, but this was about 10" long, had a huge almost softball sized tumor on it, and probably accounted for the fact we thought she was getting a little chubby. Now she's slim and trim since the doc got that horrible thing out of her.

She is trying to take it easy (she's a terrier, remember?) and goes back in two weeks to have the stitches removed. We have already decided we will not subject her to chemo as that would seriously affect the quality of her life and, in this case, probably would be in vain anyway.

I, again, want to sincerely thank each of you for your thoughts and prayers. I just don't have the ability to express how much they meant to us.

Bob & Sue

UPDATE: Doc called at 8:55 PM, said PJ did well in the surgery, that the tumor on her spleen was about the size of an orange and he'd removed it and the spleen as well as some black spots on other areas. No spots on the liver and he "thinks" he's cleaned out all the bad/questionable areas.

He said we probably could bring her home Sunday and, after she heals, treat her normally. He says, in the best case, we might have her two more years, most likely we will have her less than that, but no way to predict how long.

So, thank you for your prayers and responses, I read and appreciated every one of them.

Bob & Sue

As you may recall we lost our Scooter last September to a brain tumor. Our other dog, PJ, is only 7 and, a few days ago, seemed to be having some real trouble with fleas and seemed to be lethargic-not like a terrier at all.

I took her to the vet who gave her a shot, checked her over, gave us a special diet and said if she didn't get better, he'd run blood tests.

Over the last two days, she's gotten more lethargic, could hardly walk with my wife this morning though she was anxious to go. She couldn't poop last night or all day today so we took her back to the vet.

Imagine our surprise when the vet ran the blood tests and told us we needed an xray and ultasound. We saw what he saw, a large mass on her spleen and liquid sort of sloshing around in her stomach (likely blood).

She is undergoing exploratory surgery as I type this, and we are hoping for an outcome that doesn't require us to have her put to sleep on the operating table if there are tumors "all over the place" as the vet put it. The only good news is that he saw nothing on the liver during the ultrasound.

But, we are not going to let her suffer. We trust the vet and believe he will shoot us straight about what he finds. He's spending his Friday night working on our dog for not a lot of money compared to what human docs get, so I think he's okay.

Please pray for little PJ and for my wife, Sue, who is not taking this surprise well. She is a Nurse Practitioner and, sadly, she understands all this medical stuff.

Sorry for the rambling-guess I am not handling this too well myself.

Bob

I know exactly what you are going through. Our dog, Husker, had the same symptoms. Unfortunately, they caught his too late.

I wish you luck. Maybe they caught this early enough that they can remove the mass. Our dog had symptoms for a long time before they figured out what was going on. It makes me mad that they didn't figure it out when there might have been time to fix it.

Take care. Wishing you luck.

Ya gotta take care of the little ones, like the post above says. I scraped up $145 to take my best buddy into the vet after three days of not eating anything, not even people food. He just lay around, not doing much of anything. Ran tests, and he threw up during the vet's exam, everything was negative other than he had some bacteria in his stool. So he got basically doggy pepto-bismol stomach coating pills and some antibiotics, the next evening he was growling at the other dogs over HIS food, just like always. Had me worried sick though, but count the money well spent on him.

Just ran across this thread and wanted to offer thoughts and prayers for quick and complete healing for PJ, and a life that defies the odds. May you and Sue find peace and comfort knowing that God blesses all creatures great and small.

Blessings,

Those of us who are "dog/cat" people understand and hurt for you...........
We have a poodle named Scooter, as you had a "Scooter" and a cool-cat that has been diagnosed with lymphoma......
They bring SUCH joy but it is so hard to deal with when they are ill or pass on.

I just found this thread and will say a prayer also.
Our pets give us so much unconditional love and joy
so it's very hard to lose them. Rest assured that Gods
plan is the best and someday you will see them again.

Bob my prayers go up for your family. I pray that all is well for as long as possible. My wife brought home 2 little dogs 3 years ago. I never thought I would get attached to animals but now I know what you are feeling. They really are "man's best friend" I really hope the best for you and your wife and PJ

I feel for you, and understand your deep pain. Prayers sent. Over quite a few years, I've had to have a number of faithful dogs euthanized, and in the case of three of them, I had to do it by myself, mercifully and quickly with a .22. Nothing in my life has ever been harder for me to do. I know without a doubt that I've cried over more dogs than people. They are by and large selfless, loving and loyal - more than I can say for most humans. When it's their time and when they pass, it's heart-wrenching, for sure. May you meet again on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. If dogs don't go to heaven, I'm not sure it would be heaven.

John

Sorry about your loss. Our struggles with our dog were a little like yours. Up one day, down another.

We now have an overgrown German Shepherd puppy. He'll never replace Husker, but he's a great dog and a nice distraction. I didn't want to get another dog after Husker died, but I'm glad now that we did.

Take care.
