Default Obnoxious people

You meet a lot of these types when you work for the USPS, and I have a handful on my mail route. One couple in particular that likes to park all over the cul-de-sac and block multiple mail boxes. They decided to quit living in sin and get married, so last Saturday there were two cardboard boxes full of wedding invitations sitting by the mailbox. NICE invitations, judging by the envelopes, the bow and ribbon, the grape size dollop of wax sealing the envelope. These measured about 7" tall, 5" wide, and were non-machinable. Some were going international. Each had a .46 cent stamp on it. I left them, along with a nice note explaining that these were short paid, as there were surcharges for being oversize and too thick to machine cancel. I stated these should be carried to the PO and properly rated and postage affixed; that I could not accept them as they were not ready to go into the system. All true.

Today, they were there along with a note saying they would have my job if these were not picked up and the difference could be collected on the other end, as the couple was leaving town on vacation. Also, "hold all mail". I can do neither. The postage has to be correct, and a order to hold mail has to have beginning and ending dates, an address, a signature, and instructions on re-delivery. These two are just SOL. It rained like a monsoon for nearly three hours this afternoon, those invites are ruined, and likely washed away.

I have no idea how long they will be gone, but I hope they have a marvelous time on vacation.

Welcome to the "It's all about me" generation.

Some years ago the head doctors decided we could not discipline our own kids for fear of damaging their sense of self worth. There went good manners out the window.

For about 3 generations we've had rude people raising ruder kids. Their entitlement attitude is learned behavior.

Hopefully those two will be the last super fools you will have to deal with.
You know most folks are really good and are eager to please and be pleased.
Why would they risk such a high value mailing out in the weather and not listen to a professional or take more care???
Makes no sense to me. They got what they deserved.

I like the way they said they'll have your job like the regs were thought up by you and the USPS would kiss their popos for their meager offerings. I had the same kind of folks in my practice and I'm glad I don't have to deal with them anymore.

Granted, postal rates can be confusing, but we have window clerks to help with that problem. It makes me sick to think of the money these morons just wasted. And of course, you know who they will blame.

I leave short paid items every day. There is no sense taking it to the PO, sending it to the plant, having the plant reject it, return it to the PO, then me returning it a few days later to the sender. Too much manpower to handle an item and it gets delayed even further.

There is a certain indescribable gratification in performing your job to perfection.

Facilitating idiots in their quest to live with the consequences of the arrogance is just icing on the cake.

I would just document everything you did, inform your supervisor and let the jerks suffer the consequences. You can't fix stupid.

If it were me, I'd go ahead and mail them a nice wedding card and sign it; "Best wishes for a happy marriage from the gang at the Post Office"

But that's just me.

How about this thought; there is a possibility they are going to breed children..

They already bred a set of twins. The ugliest and nastiest acting twins on my mail route. I have four sets of twins on this route, all females, all under six years of age.

For a few years after I retired from my profession I held some customer service jobs just to fill the time and have benefits. One was working for the national complaint desk--the top of the escalation ladder--for an extremely large appliance repair service business. One day I took a call from a woman raising unalloyed hell because the company wouldn't send a tech out to repair her icemaker on a Sunday which was also a major holiday. I explained politely that this was not considered an emergency. She yelled, "You don't understand, my mother's in the next room dying of prostate cancer!" Somehow I kept from laughing. And she didn't have my job.

On another job, callers would sometimes demand that I break federal laws for them. If I declined, they would say, "I don't think you understand, I'm an attorney (or a doctor, or whatever)." I always hoped that on my last day on the gig I'd get one of those guys so I could say, "I don't think you understand, I'm a *******."

"Please Mr. Postman look and see, if there's a letter in your bag for me. Why's its taking such a long time to hear from that boy of mine. So many days you passed me by. See the tears standing in my eyes. You didn't stop to make me feel better by leaving me a card or a letter."

"Why don't you check it and see one more time for me? You gotta Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute/ Come on Mr. Postman look and see if there's a card or letter for me. Come on deliver the letter, the sooner the better Mr. Postman"

At first I thought you were talking about me. When I was working as a substance abuse counselor I would have court ordered clients that wanted me to sign off on their treatment even before they completed the court required. I always complied with their request. I would always send a letter to the probation officer stating the client was to busy to attend treatment. When they came back they were ready for treatment. I know you can't fix stupid, but you can let then experience consequences.

I did the same thing when I was in that business. A few were really unhappy with me when they went to prison, but I didn't put them there.

What the hell are they thinking about? Send a wedding invitation "postage due"? Can you even do that? I know what I'd do with a wedding invite that came postage due - right into the circular file. If you don't think enough of me to pay your own flipping postage....

I wonder if these buffoons thought to affix postage to the RSVP envelopes?

At any rate, I'm sure it will be a beautiful ceremony.

I'm glad you followed protocol. Wouldn't want to be guilty of a Federal Offense for mail-tampering, would ya?

Jr. works at the PO as a OIC. He gets the complaints aimed at the carriers. Most of them involve non-delivery of mail because the morons won't lock up their vicious dogs and they have to come to the PO and pick up their mail. He recently told one of them what they have to do to get their mail. They still left their vicious sxxx eaters out and the mail wasn't delivered again. Then they filed a complaint against the carrier that they were "doing 100 mph" down their road. The private road is less than 1/4 mile long and littered with mud holes (and pit bulls) making that speed impossible. They were then told to move their mail box to a main road. They didn't and they still pick up their mail at the PO and they still file complaints. As John Wayne once said, " Life is tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid."

I doubt that "stupid" is really the reason so many of us run into so many of "them". I think its total self-centeredness, possibly combined with the lack of any role model that would have helped them learn how to get along with other people. What used to be called common courtesy is not that common anymore. Rudeness and coarseness seem to be the rule. Recently while on vacation, in a modest but decent restaurant, three young men sitting at a nearby table couldn't seem to put a sentence together without loud use of f-bombs. I quietly approached them and asked them to watch their language as it was offensive to my wife and I. I think I truly surprised them because I smiled as I said it. One then said he would talk anyway he felt like talking and that if I didn't like it we could take it outside. Being 70 years old and with a bad heart, I smiled and asked him if he ever heard the expression "don't pick a fight with an old man; he might not fight but will kill you", all with a nice smile. Not another word was said and I returned to my table for a nice dinner.

Any chance of hiding a camera? I would love to see the look on their faces when they see that box of melted mushy paper, still sitting there when they come home.

Definitely keep us updated on the rest of the story. Ed

Default UPS PICKUP

don't hold your breath for that Christmas tip, as if they would have anyway. I would give a heads up to your supervisor and maybe even the HR dept to CYA. maybe they will get it right the 2nd time around, lol. and keep your eyes open for Bridezilla and her Beau.

Re: OP. Dealing with demanding self-important people is challenging. Personally, I'd have taken the boxes of invitations and placed them under the porch, etc. out of the weather.

All due respect, that is exactly why this society of self-absorbed, self-centered people act the way they act.
They have led a lifetime of always having somebody take care of everything for them. They have never had to suffer any consequences for their actions.
I say to hell with their wedding invitations. They need to learn a lesson on how to act and treat people.

One of the hardest life lessons I had to learn years ago was the fact that all of the things wrong in my life were my fault.
After I learned that, it was up to me to continue on the same path or to man up and change. I hated what my life had become, so I learned to change and act right.

I wish the offenders the willingness and ability to learn.

That would have made a great episode on Seinfeld.

Just another example of self absorbed, self centered people.

Thanks for the story. I needed the laugh.

Default moving the boxes

that's a bad idea imo. if you had touched/moved the box it would have been your responsibility for anything that may have happened to it. they were warned/instructed in writing and responded in same that they received the notice. hope you saved the notes. I know how stressful a time that can be, as my wife wrote out all our own wedding invitations, and can't believe they would leave something that important outside, open to the elements and rely on the ups driver to take care of their business.

I guess I am one of the odd people here. I have never got a kick out of hurting or putting down people even when they deserve it.
