Around 30 years ago when I was young and dumb I got mixed up with a group that was into the whole Armageddon thing. Everyone had to have a weapon capable of at least semi-auto, high capacity. I bought a Model A Uzi that could be converted to full auto by simply changing the bolt, changed to pistol length barrel by simply changing the barrel, it was all legal even if all the parts were in the same kit as long as it wasn't put together. The deal back then was to have at least 1K rnds buried in an accessible marked location. I thought that over and used black plastic drain pipe, ends glued tight. I almost forgot about that stuff but ran across the location site map last year went out dug it up and it was all still beautiful as the day it went in the ground.
I don't think its a bad idea to have at least 1K rnds in the calibers you would need for protection/survival...this ammo is never borrowed from although can be rotated. You can't have too much ammunition, it will always hold its value if times get tough and as trade stuff could be worth its weight in silver literally. I know a guy still in that Armageddon mentality that has a military conex buried near his place in Arizona that is full of ammunition, the stuff was purchased back in the 70's, he calls it his retirement plan.

I keep a 1000 rds min for each Cal. over what I shoot each month.

And Really if that isn't enough to get me out of trouble...I'm in too deep.

I have made it my personal crusade to be the root cause of the pre-election ammo shortage. A firearm without ammo is a club.

That is not a good idea. ATF would call it constructive possession.

Default Ammo?

To paraphrase an old Air Force saying, the only time you got too much ammo is when the ammo locker is on fire!

See ya at the range.

I think I heard this question about 20 years ago (perhaps from my inner self). I think that it started with standard-capacity mags (for wide-body autoloaders), and sort of naturally extended to ammo. Since then, I have bought ammo when it was reasonable or, on a good day, cheap. I haven't bought much lately. I'm 67, and not planning to bequeath more than a few thousand rounds, so the local fire regulations work out well enough for me.

I have seen this question quite a few times since I first started getting careful about my ammo supply. Each time, the supply returned to normal fairly soon, and those who were careful could stock up. This time, the prices are mostly high, which wasn't what happened the last few times. Whether this will continue remains to be seen.

I will say that I have seldom regretted an ammo purchase.

If a good portion of it is Yugo brass 7.62x39 & x54R I would prefer his retirement plan to mine. His has certainly done a lot better the past few years...

Default How much ammo on hand?

I'll answer this the same way Rolls Royce does when asked about horsepower output for their engines... "sufficient".

For the upstairs guns, as much as the floor joists would hold. For the basement guns........three times that. Too bad all my guns were lost in that horrid boating accident.........third one!

Are you worried about a collapse of society? If you aren't worried about doomsday, how much ammo depends on how much you shoot. Right now, with 3 young children, my shooting time is limited. It would take me several years to go through as much ammo as some of these guys are talking.

I think it's what you feel comfortable with and how much money you have available. But saying that, we all know the possibilities of things happening this year because of the up coming election or whether or not there will be an election. As we get closer to Nov. things will start to unravel themselves. If the UN gets the small arms treaty laws passed we may find ourselves in a totally different situation. I suggest you buy what you can afford to stock away, you may need it more then you think. Also it will depend on where you live, in the city or a rural area. I like what LTC commented on, I don't really like sharing that sort of information. It's like going to the hospital for treatment and the doctor asking you if you have any guns in your house. Some of this information could be used against you if ended up in the wrong hands.

Uhhh, that would equate to about 27,000 rounds here.

But in principle, I have to agree. I have enough to hunt for a couple seasons if I can not find the particular ammo I prefer to hunt with.

To minimize ammo collection size, I consolidated the calibers I shoot. No weirdo, oddball stuff in the cabinet. Just calibers that are common and easy to locate. It is cheaper and less frustrating to find ammo that way.

If I remember correctly, .380 Auto was near impossible to acquire after the last elections. I ordered a few hundred more of these, some .22 and some 40 cal yesterday. There is no such thing as "TOO MUCH".

While I'm not too worried about a Zombie Apocalypse, living in Kalifornistan is a bit different from Free States. Our state gov is extremely anti gun and they've figured out that it's easier to restrict ammo than to outlaw guns (for the moment.) They've tried before and they will try again. They have already succeeded to the point that many vendors won't sell as much as a rifle sling to Kalifornistan and some sellers actually still believe that ammo is restricted statewide instead of a few of the more rabidly anti jurisdictions like L.A. & San Francisco.

I may have a couple extra boxes laying around here somewhere...

Actually, I have an industrial kitchen sized roll. Its 18" wide and 1000 feet long. Just enough. And if you buy it in those sizes, you get a lifetimes supply. The same rule applies to ammo. Buy in bulk, just like tinfoil.

As long as you have room and money, there is no end. I am 66 but, I'll bet my grandkids will shoot a lot of my ammo up, and mabe even the great grandkids. I have bought so many cases of 22 shells when they were on sale since the 60's that you couldn't haul them away in a pickup load. Could reload for several rifle cal. for years on my stockpile. Guess you know how they will take my guns away if they ever try............1 round at a time.

A kid I grew up with; his granpa used to move his ammo around...... with a forklift. He had an incredible collection of old, hard to come by rifles from yesteryear, and he had grabbed ammo for everything he owned for decades. His point?? "They have not made a lot of this for 30 or more years. The brass means more than the bullet itself."
Not so necessary in today's world where many more people are into creating brass as needed. 40 years ago, I imagine there were far fewer folks with the equipment to do that.

i thought i had enough until SWMBO's grandfather pasted.
it took three of us about three hours to haul all the loaded rounds, bullets, cases, powder and loading equipment out of the basement.
i swear he was prepping for the end....

i did not know one could have that much ammo or different calibers in the same place at the same time...
i tire just thinking about it...

The general consensus seems to be "not enough". Since I do own a number of "oddball" calibre revolvers (think 0.455 Webley and 32-20 revolver), plus a few that require 30 Mauser (semi-autos) I do have a reasonable number of heads and cases. Plus a reasonable number of other calibres that are a little more modern. Numbers? I ran out of fingers to count them on quite a few years ago. Dave_n

The only way to tell if you have enough ammo is if the floor buckles or the foundation starts to crack. Till then you dimply dont have enough ammo.

I'll put it this way, I have enough to last for about a year of heavy shooting and the ability to reproduce the same for the next four years should the need arise. I'm still not done prepping.
