Remember the basics
"The rules of 3"
You can live:
3-minutes without air
3-days without water
3-weeks without food.
Your first concern should be safe air, then clean water, then a lasting food supply.

I have guns and lots of ammo. If there's food around, I'll have the tools to get it.

Pulled my leg, I just bought the book on my tablet to read..... just in time too since I read all of my other books.

I have a nice sized garden (about 50ft wide and 150ft long) that I started a few years back with the help of my future father in law... he has one that's really big. Loads of different veggies that I practically live off of now. I have enough seed to last a few years not counting the seed I can collect. I have a lot canned so far.... and enough garlic to keep the vampires away. I also have about 6 months worth of other canned food stored up. 164 acres of woodland with lots of wild edible flora and fauna. The critters would last a while hopefully... I'm not too near to any large population of people. I'm decent with a rifle but better with snares, so I can catch em if I need em. Plus I've eaten bugs before and could do so again if need be. I also have two fresh water supplies.

I'm not sure how much spam and beans I would want to eat over a period of time, the fumes off of those in a enclosed area will make a glass eye cry.

I think I would have to supplement them with venison and onions, oh wait, that might not help.

I have enough and I add regularly.

People that say they're going to raid others supplies for themselves had better be really, really good or they'll be really, really dead.

If you come to me openly and in peace, I'll do what I can to help you, but not to the point of jeopardizing our survival.
If you come to me with malice in your heart, you won't want what you'll get.

Not available to who?

I try to keep a year's worth of food here.
Ya have to eat it and replenish or it goes bad though, so I might be down to about 7 months right now.

Y'all that figure on just zipping out and taking what you need from folks that have planned ahead --- Be aware - We have actually planned ahead.

I lived with the Mormons in Utah for 7 years, good folks...I agree with them that you should be able to sustain your family for at least a year. Water is the real challenge, you should be able to purify whatever water you can get your hands on, bleach works in a pinch.

As someone else mentioned, at my size I'll still be here while all you skinny folks are dropping like flies!

If you want a fairly good read about an end of the world scenario, try "Lucifer's Hammer" (if you can find it.) In this book, a large asteroid or meteor hits Earth, and wipes out a lot of the civilized world...and of course sets off a lot of weather problems, as well as the struggles to re-establish some sort of civilization. It does point out how dependent on technology and manufactured things that we have no real idea of how they are made....even simple things, like a needle, or critical things like medicines (do you know how to make antibiotics?)

I'm one of those who likes to buy his food fresh or reasonably so I don't have much in the way of canned goods. I probably have about 20 lbs of meat in the freezer and enough pasta and rice to get me through a few weeks. After that, I'm getting hungry.

I've often thought about laying in an emergency supply of freeze dried meals but have never acted on it.

My biggest concern would be medication. I have enough insulin on hand for a year but things like my blood pressure meds, I only have a month or so because of insurance. Although, if I'm starving to death I wouldn't care so much about my blood pressure.

Normally I don’t respond to this sort of topic. But, it’s Thursday morning... I’ve got my coffee... and I’ve got some time, so let’s go!

A Chicken Little world view will have driven some to be well fixed for any such eventuality as described in the OP. Others will be like Aesop/s grasshopper, out in the cold. The vast majority of folks are going to have to deal with the reality that having adapted well to modern life, they are not well adapted to a sudden return to a pre-electric/gasoline era.

Living in a small town, my wife and I would have sufficient food for at least a week or two. Then we’d have to get creative. So would a lot of people. Everyone can talk all they want to about hunting, but the deer and rabbits, and squirrels and dogs and cats and rats would sooner or later thin out. Another real stress would be those folks who soon passed away because of lack of access to medicine and medical devices. Every day I visit older church members in their homes and at the long-term care facilities. Many if not most simply would not be able to live long, even if sufficient food were made available to them. The same would be true of infants/children with medical issues. Especially at risk would be mothers w/ infants/small children as they would be less able to provide for themselves in what some envision as a post-apocalyptic scenario.

The key to long term survival would be to join in extended family groups with other people sharing skills, ability, etc. to produce the necessary food as well as security needs. Those who would end up surviving and coming out in the best condition would be those who best learned how to so live in a modern style hunter/gather group centered around subsistence farming as this would offer the very best long term sustainable living model. Regardless of how well prepared one might be, the individual on his own or in only a small single family group would have a very short term future.

For everyone concerned Spring would be a hard time. Somewhere back years ago I saw it described as “dying time.” This stemmed from the fact that a community would be living on what was left of the previous harvest, waiting for the crops in the fields, etc, to be ready for harvest. It makes one mindful of the Pilgrims and their Thanksgiving celebration... it wasn’t in April... or May... but after the harvest... October/November. It would be hard regardless of where one might be living. As a child I remember a lady in a Wednesday night prayer service telling of how she and her mother survived in post WWII Berlin, living in the basement of a bombed out building and eating grass, etc. My wife and I have been through two floods while living in N.O., LA. It can get very “interesting” when everything is under water.

How about New Orleans, La? Bosnia? Mexico? Philippines?Sarajevo? Most of Africa?
Remember, in any 3rd world country today, right now, people are living a subsistence existence, they wake up in the morning hungry and spend most of their day searching for food and water. When this scenario changes, and everyone is on the same level, what little food to be found will be fiercely fought over till it is all gone.
