I have no problems with the Advertisements - it helps keep this great forming running.
However, I would consider upgrading (via donation) for the option of eliminating advertisements.
Great idea wheelgun28.

The fact is that this forum won't stay open without ads.
We sincerely appreciate all donations, but they simply won't carry the load.
I'll get back to you this afternoon with some more data.

Well, then do us a BIG favor: Eliminate the stupid ads that we can not see, these hidden voice over ads that disrupt our reading on the site.
I gotta tell ya; the second one pops, I drop this site like a bag of rocks, and then come back later. An ad that has a little x that you can close, and definitively say "I do NOT want to look at you or your product" is a good way to go. But to have mr Babbleon in the background telling me 'blablablabla........' while I am trying to take in information and concentrate; and this annoying voice can not be easily silenced by a simple x ????? Well, that vendor loses all respect from me, and will NEVER get me to buy their product, nor will I advocate their product positively to anyone else.
Wanna see me 'dis' Leupold scopes, even though I like them??? Have them run a hidden sound bite ad. I will remind people every day about their ad practices, and how they suck for it.
I must say; this also goes for websites which do not positively deal with their ad campaigns also. And I am quite certain I am in the majority on this........ there are a LOT of gun/ shooting websites.
So, please....drop those annoying ads.

I like the shoe ads.
Maybe we can have food ads at lunch and dinner times.

I do not know about financing a web site but how do sites much larger than this one survive with no ads??
Even with the ads, who actually clicks on them??
If ads are necessary does the left side ad really have to be as large as it is?? I have a wide screen monitor and maybe 25% is covered in ads (on the left side)plus the top and in the posts for non paying "members"

I believe the forum makes money from the ads regardless of clicks. How many here do you think are actually clicking on ads for women's shoes or gun control orgs or Obama's campaign? And what's the payout for a click, anyway, if that's how it works? 1/100th of 1 cent or so? If it were clicks making the money, all Lee would have to do is get some bored teenagers to sit and click on ads here 24/7 and retire early a rich man.
For someone like me who never clicks on ads (and I'd bet most others don't, either), why not block them? I'm just trying to help those who are saying they're having problems with the forum running slow and whatever else due to the ads.

TODAY: The new ad deal (spelled ad) is relatively new (3-4 days) so why not relax and see what happens. I'm sure the Lee is busting his butt to figure some way to placate you whiners.
OR: There's 96,000 memberships, each of which take up some bandwidth. I'm sure 30,000 members could "take a hike" dissolve membership and not be missed. That would open up spots for the more appreciative. There are 100's of gun boards out in computerland.

Why hire bored teenagers? With a few weeks of training I'm sure Lee could teach some of the guys here how to do it.

I don't have any problem with the ads themselves.
It's the new size that's a problem.
I've got a small laptop screen and wind up with ads on 2/3s of the screen.
Not to mention that the thread display is set by the first few adds. When you get past a couple of them, there's nothing but blue screen for the left 1/3 of the page.
It's fine that they're paying for the site, but can't we get them back to the old smaller size?

Ads pay what I watch on tv. I wouldnt run a site of any kind either if I didnt get something out of it, so the basic idea of ads doesnt bother me. I am just wondering if thats whats been messing up my computers. I am a member of other sites that doesnt have ad`s and those sites work well and are fast. This site used to run well on my computer but I sure notice my problems just since we got them. It might be totaly my fault as I am not computer savy and havent been buying all those security systems. It seems anything more than 5 or 6 replys to a post, like 15 or 30 and the computer wont scroll at all! I am writeing this on a older computer I though was junk as I cant use my new one here, or very little.
I even took them and paid "experts" and ended up buying new and the newest laptop is now my worst. I am here a lot and use other sites for just a few minuets a day in compareison.

They are wasting the whole length of the thread. The longer it goes the more side bar developes.
Hmm, how can I benefit?

I have to say, these ads may be intrusive, but they are quite intuitive. My wife gave me a sour look this morning and when I looked back at the screen, a Viagra ad popped up.

On a similar note, this is probably why I 1) get Duracell ads and 2) make sure Mr. Wrench can't see my screen.

We've been running ads for about three years now- since June, 09.
If you are running without AT LEAST having an antivirus program or an antimalware program, you're in trouble or going to be. Get some help on that and learn how to keep your computer clean now and then. They get loaded up with just pure junk that is not malicious, but it will slow you down.

YES! I posted this in the forum office and did not see this thread...
My screen is 20 wide straight across. Ads are 6 inches or better. Resolution is low.... if I ever went to high, the forum would be about 3 inches wide!!!

Are you saying I don't have to buy everything in these adds? I thought that was part of the membership. Anyone want to buy some nice hair products?

If you have a 20+" monitor (they are measured diagonally) there is no reason the ads are taking up that much space.
This website is optimized for 1280x1024 resolution, still visible with no slider in 1024x768 at 93%. There isn't a monitor 17" or larger that can not use at least 1280x1024, most will go higher. Most 15" monitors will run 1280x1024.
You are incorrect when you say it would look worse in a higher resolution, everything always looks better at a higher resolution, the only issue I have is if I go to high, my old eyes can't read the print. That is why we have large font skins available.
Some settings you may want to look at. If you are running Internet Explorer, Click View and make sure you are set to 100%. In FireFox it is view, zoom, reset. That will put your browser into standard magnification. Ctrl and the + or - key will increase or decrease the magnification accordingly.
When you have reset your browsers magnification (most save the these settings to individual websites so it shouldn't affect any other website), you may want to experiment with the different font sized skins available at the bottom left of every page.

It's a 21 inch. I measured that way just so I could figure a percentage easier. My res is set on 1280x720 so I can read the print!
I can go to 1920x1080 but print is no good, and also pages are like half sized.
On here I always use the large font. The small is bad enough for me, but at high res way worse. High res my homepage only takes up the middle third of screen.... and anything else is more or less the same.... which is why I always left at a very low resolution...

They were really weird Lee; no subscreen, no hidden window that had popped up in the background, nothing to locate and close out.
I went in reading about the favorite guitarist thread; all of a sudden, a commercial was playing.
It happened again in a thread in the M&P15 sub forum, forget which thread. Very random, not sure of what it was.
It had happened 4 times. Next time, I will take a good note of it and notify admin for you.
I will say, I DO appreciate the forum, and am happy to be here with you! Thanks, Paul.

We have an important Site here that needs to be preserved and if ads or other Fundraisers are neccessary, I'm all for it.

Folks are also using iPhones, droids, ipads and other tablets as well as the standard large desktop boxes and laptops that support 1024x768 or higher. Smartphones and tablets...not so much.
Also, the other two issues that CAN occur are 1) load times and 2) bandwidth for active ads. Most folks have unlimited data and a very wide pipe...others do not.
