Jr. and I went to see "Louisiana Joe" this weekend. He just happens to be my brother and it seems that one or the other of us is visiting every two or three weekends, depending on who has the closest gunshow. He was in Hattiesburg three weekends ago. This time there was a show in Gonzales, La., about 50 miles from his house. We did the usual mooch thing by eating his food (chicken and sausage gumbo) and drinking his tasty adult beverages as he did with us when he was last here.
Joe's got a nice way to get to Gonzales from his house. Someone built a 4-lane highway through a swamp and forgot to put any trafffic on it. It was rather scenic and built the traditional Louisiana way by digging canals on both sides of the highway and dumping the muck in the middle to make the road on.
On the way over we saw a couple of bald eagles and the usual dead nutria in the road. There were a few "garbage mountains" that I assume were built from leftovers from New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Other than that it was flat and wet.
I found a Ithaca riot gun at the show. I wondered why it did not have the front "BB" sight until I realized that it never had one. Someone at some point in time had removed the original heat shield/bayonet lug for whatever reason. It was reasonable so I bought it hoping I might find the heat shield/ bayonet lug sometime. If anybody has one I'm in the market for one. I also bought a rubber nightstick filled with lead. I don't really have any use for this but I used to carry something similar years ago and it might come in handy if my pesky neighbor ever gets out of rehab and comes back to my house. For some reason he thinks his crisis is my crisis. He doesn't know it yet, but I filed trespassing charges on him while he was gone.
We left the show and went to Popeyes Chicken and ate seasoned fried chicken, red beans and rice, and dirty rice. A couple of strawberry beers and the heartburn went away. (a few hours later) We stopped by the local Cabella's after lunch and even though their prices gave me some more heartburn I did manage to find a semi-deal on a brick of .22"s. The ride back to Joe's house was mostly uneventful as I napped as Joe was playing some Ray Stevens songs real loud because his hearing is even worse than mine. About ten minutes from Joe's house I was awakened by swerving and braking as Joe dodged an alligator in the road. He's a true conservationist.
Jr. and I retrieved our stuff (except for my favorite pair of crocks) at Joe's house and headed home. We stopped at Rouse's Super Market in Slidell. They sometimes have some specials and the liquor is cheaper than it is in Mississippi. They had the shoplifter special today. We had gathered our stuff and I gave Jr. the ATM card to check out while I was to wait for him in the truck. On the way out the door I was almost knocked down by a hefty woman who was running out the door. About five or six male employees swiftly appeared and chased the woman out into the parkking lot. I was outside by now and watched as she ran down a row of cars and turned and tried to run back to her car. The guys blocked her off and one of them, an off duty cop, handcuffed her. I learned several things from this. Don't shoplift. Don't try to outrun thin people if you're fat. Flip flops aren't good running shoes. A few minutes later an on duty cop showed up and took her to jail.
Overall the weekend was entertaining and I may be able to do something with the Ithaca. Don't forget abouut the heat shield/bayonet lug. If you have one for a decent price let me know.
