Cool Ground squirrel at 10 paces

I just started an ice cream sandwich from the freezer and looked out the back door and spotted this little varmit in the back yard. I quickly put the bar back in the freezer and removed the glass and screen in the door hoping not to spook him. I then got the air rifle and a pellet and took aim on the 'lil rat. THWACK! He stood up and flopped over and then crawled off towards the retaining wall. I found the blood trail and followed it where he laid a couple feet away.

I've been trying to catch the red squirrels with the live trap for relocation to help save some of my peaches. Every time I bait the trap lately the baits soon disappear. I think this little bugger has been raiding the trap.

Having a little Russell's Reserve over ice on the front porch at deer camp. He comes out from under porch at 10 ft., you use what you have.

Ryno,
I've got what appears to be the exact same Chinese pellet rifle. Mine was $29 and it really packs an accurate punch. Single shot, .177 cal., single swing-down pump, hokey chamber/loading system, no safety...but accurate, powerful and fun to shoot correct? C.B.

I was groundhog hunting a few years back and was lying between an old barn and a small dirt bank looking over a soybean field when, not 15 feet away crawled a groundhog from the bank. I decided to just sight down the barrel and get him....HAH, that didnt work! big miss! Well, instead of going back to the solitude of his hole in the dirt bank, he runs toward the barn and nestled into the corner of the barn and the cement pad leading into it....and there layed the cinder block that claimed his life

CB, they would appear to be the same other than you paid $10 more than I did. It was bought at one of those close out places. It is a decent shooting gun with enough power for rabbits and squirrels.

Nope... a World War II "Red Barron" chrome helmet with a kaiser spike on top.
And a camo shirt with the sleeves cut off.

Dropped one of the many grey squirrels that have been destroying my wife's bird feeders and eating all the suet & bird food. Got it with my Grandfather's Winchester 290 from a little over 10 yards right through the chest. One down many more to go.

Had an Uncle that was charged by a wounded groundsquirrel. He never was "right" after that encounter. Be careful. He only may have wanted part of your ice cream sandwich and not the peaches at all?

Heh, heh,

Regards

A little tip for your live trap that seems to work very well for me. This only works with the two door system with the trip tray in the middle. I close and lock one of the doors. I place the bait inside the trap against the closed door. That was the critter has to walk in the only open door, over the trip tray to get to the food. When they walk on/over the trip tray they are done fer. I once caught two rabbits at the same time using this technique. I have found if you leave both doors open and bait the trip tray that a lot of critter are very delicate eaters and can have a full meal without tripping the trip tray.

You guys are professionals! I was once "charged" by a groundhog while walking my St. Bernard Nick around our farm pond. Nick scared him up from somewhere and he came barrelling straight at me with who-knows-what on his mind. I quickly determined there was no danger to Nick (he was a long ways behind said groundhog) so I drew the trusty Model 29, but misjudged the rascal's speed and fired off a shot that landed right behind him as he was probably no more than fifteen feet from me! This made no difference at all to the hog, who continued on his course and ran right between my legs (literally!)... and kept on going!

After being rousted by a 180-pound dog, and being shot at and missed by a 180-pound man with a 44 Magnum, I figured he deserved a pass for the rest of the day, so we went on our way and did not bother him further.

I loved his stories with the air rifles.

I shot him, tossed him in the trash (I say "him", coulda been a "her" - I didn't look that close) and posted the great hunting story on another board. Then I realized that a hunting story was worthless without pictures, so I went out to the trash can and took a picture.

So, howd you cook him? Heres a good recipe for woodchuck. Once they're dead you skin em and then strip the meat off the bones. Run the meat through a grinder and you've got ''ground chuck''

I once shot one of those little ground squirrels with a 357 magnum (Ruger Security Six). I was with a friend in the woods of Maine when this little head popped up about 20 yards away. I took aim and fired. We figured it had run off, but to our surprise, I had nailed it in the head. I could never do that again.

gizamo, I bet that's the same type of rifle I heard the "Old Timer's" talk about, many
times, when I was younger. The kind that always seemed to be described this way,
"You could shoot the eye out of a squirrel at 100 yd's with it."

Even if it isn't, it sure is purdy.......

Wife saw a woodchuck this afternoon in the newly planted no till cornfield next to our house. Saw him after dinner and he dived in the weeds before I could get to the deck. Waited for a half hour and out he came. He was a good hundred plus yards out. I hit him at least three out of five shots while he was running. Not sure who in the picture is more gruesome.
