Trip to the range today
I had two new M1 Garands to sight in and in preparing to go to the range I saw the 10 boxes of 44 Mag reloads on the ammo shelf that I had loaded in the early 80s, so I decided to take a couple of boxes and start using them up. Well, it took 12 rounds and the Riteus brothers (Art & Bert) started complaining. I guess that is the end of my 44 magnum shooting. Darn! its heck to get old.

I have had to back the .44 down to about a 1000fps. I agree that getting old sucks but I am glad I did a lot when I was younger. It is better being a has been than a never been. If I live long enough I will only be able to stand the recoil of a .22 but at least I won't have to reload. Larry

Now, that's a real-world range report for sure! Sorry to
hear those guys gave you trouble. They've been up here
causing trouble, too.

2 new Garands? You HOG! I know the feeling, but a little less powder is really more enjoyable, anyway. Man, when that bottom joint in your thumbs hurt, you really feel helpless.

Did you fill in a couple sight in cards and stick them in the butt stock?
It is best to dial the rear sight back down to keep from knocking it around when storing and transporting.

I know this is a Smith Forum but I'll fill you all in a little more. The Springfield 1943 w/1950 bbl shot 6 into 1" and two fliers which opened it up to 1 3/4". The Winchester 1943 w/1952 S.A. bbl shot 2" and 1 flyer that opened it to 2 3/4". The springfield bbl t-3, m-3 and the Winchester bbl t-5, m-5. I took these out to test their functioning not accuracy. I shot on the 50 yard range (at 96 degrees I did not plan on spending alot of time walking back and forth to the 200 yd targets). These rifles were shot just out of the CMP box, ran a patch down the bbl, checked for excess grease in the bolt, and ran the rear sight up 10 clicks I used LC 69 ammo.

Sounds like that Springfield is a shooter. My Winchester 1942 can shoot some very nice groups at 100 yards. At some point in its life it was rebuilt at the Letterkenny Arsenal and got a NM barrel installed. I love Garands!
