Default Tiger Kills Woman at Zoo

A Siberian tiger got out of its enclosure and killed a woman zookeeper at the zoo in Cologne, Germany this weekend.

The zoo director shot the tiger from a nearby rooftop, weapon not stated.

At least, the guy had a gun and used it. Many zoos are unprepared for such incidents.

Careless mistake on someones part. Darn shame.
The Zookeeper and the animal. One can only hope
it was her own mistake that killed her. If it was
someone else it would be awfully hard to come to
grips with knowing you we're responsible for her
and the Tigers demise.

Terrible, period. Would someone, at least once in a while, use the lounge to share an uplifting story? I realize the news is what it is, and my heart goes out to the people involed & their loved ones. A beautiful animal doing what is natural for him to do, and someone who probably loved the animal, are dead due to a brief lapse in judgement. Every time I hear about something like this, I think of Steve Irwin. I was on vacation at Myrtle Beach when he was killed by a stingray of all things. I was in the bathroom, my wife had the TV on, and when I came out, she looked at me like a member of our family had died. We both really liked him, and watched his show when ever possble. In my former life, when I was able, I enjoyed SCUBA diving, and the rays were everywhere, minding their own business. Steve handled deadly snakes, crocodiles, and anything else that came along. Then one beautiful day he is swimming along above a swimming ray, no intended threat, the ray doesn't know that it is Steve Irwin, it does what comes natural, and now one of nature's greatest stewards is lost. Husband, father, son, and a great friend to all who knew him. Sorry for the dissertation, it just brings it back to mind everytime mankind and nature have an unfortunate outcome. I am an animal lover, even the deadly ones, as was the zoo keeper who was lost, and things like this turn some people into the " if it can kill a human, then kill it first " kind. Off the soapbox now.

dlbx2: I brought home from the last gun show a Hammerli-Walther Olympia Pistole in 22 short. The workmanship is exquisite. Once I got the adjustable grip adjusted to my hand it's like wearing a wooden glove with a steel extension. Even I can shoot the thing passably well. I grin just thinking about it.

A truly unfortunate consequence of a human error. Neither of them should be dead.
As for the rifle, I have been told by a couple guys familiar with zoo operations that large dangerous game rifles are often kept at zoos, because of the nature of their animals. There may not be any other choice if TSHTF.
