Default Current FBI Sidearms & "Criminal Minds"

I know we have some FBI agents here, SIG P-220 for one.

I gather that with the exception of some veteran agents like him still authorized to carry SIG's, the Bureau approves only Glocks now. No revolvers, even for off-duty use.

I'm thinking of writing a, "Criminal Minds" fan fiction or two. I do watch the show but have seldom gotten a really good look at their guns. I think Dave Rossi (Joe Mantegna) has a Springfield or other tricked-out .45 auto, meant mainly for SWAT personnel. Dr. Spencer Reid has the only revolver, a S&W M-65 with three-inch bbl., which he wears in an unlikely position, too far forward.

The rest seem to have Glocks, including some small ones, one worn by SSA Aaron Hotchner as an ankle gun in addition to his belt piece.

Are 9mm guns still used, especially in the small sizes? My knowledge of Glocks is limited, but I know the full size M-17 and the mid-size M-19. What is the little one? That's probably Hotchner's ankle gun and the one worn on the belt by the female agents. (JJ is my favorite of them; the blonde.)

Are .40 Glocks the norm now? In which models? How have they fared? Are .45's used? Presumably in .45 ACP, not .45 GAP.

What ammo is issued in each caliber?

If anyone else watches, "Criminal Minds", speak up, if you are SURE of their guns. But I especially want comment from actual agents.

I'm almost sure that Reid's .357 isn't really used anymore. I think the deal on tnis is that he can't shoot an auto well and got an exception order allowing him to carry the revolver. This is more likely on TV than in real FBI service, I bet.

The unit involved is the BAU, who chase serial killers, working as profilers.

What fics I've read are mainly romances, getting Hotchner together with Emily. This seems to appeal to most readers, who are female. I'd like to write a couple of more realistic stories. And I want to slant them as pro-gun to offset the show's anti-gun bias. This can be accomplished by having other agents or local police make pro-gun comments, without preaching. I want readers to see some pro-gun material, and they may never see that on TV or in the news. Most are not "gun people", and they sure don't hang out on boards like this. I do want the gun info to be correct.

I'll check the Imdb gun database to see what they use on the show. But I want the real FBI info, too.

Thanks,

T-Star

I was in a class a couple years back with a FBI agent who carried the issued Glock in 40, I think a 22, although as I recall the 23 is an option. However, G21s are an option (I think personal purchase) as it is easier to shoot because of the different recoil impulse. His 40 malfed a time or two in class, no shock.

Scroll down to the bottom of this thread and you can see several others on this topic. Looks like one is yours.

I want to know who the mystery women is that Reed calls on the pay phone?? I must have missed the episode that started that relationship??

When the show first came out I watched it all the time, after a while it just got to be too brutal. Last night was one of those really creepy ones.

No one yet knows who the mystery woman is who Reid called on the pay (not "pat") phone. I saw that episode, but not anything else that might involve her. The fan fiction hasn't caught up to her yet, as far as I've read. And I haven't seen Blake (Jeanne Tripplehorn's new character) in a fic yet. Many are bitter that Emily was fired. A LOT of female fans want to "ship" her with Aaron in fics. ("Shipping" is wanting a relationship between two characters, whether the show depicts that or not.)

I don't know why that actress (Paget Brewster) left, and the show doesn't seem to be saying. I saw an interview with Joe Mantegna on, "Extra" and all he'd say is, " These things happen for a reason and we try to move on."

G22's are sensitive to limp wristing. Most likely the gun wasnt jamming instead the agent was limp wristing

The Glocks in the show are the 9mm as 9mm blanks are easier to come by. The main side arms are 17s and 19s, Hotch's ankle gun is a 26. Accourding to IMFDB, Rossi's 1911 is a Springfield Professional Model(a tricked out TRP), which would insinuate that he was on the Hostage Rescue Team (HRT).

Emily was gone for a while over in Europe when everyone thought she was dead. Then came back and now they canned her?? Too bad as I liked her role.

Canned or quit. They tried to can her earlier and JJ, too, but they returned. This was stupid, to get rid of the hot babes that many of us watch the show for, to a large degree. If anyone needs cutting, it's that aggressive jerk, Morgan. And I could do wihout the fat blonde computer girl. But never without JJ and Emily.

Emily was replaced by Jeanne Tripplehorn as Agent Blake, if I have the character's name right. If you can't place Tripplehorn, she was the shrink trying to help Michael Douglas's messed up detective in, "Basic Instinct." Good actress, if a little old for this role. Maybe she works for less than Brewster wanted?

- Yes, some 9mm guns are used, primarily privately owned Glock 26s. I know one guy who had broken a bone in his wrist and was issued a Glock 17, so there are some issued 9mms around, but they are unusual.

Are .40 Glocks the norm now? In which models? How have they fared? Are .45's used? Presumably in .45 ACP, not .45 GAP.

-- The issue is either a Glock 22 or 23, it seems to change by new agent class. The last new guy we got had a 23, the guy before him a 22. Glock 21s are the only .45s now authorized (other than SWAT guns and grandfathered 220s, like mine).

What ammo is issued in each caliber?

-- 9mm is a 147 grain Gold Dot, the .40 is a 180 grain Winchester bonded HP, and the .45 is a 230 grain Golden Sabre.

If anyone else watches, "Criminal Minds", speak up, if you are SURE of their guns. But I especially want comment from actual agents.

-- Nobody carries a revolver anymore. If you can't qualify with the issued semi-auto it is adios.

The unit involved is the BAU, who chase serial killers, working as profilers.

-- I've never seen the show, but profilers are office folks who look over other people's reports and offer opinions. They don't ever see an actual bad guy in the wild.

What fics I've read are mainly romances, getting Hotchner together with Emily. This seems to appeal to most readers, who are female. I'd like to write a couple of more realistic stories. I just wish Reid would get a haircut, and relocate his holster.

Yeah, I like the idea of Reid carrying the revolver but I'll bet it hurts to sit down very fast. Oh yeah, that's, (Jeanne Doublehorn), FYI...
Peace,
Gordon

On an episode a few years ago a "paramilitary type" tells Reid "Boy; you look like a tooth pick with eyes. You keep carryin' that gun that way and someone is gonna take it and use it on you."

No way in real life any FBI agent would carry the way Dr. Reid does. TV is TV. At least he doesn't make 100 yard shots on a running perp the way Rico Tubbs did with his Model 36 on Miami Vice!

I always thought Reid was supposed to be an adjunct psych-type - not a 'real' agent. I wondered why he was permitted to carry a gun. The show got a bit too rough for me - and that's saying something. I, too, liked the black haired gal - missed her - thought she died. She came back and then left again, I guess. I like Simon Baker's character, Patrick Jane, in 'The Mentalist'... when the guns come out, he hides! Okay, he did shoot one guy...

In 'Bones', the main character started carrying protection some time back. When FBI Agent Booth asked her once if she had protection, she pulled a 4" S&W .500 Magnum from her purse. Asked where she got it, she replied, "The Mall!". Well, at least it's a revolver. That's a gore-show I can watch.

I'm not fond of either Morgan or Penelope. If running things, I'd have cut Morgan and kept Paget Brewster. Maybe she got ticked off and left. One fan said she read that Brewster wanted to do comedy. I think Mandy Pantinkin said he left because he coudn't handle the show's dark themes. I was just glad to see him go. I like Joe Mantegna much better. And I read that he likes guns, although he has to be careful about saying so in Hollywood. I think his character is one of the most realistic on the show. I do doubt that he could also be a retired USMC Sgt. Major, though. He's supposed to have a doctorate, like Reid, and writes books about profiling.

I wonder if Mantegna chose to carry that .45 auto. Like Selleck, it might be a personal favorite. Even as Magnum, Selleck wore a .45 auto, not a Magnum revolver. He definitely likes guns, and is one of the few actors secure enough to admit it.
