Default "Plum" colored blue finish

The 32-20 I recently purchased has been refinished and the cylinder has a "plum" hue to it. What causes this.

You know, I believe it's the carbon and other alloy content in the steel used,
the heat treating/tempering processes as well as the temperature of the bluing salts that cause that sometimes.
Whew...That's a long sentence!

I've saw this happen pretty often with cylinders.....End up just re-running them back through the tanks.

Other times, I think it is directly related to the length of time or lack there of in the pickling solution....

Su Amigo,
Dave

Most of the early 3 screw .44 Mag. Super Blackhawks developed plumb colored loading gates. Back then, it was attributed to improper temp control during heat treat and/or bluing. I delieve the problem was rectified in the later 3 screws.

I've seen that a lot over the years, sometimes on new guns but more often on refinshed ones. I've also heard all kinds of reasons but believe that it's mainly a combination of the steel and bluing temp resulting in this color.

I have two milsurp rifles that exhibit this feature. Adds a bit of character and in no way damages the functionality.

Too bad the whole gun isn't the same. I find it rather attractive.

Wink

This is seen quite often on Model 28s and various parts on blue Ruger revolvers.

Yup, as long as the mechanics of the gun check out. Plum color is just that, color. The blueing has nothing to do with the strength or operation of the gun, it's just a method of protecting the steel by a contolled pre-rusting.

Nice gun!
