It was on today and I watched it on and off throught out the day. I still like the original but didn't care to much for all those that followed.

One of my favorites. I also enjoyed the Tom Selleck westerns.

I read it then quickly saw the movie. Always a big mistake. The movie rarely does the book justice, unless it's Elmore Leonard, but he basically writes movies.

I did the same thing and I wasn't impressed with LD when I first saw it. After watching it a few times it is one of my favorites and I'm glad this thread was started cause I'd forgot about it being on today. Ol Jake Spoon did die good.

The original Lonesome Dove is probably my all-time favorite. So many great characters, great acting and memorable lines.

My favorite sequel was the one with James Garner.

Lonesome Dove is one of my favorites, too. And the Tom Selleck westerns are great. The Sacketts from Louis LaMoure are a step back in tme.

Lonesome Dove is one of my top westerns and its the reason for my avitar. Best line in the movie when Gus was dying and says to Call. "Hell of a party wasn't it Woodrow?"
Robert Duval has been one of my favorites for awhile and I've always thought that he and Tommy Lee Jones were especially good in that movie.

Endeavor to persevere

Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall are two very good actors, and I really enjoyed them in the movie. Conversely, I didn't care for the book.

Robert Duvall was originally cast as Woodrow Call. Did you ever notice how little shooting Tommy Lee Jones does in the movie? I don't think he pulls his pistol until the end when he scares vultures off Gus' body on the trip home. And I think he only shot his rifle when the indian killed Danny Glover but I could be wrong about that. Yet Robert Duvall got in many shootouts.
I actually like Tommy Lee Jones best. He restrained himself but when he got mad, look out! Like that scene where he tore up that scout for whippin' his "son". He cared not about fair play or anything. Just kill the guy at all costs. That guy lost the right for any considerations, he figured. Then he calms down again and says, "Ah hite rude behavior ina man. Won't tolerate it." A slight understatement I think.
John Voight looked and acted great in that sequel, but it was pretty lame. It seemed to want to cater to modern sensibilities of diversity. Something I noticed but can't explain. And whenever Gus' half mexican daughter entered the scene you heard that cliche strumming of a guitar in the background just to remind us she is latino.

"I god Woodrow, It's been quite a party".

I was in a bad mood two days after that line was spoken.

The sequels were just bone pickin money grabbers.
The first novel and film were truely classics that will last a century.

Duvall is a great cowboy actor. One of the best.

I really like the TV movie "Broken Trail". Reminded me a lot of "Lonesome Dove".

Tony Eper was the stunt man that played the part of the scout. He was a long time friend to me. He just died after a long illnes. He was a great stunt man who doulbed for many A actor including John Wayne many times.Tony married a life long friend of mine's sister named Dona Taylor. they lived in Salmon Idaho summer and Dolan Springs Arz. winter months He will be missed by many actors who he took the falls for.I will truly miss him also. Robert Duvall plays cowboys better than just about any other roll he does. What I loved about his character in Lonesome Dove was something he brings to most of those types he plays - he went out on his own terms. We're all dead men eventually. Many times how we choose to go out defines the kind of men we were to great extent.

Gus decided the life he loved and the way he had lived was never to be again if he lost his legs and determined that he would be satisfied with what he'd had to that point.

My mother-in-law took that road. When it became apparent the third cancer was going to win, she didn't opt for any and all measures to prolong things a few weeks or a couple of months. Shot full of steroids there were two normal and happy weeks - and then the end came quickly. Always admired her for that.

Yep, I have to agree here, one of my all time if not THE all time favorite movie!

The original is also one of my faves. I must say those old boys were not that good at cross country navigation. They thought they were in Montana when they were actually in Black Lake, NM.

I didn't watch Lonesome Dove when it first came out on TV, because I read some lamebrained review that said it was a stinker. I hope they fired that critic, because LD became widely known as one of the best Westerns of all time.

I had to buy the DVD to watch it later, and really enjoyed it. Duvall and Jones made a fantastic duo.

I assume most know that this movie was based on real caractors and real events. For those that dont know, Gus's caractor was based on a real life cowboy named Oliver Loving. He was killed near Loving, New Mexico, which is named after him. The captain was a very famous historical caractor named Charles Goodnight. What an interesting life he led. He almost single handedly saved the remaining buffalo and "rescued" Cythia Ann Parker. Well worth further research.
