Default Book recommendation: The Admirals

I just finished reading "The Admirals - Nimitz, Halsey, Leahy, and King - The Five Star Admirals Who Won the War at Sea" by Walter Borneman. I thought it was a great read and though I have long enjoyed studying about the Pacific Theator of Operations in WWII, I learned several new things from this book.

One thing, I didn't realize the influence that Admiral Leahy had with FDR. Secondly, though I knew that Halsey took some grief for blundering the 3rd Fleet through two typhoons, the the after action report and behind the scenes communique between Nimitz and King nearly put Halsey on the beach. Surprisingly, it was MacArthur who came to Halsey's aid and stood behind who he called "the fightenist Admiral ever to command a fleet."

It's a good read and I highly recommend it.

You might like "Aircraft Carriers at War" by Adm. James Holloway. He was Captain of the Enterprise when I went aboard in November 1968. There's a whole chapter on the Enterprise, which has entered the yard at Norfolk, Va to be decommissioned and scrapped.

Default the admirals

In middle of it now. Very well researched. I did not realize the age of the group at the start of WWII.

I'll look into the book thanks.

Eons ago as a kid in the 50's I watched channel 9 "World at War" over and over. Every winter while its cold and snowing, what ever bad weather we get I watch all the dvd's about WW2's history and live video's plus i watch the war movies too. Right now I getting ready to watch the dvd's on our navy's battles marked down at walmart my wife got last year marked down. I also watch clint eastwood, charlie bronson, lee marvin and what ever good movie and actor that i have in my small libruary of dvd's and vhs video's. I also have the gunsmith dvd's and vhs's too so i can learn from too. This keeps me being tired busy all winter once hunting season is over. There is a lot of knowledge out there about the war yet to learn. The war wasn't all Patton and The band of Brothers there is a lot more to ww2.

I have the band of brothers (japan/ south pacific) but i haven't watched it yet. My point is i hope they do a band of brother seamen about the navy too before all these guys are gone.
