Default Jeeps

The past several days I've been looking (ebay, craigslist, autotrader) for a Jeep CJ 7 or a Wrangler 1985 -2000.Good Lord! $6000-$30000 for ones with anywhere from 90000 to 170000 miles on them.I now wish I had kept my '79 CJ5.

Jeeps ain't never been cheap.

Back in 1992 or so, I bought a '73 Commando from my dad for $650. 258 straight six, hooked to a TurboHydramatic 400 tranny. I never worried about stressing the transmission!

Drove it for a couple of years and then sold it. Shouldda kept that one too.

Those sound more like 2000-2012 prices. Heck, my brand-new 2012 JK Sport was only $24k list. $6k should get you a really nice mid 90's YJ or a decent late 90's TJ. $30k will come close to getting you a new Rubicon!

The new UTVs (side by side ATVs) are almost as much as a new jeep now! Where do we draw the line?

I loved my jeep. 83 CJ7 It came with a weak 4 cyl. put a Chevy 305 in it until it quit then a 350 went in. Great fun until I got tired of working on it.

I proposed to Mrs. Roundgunner in that Jeep. Glad I still have her, Wish I still had the jeep but I do have lots of pictures.

Ever consider a Cherokee? Not the Grand Cherokee, but the smaller square one.
They will go about anywhere a CJ or Wrangler will go, and with a small lift kit and some other minor mods can be quite good off-road. The bonus is a better ride driving to and from your off-road activities.
Cherokees sell for about half of what a Wrangler sells for. From some extensive reading, I learned that the 97/98/99 models are the best suited to off road use and modification, IMO.
NAXJA.org is the largest source of information on Cherokees on the web, and Cherokeeforum.com is pretty good as well.

Hi, Steve here. I have allways had 4X4 F150s. My older brother gave me the deal of the century, on a 04 Grand Cherokee. I am impressed.4X4, A/C , Added a hitch cargo rack , 3 more MPG. I would recomend them. My other older brother has allways had Jeep Wranglers .

New JKs (Wranglers) top out now about $44,000. I've had jeeps continually since 1977, usually 2 at the same time. I just saw on the news the other night that the best resale value cars are the Wranglers, right up there with the honda's and toyota's. Ever wonder why that is? Another factor is the foreign metal is always near the most dependable, and the Jeeps are near the bottom of that list. Its because the Jeeps are so much fun and worth working on all the time. If anyone with a jap car had to work on it, they'd sell it and never look back. Jeep owners love their rides even more as they work on them. Ever wonder why?

Being an ex amc/jeep mechanic from the early 70's I never owned one till i got a used 80's cj7 with 125k miles on the 304v8 with 427gears, posi f&r with the granny 4 speed. I installed the gears and posi units from a '73 CJ5 with a 304 v8. I saved the frame and glad i did.

I sold the 80 CJ7 stupid me. I went out looking for a snowblower about the early 90's and i found a 55 cj5 with a running frame with a seat and a 4 way plow for $400. I still have it today. The frame was rusted so we took the 73 frame and boxed it with 3/8" plate. I installed two loc rites in the 5:38 geared diff's. Right now i have a eculid mini rock dump body to finish up and i'm going to put a set of 4 13.6 x 16 turf tires with swedish skidder chains next. This old jeep sits all summer and starts up every winter to plow snow. I even plow dirt with it too. The old 4 cylinder f head is awesome. Its a lot more fun than a snowblower.

My one Jeep cost us $1000 MORE in repairs for the one year we had it than the payments for that year totaled.
No thanks

Still have my '78 CJ-7 bought new. Of course it has "morphed" into something beyond what the factory put out. Blown 258 inline 6, Clifford headers and intake, Holley 390 carb, BW T18 four speed, Detroit Locker rear, Tru trac front posi, 4.56:1 final drive, with 2" Rancho suspension lift and 33x10 BFG Mud Terrains. It won't go over 55, but will literally climb a brick wall. Love that machine.

Yes, Jeeps do tend to "morph" as they grow older. Had my '97 TJ since new. The body tub is still stock. It's grown from a 6 cyl, 3 spd auto on 28" tires to a Hemi, 5 spd auto on 34" tires. It's stronger than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet, able to climb tall buildings in a single bound, its . . . its. . .

just plain fun!

Certain vehicles hold their value like crazy, and I'd buy new before used. Jeeps, Large SUVs, 4 door pick-up, and VW beetles, all hold their value ridiculously. Why do they hold their value so well? you aren't the only one looking for a used one.

Now a mini-van....There is something I'll only plan on ever buying used.
lets compare the 2 family vehicles. an 05 Avalanche and an 03 Venture. Both cost about the same when new (got a good deal on the Avalanche and the Venture is not the base model). The Avalanche still books at well over half its new price at $15k, while the Venture I purchased this Autumn for less than $3k.

Reading these posts makes me wish I'd have won the lotto. All I could afford was a '48 CJ2A with a half cab.

We had a half-cab '47 CJ2 for years before it was stolen out of our front yard in the mid 70s. I bought my '95 YJ with 98k miles on it for $5000 in 2004, drove it for 7 years and sold it in 2011 for $3500. Never put a nickel into it except for a new battery & oil changes.

It's a Jeep thing; you wouldn't understand...

I drove a Wrangler every day for 7 years and I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND!

I regretted buying the thing after about the first week...

Just paid my county taxes today and noted that the tax value on my 2008 4 door Wrangler Safari is still $19,000.00 and change.

Love those Jeeps,

[IMG][/IMG]My ex wife still has her 1985 CJ-7 which she bought new in 1986. Last I saw it, she had 33,000 miles on it and still looks new. My ex used to ridicule me for having my 1950 Chevy convertible, yet she still is preserving the old Jeep. If she takes it to the grocery store and the bag boys carry her goods out to the car they always rave over it.

Jeeps are great, my girlfriend has a '00 Grand Cherokee and her dad has a '99 Grand Cherokee. I'd love to get myself a Wrangler, but finding one I can afford and is still in good shape is difficult. Maybe if I spent less on guns I would be able to...

We bought my son an 89 wrangler about a year ago. It had a knock in the engine ( 4.2 ) when we bought it.
Fast forward...blown engine.
To date we have rebuilt the engine, new radiator and related cooling system parts, fuel pump, and a new top ( only came with bikini top ).

All total including purchase price we have less than $5000 in it.

It's not the best cosmetically, but he loves it.

I have only owned a few over the years so I have a question. Does the name Jeep actually stand for "Just Empty Every Pocket"?

Typically any used Jeep thats at least 10yrs old is gonna need some money put in it soon, if it already hasn't been done. Besides, spending on guns is more fun anyway.
