Back in 1996 I paid $105 for used a first run Marlin 880 SQ "Squirrel Rifle". They were selling for around $200 new. It is still the most accurate .22 rifle in my collection-beating out a CZ, Remington, Winchester, Browning and others.

The least for a handgun was $150 for my H&R R92 I recently posted in the "Any Love for Harrington & Richardson" thread.

$32 for a 1976 pre warning Ruger 10-22 about a year ago.
The fellow lost the bolt/recoil spring and just gave it to me.
So the actual cost was what I paid for replacement parts.

I've had a Raven, don't remember what I paid for it, but it wasn't much. Cheapest gun I have now is an old 16 ga. single shot "Shapleigh's King Nitro" (Shapleigh's was a hardware store in St. Louis that apparently went out of business in the 30's). Perfect bore, locks up TIGHT. The barrel opening latch spring is cracked, but still functional. Need to make a new one, simple leaf. Paid $60. I'm gonna guess it's in the 1890-1910 period, more or less. Back when cheap guns were still fairly well made.

The gun is actually better than the pictures. I believe it would fire, although the cracked cylinder would be dangerous to shoot.

I once paid $1 (one dollar) for a Stevens Buckhorn rifle missing the extractor. (it would fire).

Years ago, my grandfather brought home a Clerke .22 that he paid $20 for at a flea market. I declined to fire it!

$25.00 in 1978 for a Colt .22 automatic (pre-woodsman) 6 inch barrel with no finish or grips with a 4 digit serial number with matching serial numbered magazine that dated it to 1915. I was later given a set of mismatched grips and an extra magazine. With standard velocity long rifles I can do a 3-4 inch group at 25 yards from a rest but it has tiny sights and I have glasses.

I got you all beat. Minus $29.95!
I had a nickel 27-2 5" with a few minor issues that I had $350 in it that I used as trade bait at a gunshow. Dealer offered to trade me for a mint 28 no dash with faux ivory grips, pay the taxes, call-in and fees and throw in a box of Cor-Bon .357 Mag worth $29.95. In the parking lot I pulled the grips off the 28 and they were real ivory magnas in perfect condition. Sold the magnas to a fellow forum member here for $350.
So, I end up with a free gun and a box of Cor-Bons worth $29.95.

Back in the mid-90s I bought a RG-22 from a co-worker for $10. Two weeks later I took it to one of those gun buy back events and traded it for $75 worth of grocery and gas certificates. $65 pure profit.

Back on the late 80's, a pair of Ruger SS 357's with 2.75" barrels for 10bux each.
Lightly used from a security firm that didn't want the in between Rugers any longer. I new the gun custodian.
They wanted 4" for the guards and true snubbies for the managers.

Than 65 bux for a Jennings 22 , NIB.
It recently flew apart at the range, had to track down a couple of parts to get it functioning again. Cost me 30 bux by the time I was done.. not sure it was worth it.

After that , IIRC 50 or 100bux for a S&WK19 4" combat master piece P&R, back in the early 90's. Well worn, spent time with two different LEO's. but was still a good shooter, after 5 years started having problems with it and sent it to S&W for restoration. Well worth it in the end.. 300 or 350 dollars total into it. but lost the R cyclinder in the resto...I have it (S&W gave me back all my original parts they replaced), but it's not safe to use on the it.

I paid 40 for a 1st Model 32 Safety Hammerless.

I’d always thought that was it. But it could be this multi-gun deal I made, one time. A friend called, in a money tight. Needed 500 dollars. For that five hundred I got:

Winchester 290 22 automatic rifle, which I later sold for a hundred bucks
CVA 50 caliber inline muzzleloader, which I later sold for 90 bucks
Mossberg 500 20 gauge pump shotgun, which I later sold for 100 bucks
Yugoslavian SKS, which I later sold for 300 bucks
Uberti 1866 Winchester 44/40, “Red Cloud Commemorative”, which I traded for a S&W Model 21, that the owner had placed a price of 650 dollars on.
Winchester 94 30/30, 70s vintage, which I still have
Romanian “training rifle”. 22 LR bolt action, which I still have
H&R Model 48 Topper, 16 gauge single-shot shotgun, which I still have
Charter Arms Undercover, 2” 38 special 5-shot revolver, which I still have

He also had a Ballester Molina Argentine 45 ACP automatic pistol. He wanted to keep the Ballester. He offered me all the other guns for 500. I told him I didn’t really want them, but did want the Ballester, and he’d have to make it part of the deal. That’s when the price went up to seven, so the Ballester itself cost me 200. But, considering what I got for the ones I sold, I have 110 dollars in six guns. Then, adding in the value of the Uberti trade (650 dollars), less actual money spent (28 to ship rifle, 20 to receive pistol, call it 50 total) that’s 390 profit. If I wanted to I’m sure I could sell the Winchester, quickly, for 200. The 22 is worth about a hundred and a half, the H&R is worth around 90. The Charter is broken, but maybe one day they will have a “gun buy-back”, and I can sell it to the cops. Any way you look at it, the Ballester ended up costing me nothing. I still have it.

Somewhere around 2002, I bought 5 Mosin M44 carbines from Century for $250 for the lot. Best deal I ever made. 2 were Polish, 2 were Hungarian, and 1 was an absolutely mint Romanian. No real bargains other than that, but I have been given a few, including an 1898 Krag and a 1917 S&W.

I am not looking for bargains. I am looking for cheap! I have many stories of bargains.

How about this for bargain and cheap? I bought a 1903 Springfield at a yard sale for $40. It was in a classic sporter stock and had a Lyman 48 peep sight. I believe it was never a military gun, I believe it was an NRA sporter. It was made circa 1927. It had an ebony forend cap and grip cap. It had an awful varnish job which explains the price. It had the star gauged barrel.

I was given a Jennings 9mm (non functional... of course), and an Iver Johnson break top .32 that would be nice, except the frame is cracked. Now, if someone would give me a boat, I could use the Jennings as an anchor...

I paid $19 for a new Bronco single-shot .410 back in the day.
Had seen them in the gun mags and said, "I'm buying the first one I see."

Walked in the local hardware store about a month later and there was one on the shelf.

Still have it and shoot it from time to time.

Any number of $10-$20 guns if I go back far enough......
The most recent was a $0 Colt M1903 in about 90% condition.
It was given to me by a co-worker and he refused to let me pay anything for it. (It came from his Mother-in-Laws estate and he didn't want his brother-in-law to get it. He also didn't want it in his house.....)

In 1968 I bought a brand new Colt Cobra, my first off-duty gun, for $85. I still have it, carry it from time to time and use it for LEOSA qualification.

I've had a couple of guns given to me. Free/gratis. They were pretty nice guns and one not so nice. That last one was a Jennings and I kept it moving along to someone else. And I've given guns away that I'd paid good money for. One of which I was just reminded of last week. It too was a Jennings 22, but a mag. Some guns just keep gaining velocity as they're passed along.

Only one was really high quality and I'm not sure the deal was legal. In fact, I'm pretty darn sure it wasn't, but you'll need to beat the information out of me. I'm not squealing on the giver who's a good guy, and I really like the gun. I guess I just run in different circles from others here. I don't consider a gun to be that holy that I need to make a profit on each one I dump. If it goes to a good home, I'm OK with it.

I also live in a state with few gun laws. Other folks are saddled with all kinds of reporting and licensing.

One won a rare Finnish Mosin Nagant M28 for an $85 bid at an online estate auction. Didn't hurt that everything foreign in a wood stock with a bolt was listed as a Mauser. Somebody else got a mint Japanese Type I for $95 as I recall because I forgot to go back and bid live. Shipping etc. bumped up the final cost somewhat.

NAA .22 LR, free. Mainspring was broken so I guess whatever I paid for the spring (installed it myself) would be the price of the gun. I also have a nickel Colt PP with all parts and a slight bulge in the barrel, in a coffee can. Some day I'll get around to putting it together. It was free also.

Early 60s I gave $7. for a .32 owl head. It worked and shot good. I can't remember what I sold it for. Middle 60s I gave $15. for a .32 Colt auto that had a rough cold blueing job done on it but it worked and shot good. Sold it for $17.50. Wish I had it back. Larry

I was given a few nice guns back in the late fifties and sixties by neighbors that knew I liked guns. Two that I paid for in the seventies were an Ithaca Govt. .45 and a Springfield 03-A3. They were $10 each from different people.

A couple come to mind.....
A nearly new S&W M25-5 4" .45 Colt was obtained by trading a co-worker a ratty old Ruger 10/22 I paid $40 for. He was delighted - the revolver was 'too expensive to shoot'. I even threw in a brick of .22's.

A friend was disgusted after completely disassembling his Beretta M21 Tomcat .22 and couldn't reassemble it, since he lost a few minor parts. Gave it to me in a bag.
I sent it to Beretta, small bill and perfectly functioning little .22.

All of my guns have been gifts from a friend. Does that count?

Around 1957, $5 for a single barrel shotgun, so I could cut it off to a bit over 18". The best deal, about 1951, when I was 12, was $12 total for my 'sporterized' 1878 marked Springfield 45-70 [$12 less $5 credit for an old given-to-me damascus loosey-goosey 12 ga].

Thanks for sharing your stories.

Regards,

Dyson

In the late 70's or early 80's my father and I went to the yearly auction at Frankfort, KY where the state auctioned off all types of surplus and confiscated stuff. Guns were allways last.

I bid $20 on a CZ 57, another guy bid $25 and I bid $30.......and that was it. Guy wanted to buy it as we were leaving, but I said no.

Took it home, took it apart, cleaned it up, put it back together. No nicks, cuts, scrapes and bore was perfect. Not sure if it had ever been fired, and I have not shot it. Still have it today.

Lots of 'cheap' deals if you go back some years,,but I'd guess you'd have to apply that inflation guestimator thing to figure out what the real cost was in todays money.
Stuff like a 1911 Colt (made in 1918) with the belt, holster, mag pouch, 3 orig mags and approx 200 rds of WW1 & WW2 ammo sounds like a killer deal at $60.00. But the pistols alone were a $50.00 item when I bought that one.
A 95% Luger BYF41 all matching w/ holster and mag tool for $100,,again about market price at the time.

I did buy a Box-o-Gun last year. A Webley MkIV WW2 'War Finish' 38-200. All in parts, everything was there he said. The owner was frustrated as it wouldn't go together and function correctly he said. Something wrong with the trigger was his final opinion. I bought that for $20 'as is' for the parts.
It went together OK.
Needed a few screw slots fixed up from the gunsmith attempts and the cylinder bolt needed some work,, but other than that, it ended up a pretty clean 75% revolver w/an excellent bore.

I remember it like it was yesterday. In the US Air Force in upper Michigan 1961 I was offered a Manlicher Cacarno in 7.35mm with lots of military ammo for the high price of $10. Sold it ten years later for $25. Thought I hit the lottery since the gun was not well cared for.

Also bought a Ruger single six 22 cal for $49 the same year. Still have that little pistol, its a keeper.

$44.00 for a Heritage Rough Rider in .22 and 22 mag cyl. Also had 50 rounds of 22 mag thrown in with it. I couldn't hit a half lame chipmunk at 3 feet with 4 shots. Took five shots. Made me thankful for my other guns because this one is a door stop.

My Raven Arms MP-25 police trade-in. It looks horrible, but wow, someone forgot to tell it that it was supposed to be innaccurate and wasn't supposed to cycle back at the factory! Thing is a tack driver and I've never had one FTF or FTE with it!

I have bought several 10 to 20 dollar guns that either were broken or just so dirty that they wouldn't work and had a few just given to me. Some I had to spend money for parts, some just needed a good cleaning.(did you know that too much oil can turn to varnish over time and literally glue a gun into a solid mass?).

Years ago you could buy a lot of good, working guns for 25 or less at sales, auctions etc. That is a thing of the past and if you figured inflation they may not have been as good a deal as they seem in memory either. My wages were a lot lower back in the 70's & 80's! Most good deals I find now are going to be non-working ones though I have gotten a couple from people who just wanted to get rid of them. Some people end up with a gun they just don't want and I have had folks send them to me cause they know I like guns. A couple times I saved a nice old gun from going to a buy-back or just being dropped off to the police to get rid of it.

I was at a North-South Skirmish and I saw the action of a double barrel shotgun sticking out of a barrel. It had a $2 (yes, TWO DOLLARS) price tag on it. It had the complete action, barrels, and forend. It was a Cresent Arms. I bought it (I think I was 16 at the time).

I glued two pine boards together and roughly carved a buttstock. The first time I fired it, it doubled! Hurt like heck! I later disabled the lock with the sears that wouldn't hold.

I later gave it to a friend who needed parts for a shotgun that his daddy owned.
