If you were a gunfighter in a world without the law...

Old school. I'd like an '06 bolt (or maybe a 270) with a 3x9 scope and a ruger Blackhawk in 45/45 acp. I have the Blackhawk but my 30-06 are a Garand, Enfield, or Springfield. 30-40 for my Krag is too hard to find, so I guess I'd opt for my 300 mag with 3x9.

Otherwise, 1917 Smith and my Enfield. Both are pretty indestructible.

Marlin 1894 in 357 and S&W 686 plus

Always thought a .357 levergun would have been the perfect companion back when police officers carried .357 wheelguns. A headshot with one would have made short work outta those body-armor wearing bank robbers in LA.

If law enforcement ever breaks down, I predict a dramatic rise in vigilance committees. In the 1800's in Montana the leader of the gang of road agents was Henry Plummer the local sheriff. He was strung up along with one of his gang (one or two, I forget). The others were warned "Get out or get what Henry got". They all did.

I am slightly confused, I dont think we need deer or bear rifles for going into a collapsed Detroit type situation.

I would guess an MP5 suppressed on a single point sling for the close in work. Then perhaps a M4 with an Acog, carry all the 30 round mags you can. Then maybe five of your friends equally equipped and well trained...

Also it would be much better to not be old, out of shape and fat, ok I am out ;)

Scarce stores that might have ammo for sale ? What are the chances of the stores having the caliber ammo you need ?
I recall the beginning of the year 2008--the only handgun ammo on Wal-Mart ammo counter was .357 Sig !

A Winchester '66 and a Schofield.

Ammo would be a criteria.
If I had a .357 Blackhawk, for some
weird reason, I wouldn't have any bullets,
since it wasn't yet invented. :):)

I would be comfortable with an 1873 Winchester in .45 Colt and a Peacemaker or Schofield in the same caliber.

I like the two guns, one caliber concept, but I just don't think it would cover all my needs, in this scenario.

I want my long gun to be able to reach out an touch my advisory beyond the distance he can touch me so I would go with my M1A National Match. I think the .308 can handle most hunting needs in CONUS. I have enough ammo to last a while.

As for my handgun, I want to lean towards a 22 (like Mod 622 or 34), but my choice is my Mod 686 4 inch, because I can shoot low power 38 specials for small game and 357s for everything else. Plus, I reload that caliber and have plenty of primers, powder and lead.

I think some are forgetting the part about all ammo being man or beast portable. That is why my first rifle choice was 22 mag. I've carried 200 rounds of 22 Mag and I've carried 200 rounds of 30-06. :-D

Modern guns,

336 Marlin in 30 30, or 1894 in 44 mag. Handgun, 44 Mag 4". The rifle would depend on the type of terrain.

Well if there are very few gun stores or other places to buy ammo. I guess I'd go with my .44 Remington Army (replica) and 12ga. Navy Arms SXS.

What would I do when I ran out of BP/Pyrodex and caps? Oops, I don't know. Learn how to make a bow right quick I guess.

The same as jimmyj and mc5aw:

My old 870 12-gauge with rifle sights, and one of my 3" Model 65s (probably the Ladysmith).

But like Hillbilly 77, I'd probably have been killed off pretty quickly in that environment.

No doubt my CZ Brno 12ga. over .30-06 (it was an impulse buy but, boy it makes me giggle like a school girl when I take her out for a spin) and my SP-101 4.2" .357. That aught to cover the bases.

I find it hard to imagine that with no motor vehicle I would want to be toting a long arm, but I suppose a horse might make it reasonable. If there was any chance that distance might be important, I guess I would take my FN LAR and a bunch of the aluminum mags. Also a tiny kit of spare parts. My sidearm would be my stainless Gov't Model with a bunch of mags and a few spare parts. I would undoubtedly have a bobbed Model 37 or some such in a pocket, and maybe even a whole Lightweight Commander. I know you said only two guns, but how are you going to stop me from carrying more? I'm not even sure I want to carry the rifle.

Hmmmmm.......
So, I'm either Infantry or cavalry.
Think I'd rather be cavalry. I've been Infantry. They walk too much. :D

Interesting so many like a shotgun.
I'd feel severely undergunned with that as my only long gun. What if I'm facing a good rifleman under cover or concealment? How many 12 ga slugs are you gonna hump? A rifle will cover shotgun ranges. A shotgun will not cover rifle ranges.
Given a choice of engaging at 30 yards or 150, I'll take 150. He might not be as good as me. If he's as good as me and saw me first, he'll probably own my gear and I won't be worrying about it. ;)
I'd rather have a 22 rifle rather than a shotgun if those were my only choices. I grew up a rifleman.

So.........
If mounted, a 308. A bolt or an FAL would work. A 30-30 would work. Any HV centerfire down to 223 would work, but the most common calibers would be better, so I'd stick to 223, 243, 30-30, or 308. If the horse blows and I have an FAL or AR, I take two mags and loose ammo. If you walk into something two mags won't handle in the short term, save the 40th round for yourself. :D
And yes, I only do 20 rd mags.
No 30's.
Too long.
Keep me too far off the ground.
Speaking from experience, belt buckles and trouser buttons are too thick, and keep me too far off the ground. ;)

If walking, an AR-15 or 30-30 or light bolt gun at 308 or less and a 4'' K frame 357. A 9mm would work. My Sig 220(45) would work.

Guys , several have mentioned guns that require "heavy wt" ammo. Remember, you are afoot or perhaps on horse back. While not my first choice for a rifle fight, I would still choose an AR-15 rifle with 250 to 300 rds. in mags. In my youth ,I could and did load out with 500 to 700 rds. for a long "walk in the woods" but that was then and not now. I would like a handgun but truth be told I would probably be better armed with more 5.56 magged up and maybe , just maybe, a couple of grenades instead of a sidearm. If I have to select an all purpse handgun, the choice for me is a .357 pre-lock 7shot Mt. Gun and 40 or 50 rds. of 357 125gr HP . It still is a fairly "heavy" load. I am reminded of stories about the fighting behind the lines in the Phillipines when soldiers fighting the Japs asked for some 12 ga. oobk and were told that for the same size and wt of a 1000rds of 12 ga. they could have 10,000. rds of 30 Carbine. The choice was simple. Remember you have got to carry it. All you former Infantry types think back .

I'd feel severely undergunned with that as my only long gun. What if I'm facing a good rifleman under cover or concealment? How many 12 ga slugs are you gonna hump?

Moot question. If he's a good rifleman under cover or concealment, you're not going to have a chance to shoot a shotgun OR rifle.

My 1974 Auto Ordnance Thompson semi-auto with 50 round drum, it's a pistol caliber. Rem 700 heavy match barrel 308 Win with 8 - 25 X Leupold scope. Herd control or distant irratants.
