I will have to check the lot number on my Remington ammo I have several hundred rounds of this particular load. I noticed that the ones I fired in my 686 had quite a bit of recoil and muzzle blast. About 10 years ago, I bought a similar box of Remington ammo from the local Ace Hardware. I loaded a cylinder fulll in my airweight J frame, but when I started to close the cylinder, I noticed the markings on the rim said RP 357 magnum. I unloaded the J frame and loaded them in my Ruger Blackhawk. They were indeed magnum loads in 38 cases. I guess all ammo manufacturers can make a mistake every now and then.

Seems like the last few years there have been lots of manufacturers recalls.

Reloading looks better and better all the time. As least I know who to blame if I screw up.

BTW, how do you fit a 357 magnum is a 38 special cylinder?

Figuring that's *in a 38 special cylinder*
It's easy - They're the same size - Well, except for the length
You'll probably have trouble closing the cylinder though. A vice or a solid object and a hammer (or even a rock) will usually get it closed.
The cylinder won't rotate after the first shot, but that most likely won't be one of your big concerns at that point.

Have fun

Beemer-Mark. The ammo in question was Remington 125 grain +P factory JHP. The 50 round box was labeled 125 JHP +P 38 S&W Special. Even though the cartridges were head stamped 357 Magnum, they were in fact in 38 Special length cases which is approximately 1/8 inch shorter than 357 magnum length cases.

That is truly frightening. I have less respect for Remington all the time.

BTW, the old Colts for .38 Long Colt (Spanish - American War vintage) will reportedly accept .357 ammo. No shoulder in the chambers. Firing it would be a disaster!

Well I checked it. Used a round of Federal 125 gr JHP 357 Magnum.

My S&W 638 woundn't chamber the round by about 1/10 inch. There's a shoulder in the cylinder that prevents this.

My Colt 1903 revolver in 38 Long Colt would accept the Federal round. However a handload using a 158 gr bullet wouldn't work: the bullet projcted out the front of the cylinder enough the cylinder wouldn't close.
