Buyer backed out of a deal, due to the serial number

I listed my Colt Police Positive Special .32 NP on a local board for sale or trade and got several offers on it. One fellow pestered me to death, as I could not meet with him until today. I was going to swap for a tapered 4" barrel, SB, S&W 64. The S&W was in VGC and the man was pleased with my 62 year old Colt, until he noticed the serial number. The last three digits of the Colt serial number are "666", and that was a deal breaker for this good, Christian man. He truly acted offended and insulted. After driving up from Macon, nearly one hundred miles, he left without the gun.

I hope God forgives him for missing church this morning.

My father was issued a license plate that ended in 666. He returned it to DMV and asked for a replacement. They gave him one that started with XXX. He was happy.

Sounds like a Christian with a superficial knowledge of the bible. The "mark of the beast" is a number with three rows of six digits each, hence "666". The actual number is not 666.

Some would not use that number no matter the reason. cost, etc Some take the mark of the beast very seriously.......Years ago in the 60's CPD just skiped over that number. At the time I had not heard about that number so I asked....Back then it wasn't a secrete except to me......I never forgot it again.....Some hotels skip the room number in the bible belt,,,,

My wife always writes a check for $667s. I have seen hotels with no 13th floor listed. While I would never mess with the #666, many times I have used the #13 on certain things as my way of spitting in the eye of stupid supersticion.

I tell him he owes me me some money for my gas and time his foolish superstitions have cost me! He asked nothing about the serial numbers before agreeing to the transaction and nothing was not as promised. He backed out of a verbal contract. You could sue him in small claims court.

forresth; read that again. The potential buyer is the one who drove not the poster seller. I wouldnt have bought the gun either. (mostly because of how my wife feels about it.) My wife will not even say the numbers out loud! When I read this to her she even rebuked me for reading it out loud! Then said a prayer.

A few years back my son was issued a bib number for a high school cross country race. He won the race and the local news rag posted a good-sized color picture of him with "666" blazed across his chest in 5" tall block numbers. It looked like a mug shot from the "Hellsville PD".

I sent the picture to his grandmother in Florida. She spent the afternoon at her church praying and lighting candles for him. It was touch and go for a while if she was going to survive the ordeal.

Makes you question the old theory that "all publicity is good publicity".

I only drove about eight miles, did not even get to ask if he would sell the S&W 64 outright, as he got flustered REAL quick. The 64 was nice, was in the original box but no wrapping paper or paperwork. The stocks were not the PC type.

keith44spl, I will try to take some pics of it and send them to you along with a price or my trade interests. It is too nice for me to tote around in a holster and bugger up. If I keep it, I will use it.

A biker here in Sweden built a Chopper and called it "The Beast"
bought a personal plate with 666, had it for many years.
When he renewed it it was rewoked from TSV (trafic department)

Back in the mid 80's , the state of N. Carolina issued my bride a plate that was "FAT- XXX", She immediately returned it, and had to go to a different DMV office for a different plate...The 1st office only had 900 plates....ALL starting with FAT....I wouldn't have cared, 'cause I am...but she wasn't....Go figure????

The last time I plated my "beast", a 1978 Ford E 250 4x4, they tried to give me a plate ending in 664, I told them to keep digging until they got to the 666 one. And that is still what it is wearing.

I'm afraid I am not the person around which to admit you are superstitious. It brings out the "press to test" little boy in me. I will point at rainbows, open umbrellas indoors and black cats are always crossing my path because they like me. I have even walked under ladders because it was safer than walking into traffic, although I did check that the painter/bricklayers etc had come down.

I suppose I fit that T-shirt slogan you see these days:

One of my grandmothers was very superstitious and I was too young to really understand it so I went along with the program so to speak.

Once I got a few years older and wiser I began to test all those limits and found out the world wasn't going to end over opening an umbrella in the house or some contrived numerology.

I try to be respectful of others beliefs but like LVSteve I like to instigate if the opportunity presents itself...

I fail to see the slightest problem with the guy backing out of the deal. It wasnt you who made a 200 mile round trip. Sure maybe the guy was mad about not finding out about a serial # that he couldnt accept for his belief that wasnt yours. "Oh well" on that score, but havent most of us ever had a blind date and was dissapointed? (With me, more likely they were dissapointed!)
However if I ever end up with the unlikely odds of getting a gun or anything else with that number and want to sell it after reading this, I will be sure to let a interested party know first.

Apparently pointing at rainbows is not a good idea in some parts of England. My Dad came home from work chuckling that a lady he worked with just about had a fit when he said, "Oh look, a rainbow", and pointed. She was stunned that my Dad "didn't know better". When you visit other countries and cultures it is easy to make yourself unpopular by tripping over some superstition about which you know nothing. For example, there is a huge moth that lives in the Caribbean called the Black Witch or Duppy Bat. Down there it is a sign of bad luck or even an impending death if one visits your house. When they get blown up here to the US, it's a case of "Hey, look at the tropical moth that got lost. Neat". Don't say that in the Caribbean. We had one turn up here on Ma-in-law's house. My wife told me under no circumstances to tell Ma about the attached superstitions.

Just goes to show, ask for the serial number before making a commitment to buy. Hope he learned the lesson.

Overall it was no big deal. I would of liked to have had his S&W 64, which he claimed had too much recoil for his arthiritic hands. I just found his attitude to be very odd, and he was not one bit apologetic about it.

That happened to me when we moved to New Mexico in 1984. I went in to register our vehicles and get NM plates, and the first one they handed me had 666 for the numerical portion (I don't remember the alpha characters.) I asked the clerk for another plate, saying I'd be afraid to drive my car to church with that plate, and we both laughed about it.

I can understand that you are disappointed about the trade falling through, but by the same token, the man could have objected to condition or any other factor, and not have bought the gun. It wasn't a done deal until money was exchanged...and you didn't make the trip, he did. I'd just chalk it up to "oh well" and go on.

Oh no, I am fine. He was well pleased with the overall condition of the Colt PPS, with the exception of the serial number. It was also a birth year gun for him, which excited him a tiny bit. I reckon he can keep on looking.

As a Christian, I just shake my head. It's the dude with that number that's the problem, not the number itself.

I do suppose I would not want a tag with "666" on it, but only because of people like him and the near certainty that someone would help themselves to it when I wasn't around.

Anyway, when the guy the Bible talks about with the number does make his appearance and does his thing for a while, I won't be here.

Hmmm....last digits were 666....I just a couple months ago bought a Ruger P89 with those three digits for the end of the serial number.

The Ruger had belonged to a fellow who died of pancreatic cancer...so my 'new' Ruger P89 is literaly 'the dead man's gun'!

Anyhow..despite a dead previous owner and an unfortunate serial number..the Ruger P89 is an excellent shooter...

Back in the early 1980s I had a beautiful Dan Wesson .44 magnum with a serial number of 013666. I ended up selling it but not because of the serial number.
