Default Ammo price gouging

My buddy was at the local Academy store yesterday and passed by the ammo dept. to watch the show. He noticed the operator of a local gun range buying a large quantity of assorted ammo. What caught my attention was the local news story from this shooting range a few hours later where the customer told the reporter that ammo had doubled overnight. Seems the ammo doubled in price in about a 5 mile drive. If this was building supplies during a hurricane it would be price gouging, I guess if it is ammo it's just taking advantage of a bad situation. Just left a bad taste in my mouth-rant over.

Allegedly, the local ranges & Big 5 were the reason pistol ammo was so hard to find at Wally's in '08-'09. They were buying all the WWB, marking it up and selling it. Big 5 had WWB .45ACP for $55/100 in '08.

What is the theory behind hoarding ammo right now? While there is talk of the AWB being reinstated - thus getting EBRs and mags has some logic - no one has said a word about banning or restricting ammo. Then again....better safe than sorry I suppose.

Yes they have. There was a long segment on ABC News last night with doctors talking about how certain types of ammo should be banned. Everything is on the table for antis now.

By the way, there is no such thing as price gouging in a free economy. If the price is too high, don't buy it. Go somewhere else and buy it. They used to call people who bought in quantity and sold for a profit entrepreneurs. Now, they call them gougers. Anyone, including your buddy, was free to buy those "large quantities" of ammo. The guy who bought it is taking a chance. He is taking the risk that ammo will go down in price. He is hoping it will go up and he can sell for a profit. He is also providing a service for the people who use his range. It is The American Way.

If someone wanted to disable every car in the USA within a few weeks how would they do it?

Cut off the fuel supply...

Redlevel-at this time there are 34 states and D.C. that have laws against price gouging certain goods and services during an emergency. Other states will handle it under deceptive and unfair trade practices. Yes my buddy could of bought all the 45 ACP on the shelf but he bought 1box and left the other 5 for 5 more shooters or 1 hoarder. The guy that bought all the ammo was taking little if any chance buying at normal Academy prices (which you can check on their web site ) that is cheaper than his regular price and doubling it to sell to a panicked buyer. In my eyes that is not "The American Way".

Beginning around 10 years ago, after California legislators made a few unsuccessful attempts to past laws calling for a 10 cent per round tax on ammo, including .22 ammo (imagine adding $5.00 to each box .22s), I figured I should stock up. By 2007, I was well on my way to having an excellent supply of factory ammo and reloading supplies for all my firearms. In late 2007, I realized that after Bush 43, the chances were good that we would end up with a president who would not be gun friendly. So, I pushed ahead to acquire more ammo (and some guns, too). By the time of the 2008 election I was ammo independent. At the rate I consume ammo, I'm good for at least the next 20 years. Since I'm 61, that should do it. I even have enough so that if prices really get up there, I could even sell a bit.

The way I see it, the expiration in 2004 of the 1994 AW law, was an anomoly. There will only be more laws, regulations, restrictions and limitations. Good luck to all; may you find the ammo you need at retail (discounts won't come back for awhile).

I would not count that as price gauging. Price gauging is charging a unfair price during a emergency. Regardless of what some people think there is no current emergency when it comes to guns and ammo.

Are business taking advantage yes is it right... Yes and No. Its supply and demand plus who am I to say what they can and cant sell something for? How about the people at the gun shows that have ammo and mags at like a 300% mark up. There current prices would fall in line for what where seeing now. Would you accuse them of price gauging?

One other thing and I am really not trying to be a jerk just give another point of view. No one has forced anyone to buy over priced ammo or mags. There is a issue with the price then just dont buy it move along and boycott them.

Here in Kalifornistan we had a go round with ammo restrictions. They wanted to (among other things) ban internet sales. AB269 (IIRC) got thrown out in the courts at the last minute.

Don't worry. Ammo restrictions are on the list.

X ring!

The Kalifornistan .gov would dearly love to ban all guns but there's that pesky ol' Constitution. Making ammo mega expensive would be a step toward their ultimate goal. They even tried to get the EPA to ban ammo with lead in it. Ever priced copper bullets?

I've actually considered stockpiling a few hunnert pounds of lead for just such a situation

We have already seen most of the stuff the Feds are discussing.

Anyone who has not seen this coming since October has been in denial. It was just a matter of time and opportunity. A more synical person would suggest this may have been the goal when making schools CPZs in the first place. It was certianly NOT to make them safer places.

I never understood why gun ranges don't wholesale ammo. I suppose they don't believe in supporting the shooting sports or know what selling in volume means for their business.

Charging high prices for ammo at gun the range is like selling a man a paddle that is broke down in the middle of the ocean

Once again, call it what you want to me it is a gun person taking advantage of another gun person. I am fully aware of the free market system, supply and demand etc. and that is not my point or complaint. And my memory of this businesses action will last along time and I will tell anyone that will listen about it. Integrity goes a long way in my book.

Chris, not trying to throw gas on the fire here but.... remember that buying / shipping ammo via common carriers was originally illegal after the GCA of 1968. It wasn't until the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986 that this was over turned. I can remember buying my first box of .38 Special ammo in 1972 or so and paying MORE for it then than I would now.

I am sure that interstate / internet sales of ammo must make the social progressives in congress crazy, and I am just as sure that they will try to retake this provision in the current pending legislation.

I would agree, internet ammo sales are surely one of the things the anti's want shut off. Anything they can think of to restrict gun owners rights and increase their own power is on the table now. Expect them to keep the emotional level high so they can browbeat anyone who opposes them with facts or logic. We are in for a rough road.

I try to plan ahead and buy ammo when its on sale. But reloading helps too. When the ammo prices last spiked i poured some extra cash into my relaoding equipment like progressive presses.

Last time around, 2008, I bought components, however I'm still using my old green single stage press. But sure enough, primers went away for quite some time, eventually it came around but the price stayed up. I continued to reload, supplementing when I find the right stuff at the right price. Still I may be shooting more .22s than .38s or .45s. We have weathered storms before and will weather this one as well.

I haven't taken part in this particular scare yet . . . . until today.
I picked up 2000 more small pistol and 2000 more large pistol primers just 'cause. In a worst-case ammo ban scenario, primers are the weak link. Without primers, you are basically back to a flintlock. As I understand it, powder can be manufactured, and projectiles can be scavenged. I will probably pick up a few more pounds of Bullseye and Unique. I took two five gallon buckets of wheel weights to a friend a couple of weeks back. He is going to cast me some .45 Colt, .45 ACP, and some .38/.357 bullets. Of course, I already have a hoard of components and loaded ammo. One can never be sure he has enough, though.

I was just at Wal-Mart and they got a fresh batch of American Eagle .223 in. I bought about 300 rounds. I know it's not a lot but I have over 4,000 brass cases WITH the supplies to reload each case. I've just been busy with Christmas and adding on a room to my house. But WallyWorld is out of .22LR, which is what I really like to shoot.

They also released a statement today not backing down to the idiocy of what's going on, and that they will still sell AR's and ammo for them.

CHECK YOUR WAL-MART!

Since reading a thread by "texasflyboy" about putting 75 thousand rds thru his 27-2 5'' l having been stocking up on the components to dupe his feat. So far l have the raw material for the boolits, but am a bit short on the primers. Just cant swing the 4 grand for the pdr/primers all at once. l have been buying a bit over time tho.

I bought a 38 in 72 for less than the $45 for 50 rds that the store wanted now.

Heard from a little bird that the guy I started this thread about overcharging for ammo got him a new one torn at the airport for a loaded handgun in carry-on luggage. He found something to spend all that extra profit on.
