9mm dilemma
OK. I have a HK P7 in my nightstand. My wife has a Glock 17 & I also have a '40s vintage post war FN HiPower. So, here is the problem.... As I mentioned in another post, there are several S&W 59s on the market right now for < $300. I suspect that they are surplus from a foreign government. I REALLY WANT ONE! But,I need to find a good reason to hit the "buy it now". C'mon. Talk me into it (or talk some sense into me before I make an impulse buy that I don't need).

Why? If they are like the ones I've seen the condition is pretty bad. You want one that bad??

Need and want are two different things buddy. If you want it, buy it. I seem to be in the minority about S&W semi autos round here. I hate em! Clunky, poor trigger, and I loathe the side mounted safety/decocker. $300 plus shipping and transfer fees can buy a lot of ammo!

I long ago gave up attempting to rationalize a need for some new gun I wanted. I don't even try to come up with a "need" for another gun anymore. If I want it, I just want it...ymmv

What he said.
I had a S&W 457 (.45 auto) and I hated it. I felt really lucky to sell it for what I had in it. If you do buy one, plan on getting at least two more mags ASAP.

I once got two beautiful nickel 59s in a trade. I did not like the way they shot and got rid of them. They seemed cheap and poorly made. I do like the 5900 series pistols and own several. I think the best bottom feeders Smith ever made is the M&P series. I own four of those in different calibers.

Hi:
You want it--Buy it !
Reasons:
1. Just because
2. Its an investment
3. You have a holster and need a pistol to fit it
4. You are buying it for your wife where she can have a "S&W".
5. You are buying it to give to your best buddy Jimmy as a late Christmas present
6. When has a guy needed an excuse to buy a S&W
7. You are helping the econamy
8. If you don't own a S&W the guys won't let you hang out with them

I would never buy a used pistol sight unseen, or at least without extensive pictures.
I've owned a couple of 3rd Gen S&W semi's, including a 3913. Frankly, I like my M&Ps more.

Sorry, you don't need a S&W 59.
You need a SIG P226 and a Beretta M9.

For sentimental reasons I've kept a model 39 for years and will continue to do so; I've owned a couple of nice 59's (notice past tense)and since you're asking for opinions and free advice (worth what you're paying) mine would be to take the $300 and add some more good money and buy you a Browning, Beretta, Sig, Glock, or much later iteration S&W. The nostalgia thing is lost on this one as the coolest thing about the model 59 was Paul Michael Glaser carried one in 'Starsky & Hutch' and started the movie/TV spray and pray mentality because it carried the rounds to waste.
In theory ( John Browning's and others) the 59 was a good idea - in execution . . . . not so much. I would have to admit I'd rather have one than a Lorcin or a High Point, but that's damning praise . . . .

Buy one as an experiment. See if you like it. Do a long term analysis of it's ability to feed various kinds of ammunition.

Look at it this way:
Just think of some of the things you've done in your life with $300, and where are they now?
Hope that helps.

I concur with most the opinions on the 59.
Bulky etc...
Maybe that is why they are $300.
Seller can't give em away at shows.
Go with a Browning Hi Power.IMOP

It's simple....See it, want it, buy it. That's the American way.
If you love your country you have to buy it.

I've had a couple 59's, one nickel one blue. I'd much prefer a S&W 3913-14, or a 6906-04. There's DAO versions of these guns also that have the best revolver trigger emulation ever.

I think you need another nine, but I would suggest getting a more modern pistol or a 3rd gen Smith.

I don't know about those guns in particular, but if you want a good reason....just by buying and owning another such weapon of mass destruction you would be flipping off (figuratively) some really irritating people who don't think you are responsible enough to own such a thing. :-)
I just picked up another Hi Power and am thinking of naming it Dianne, but am not sure, because it is so much prettier than its potential namesake.

I owned a P7M8....next to that, a 59 seems like a hi-point. I'd pass on the first gen Smith auto unless it's a 39 with wood grips..

Must be the odd man out here, I have several 59's with thousands of rounds downrange without failure of any kind...If you want it...get one and have fun! Mine are all accurate and reliable.

I just ordered a Kel Tec PMR 30. That should take care of hacking off the gun banning crowd thoroughly!

I had a M-59 in 1975 or so. Came out of the Berkley P.D. Armory, what a disappointment got out from under at in less than a year. My advise find a nice M-39 instead.

If it was me, I would pass on that deal, mostly because for a little more, you should be able to buy either a 6906, or a 5906, both of which are superior the the rather elderly Model 59.
The 6906 makes for an excellent CC weapon, and can do duty as a HD weapon, as well. I am especially fond of the Novak sights, which should be very similar to the sights on your HK P7
The 12 + 1 capacity is certainly a step up from from the P7.
The 5906 is a really nice range pistol: the all stainless steel weight really helps to soak up recoil. It's 15+1 capacity. It's pretty heavy for CC duty, but less than the 1911 some folks carry.
