OK, the DOJ has a form that lets you register a gun for 19 bucks. But to be legal, you are to take a gun with the original owner to a dealer for a PPT...so when are these self register forums legal to use? I would assume that if an elderly housebound neighbor wanted to gift you a gun, and couldn't leave the house, you could use this form? Or if you found one in your attic from years ago. But it doesn't say on the form the circumstances.

Self registration is for those moving into the state as handgun registration is required. If you are gifted a gun from an elderly neighbor it has to be done at an ffl. If you inherit a gun through a family death I believe you can self register that iirc. Any other type of ppt has to be done through an ffl including interfamilair transfers from living persons. If you found a family "heirloom" in the attic I believe you can self register, finding a random gun in the attic of a home you just bought... probably not.

Thanks...but what if, say, an elderly neighbor is in the hospital and can't get to an ffl but wants you to have his gun? I had a friend some years back leave the state and he left a shotgun with me...when he said he wasn't coming back, he told me to keep the gun..so i sent in the form..no problem...

Technically long guns aren't even required to be registered or are registered.... yet.... Come 2014 they will have to be registered in the same fashion as handguns

As for the elderly neighbor, there might by some alternate way, but its not the voluntary registration form. Might want to consult with an FFL on that one.

Voluntary firearm registration in CA.

Actually the law is this. DOJ form #BOF4542A is for voluntarily registering a firearm (handgun or long gun) $19 fee. The only time you don't have to register a firearm is if it was given to you by your parent or child, but you could use this form to voluntarily register it. You may also have a firearm that was in your possession before firearm registration was required. You can use this form to voluntarily register it. All other types of firearm acquisitions must be registered.

Sure glad I live in the land of the free, not in CA.
75 degrees today, lots of sunshine, love shooting year around in my rust free El Camino. I have and can get all the guns I can afford/want. Do wish the laws were better but I can live with the laws better than a rust belt winter.:)

Sip, I just don't know.. A relative of mine died and left me a little model 36 it was delivered to me about a year later by a distant cousin (didn't even know him), being the upstanding citizen I am I sent in the form & check. They returned my check and informed me they could not self register the gun because it was not a close enough relative and he should have brought the gun to me to PPT before he died or the excutor of the will should have brought it to Ca for transfer. When I asked what I should do they informed me to "Sell It", that they didn't care much about who the "Seller" was, just the Buyer.. WTH?

This is one of the reasons I'm leaving California when I retire and move to Nevada. I'm fed up with the nuttiness from Sacramento, and from DOJ in particular. Give the gun to a trusted friend. Then both of you go to a local gun store and have him "sell" it to you and do a private party transfer. That should make DOJ happy.

No good deed goes unpunished...you did the right thing being honest...but had you just said you found the gun in your attic, you would have been fine...
