Thumbs up "The Hunter" -- good movie!

My wife and I watched "The Hunter" from Netflix tonight, and really enjoyed it. If you're an outdoorsman, whether a hunter yourself or not, I think you'll appreciate this move. Willem Dafoe (remember him in Full Metal Jacket?) stars, but it's the movie's scenery from the Tasmania area of outback Australia that shares top billing. The story line of Dafoe being commissioned to search out a supposedly-extinct "Tasmanian Tiger" on behalf of a shadowy bio-tech firm, while becoming involved with an Australian family whose father went missing in searching for the same creature, keeps one's attention, though is a bit predictable, but my wife and both enjoyed it and gave it about an 8 on the ol' 1-10 scale. Much to enjoy!

My brother saw it and liked it. I'll probably look for the DVD.

Some really do think that some Tasmanian tigers (Thylacines) still exist.

I think you mean "Platoon", rather than "Full Metal Jacket".

I saw that movie, The Hunter, a couple of months ago and enjoyed it. I liked the clever confrontation with the bad guy at the end...

Just for the record, the movie revolves around what might be the last Tasmanian tiger in modern times though no knows for sure.

The last known Tasmanian tiger was in 1936 which died in a zoo.
Film footage of it from 1933 is shown at the beginning of the movie. It was of the marsupial family but was a meat eater as is the Tasmanian devil, also featured in the film (the black pig like animal).

The tiger was a pretty distinctive dog-like creature.

Right you are, sir! Thanks for the correction. Loved that movie, too, even if I couldn't remember the right name of it....

Both hunters used variations of the Keppeler KS V Bullpup Sniper rifle. The two "civilian" rifles were a Winchester Model '94 and a Winchester Model 70.

Nice call, Tom!

From the Internet Movie Firearms Database (IMFDB) website:

The site also specifies that the rifle was used by both hunters in "The Hunter."

Jimmy-

I knew what you were asking. I just wanted someone to tell us, as Tom has.

Tom-

Thanks! I'd never heard of the Kessler, but I want to see the Winchesters, too.

I knew that Tasmania is a pretty big island, but I gather that it's even larger than I knew.

BTW, the Tasmanian "tiger" had stripes, but is/was more of a sort of marsupial canid in looks. You can find pics on Wiki, etc. and in books on mammals. I prefer to call it by the other name, Thylacine, as it avoids confusion with the true tiger.

There have been sightings on mainland Australia, too, but no confirmed kills or captures in many years.

The Tasmanian Devil is more like our wolverine or the Afro-Asian honey badger.

I watched it and didn't really care for it. My wife sort of got mad at me for even selecting the movie to watch.
