Default A gun guy passes away

Mike Walker who headed the team at Remington that developed the Remington 700 has passed away at 101 years of age.

Mike Walker discussing Model 700 History - YouTube

I had the distinct pleasure to meet Mike and I was able to purchase some rifles and ammunition from him. I just got a call from the retirement community where the Walkers lived and I was informed he passed away. I believe he was in fairly good health until the end. Mike was married a second time and he and his wife each have a daughter. The daughters have stated they do not want condolences.

The you tube video of him I posted is just like I knew him. He still had a gun smith shop in his home at 101 and just finished building a benchrest rifle. I believe he loved to shoot benchrest and metallic silhouette. I believe he still holds a record for a five shot group at 100 yards with a maximum dimension between shots of .047 inch!

As a great fan of the Remington Model 700, I also had the priviledge of meeting Mike a number of years ago and agree that he was a great designer and even more important, a very good and decent man. We are diminished by his passing. All my very best to his family and many friends. Joe Kent

What a life! By all accounts he was a sharp, articulate guy, and his designs will live on for many more years. RIP Mr Walker.
