We can't even have as much as a small pin knife. However last time I went they let us have our cell phones and etc. However this was only in the staging area I'm sure if you got selected they probably would not let you even have these. No coffee. just the questionaire and the film and the endless waiting.

I have a friend who is an Asst DA in Los Angeles. He told me I am a lawyer's worst nightmare=a scientist trained to analyze facts. So, I go through it just to get dismissed.

I love guys like you! 99% of the time there is always something incomplete with the state's case and it drives the scientist batty. The worst is a bookeeper I also try to keep anyone who watches CSI-the DA's hate that show cause their case doesn't eve rcome close to CSI facts-usually the LEO has to dust off the donut crumbs from the crack pipe OR drops the plaster casting of the footprint. I love it when I ask them-why didn't you run the 6 part gas chromograph on that dog poop to see if it matchs the dog in the yard who's waste was alledgedly stepped in by my client as he allegedly ran through the alleged yard. If it doesn't match, somebody is lying (meanwhile the DA is throwing up in his briefcase and the judge is giving me the old stink eye). Ahhhhh....CSI the defense lawyer's best friend.

Well that was quick, I was told I can leave and I have fulfilled my obligation to the state.

They dont take folks that are self employed.

They said the new form will have a spot to fill in and send back as not eligible so I wont have to waste the day.

Leaving the court house was quite an eye opener. It seemed more like the prison court yard

I never saw so many baggy pants and neck/ face tattoos. Yes the exit is next to the criminal court.

My friend owns several store fronts that he rents out. One Christmas he was away he asked me to look after things. Well Christmas eve first thing in the AM my phones ringing. They had a break in and I need to talk to the police. I let him in the locked areas and hes dusting for prints, taking photos. So after a little bit I ask him with a straight face, so I guess its time to arrest someone now as we need to have him sentenced in less than a half hour. He looks at me, like huh, I tell him yeah I saw CSI and everything is always wrapped up in an hour. I thought he was going to bust a gut laughing

Was in your spot just last week. 1st time I go for jury duty and don't get picked. Actually I missed getting picked in the lottery portion where I sat all day along with about 300 of my closest friends and didn't get called for screening.

Seems like every time I get called I get picked, been on probably 4 juries in the last 10 years or so.

The last time I knew both the prosecutor and defense attorneys, and my wife is an office manager for a pretty decent size firm here, they still liked me for some reason.

I know what you mean. About as funny as an attorney trying to prove correlation equals causation. I only know one attorney who can adequately define correlation. "His mom beat him so he had to be a criminal!" Sorry, got my butt beat plenty and I'm no crook (Well, at least not a MAJOR one!).

Like anyone who has taken even a beginning course in genetics or Chem 101, I think CSI is hilarious!

PS done some CSI on endangered species issues.

What gets me about CSI are those magical flashlights they are always shining around even in broad daylight and extremely well lighted.

Let me give some advice about federal judges..I know some very well. Don 't get CUTE some like nothing better than a smart *** prospective juror. Federal Judges are in for life, I only know one from Fla. that ever got booted out of the federal judiciary. We have or had one old tough guy in W/Mo. that although you thought he was sleeping , he never missed a beat....While serving in his court room I actually heard him say in front of a jury and the gallery..." Mr defense attorney You don't really expect this jury to believe that fairy tail do you" The attorney was so taken back he was unable to speak for what seemed like a eternity. Now what do you think his credibility was to the jury...Those District Federal Judges are about the closest thing to God on earth while they are in their courtroom.....Sometimes it was hard to keep from laughing however you had better not.....My experience in State Courts is that the judges are far more careful what they say. To many appeal avenues for motions for a new trial.....About 15 years assigned to the courts I learned nothing is really surprising....I only heard of one Federal Judge getting impeached for misconduct, that was that Hastings guy from Fla ( I think that was his name..When you walk into a federal courtroom you are in a different world with one boss.....Period!!!!

Don't even get me started on CSI! I actually had a person ask me if I was going to dust for fingerprints on a mailbox that had been ball batted. I told her I was pretty sure if they had drove by and smacked it with their hand, it would still be there and I would just go look for a 1 handed kid. She just stared at me blankly.

I probably have told this one before... I've always been able to avoid being picked for jury duty because of prior employment by the SO, family in the legal profession, et. al. The last time I was called though, I was selected as an alternate and had to sit through the entire jury selection process. The defense attorney and the county attorney first went through the whole process and then turned to me and the other alternate. They questioned the other fellow first and finally got to me. After all the usual questions about our understanding of the principles involved, the county attorney asked; "Is there any other reason you feel you should not serve on this jury?" I waited as long as I could and finally replied, "Well, it doesn't make any difference to me, but you probably should know that the defense attorney is my brother-in-law." The CA nearly had a stroke, sputtering, "J-J-Joh-n, is your b-b-brother-in-law? And you don't think that would make a d-difference?" "Naw", I said. "I'd probably be harder on him than I would on you." The judge nearly fell off his chair laughing. That was about 20 years ago and that's the last time my name has ever been picked.

An attorney in Jacksonville actually tried something similar in a criminal case several years ago. Defendant's name was Adolf Hitler Jones! Attorney said with a name like that he had no chance to be anything other than what he was, a career criminal and they should let him go. Fortunately the jury was not stupid enough to fall for that. He received an all expense paid vacation at beautiful Florida State Penitentiary in the lovely town of Raiford.

I just filled out a questionaire for jury duty sent to my by the Federal Court in Great Falls, 421 miles away. I really hope I don't get picked, it's a long haul. My employment will probably keep me off tho, otherwise I wouldn't mind serving...

My sons used to help me sort brass in their younger days, seperating the 9mm from the .40 S&W from the .45 ACP.

One night we were watching CSI and they were showing a 9mm case as evidence from a murder where supposedly a Glock 17 was used. When they showed a closeup of the case with a round indention in the primer, my 9 year old son said, "that case wasn't fired out of that Glock, those idiots should know a Glock leaves a square indention on the primer!"

I laughed until my guts hurt.

His name was Alcee Hastings. After being impeached and removed from the bench, he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives and was elected. Haven't heard about him for a while but probably he's still there

Nothing keeps me from my nap.

Last time I was on jury duty the judge brought us donuts each morning! It was election year, and the state paid for his campaign bribe. You'd better bet I voted for him. He even came in on some of the breaks to visit with us. Our current Circuit Court Judge used to be my neighbor. We were pretty good friends (back then he was my state rep). I even worked some for his campaign, picking up yard signs. It seems that when the robe gets hung up, they're just regular guys.

So the rule here seems to be if you buy me a donut, you can count on my vote! I'm cheap.

As for the contempt thing....

We had a 2 week personal injury trial. I was in the 2nd row of seats, sitting next to a very nice looking girl. Might as well make friends because we were there for 2 full weeks, plus. So up on the stand is the plaintiff. She was overweight and not very sightly. And she wore womens suits that emphasized her girth. After lunch she took the stand again and as she sat down the girl and I both openly gasped out loud. And of course everyone looked at us. Uh-oh. But the judge just got a funny look on his face and didn't say anything. We were scared. So her testimony wore on for a few hours and the judge called a break. We were all herded out of the courtroom and into our holding cell/jury room. And instantly the judge appeared. He looked right at us and said, "after this is over I want to hear what the gasp was for. But until then we could tell no one." OK, that was pretty hard to keep to ourselves. But none of the jurors had the nerve to ask.

So the trial was over, and we gave her a pittance. Probably more than she deserved. Note to lawyers, make sure you have a pretty client. Anyway.... we went back to the jury room to collect our stuff. And again like clockwork in comes the judge (here comes da judge). It had been killing him and the jurors, but they already knew because we discussed it. The chunky chick had spent her morning testifying about all her pain and how she had to wear the tens unit to keep it manageable. But as she seated herself, we could clearly see the unit with the wires dangling and none plugged into it. And she testified for almost 3 hours that way, never showing any sign of discomfort. Talk about a screwup! The judge listened and laughed. Said we did just what we were there for. Not just to listen to what they said, but what they did. Often a person can lie or tilt their words, but their actions can still show through. Yes, we were relieved we weren't in trouble. We rode the elevator down a few minutes later and admitted it was fun having a secret from the rest of the world. And I wonder if the defense or plaintiff's attorney ever heard the story. We had 10 other jurors and one judge we had to tell.

I have jury duty on Thursday. I am pro gun, anti government (anti big government, to be more specific), and I have been in a car accident. Most likely, I will be dismissed immediately.

I can follow up a bit.

I was dismissed for being self employed because it would cause a financial hardship. How many companies can shut down and do no work for the length of a trial, very few.

These were civil cases one was going to last until the end of JUNE!!

A few others would have lasted a week or so.

When they tell you about the cases some of them you feel sorry for the plaintiff and some you kinda roll your eyes at.

I came away being glad that I dont have to deal in this system. It seems a sad place, dealing with peoples problems, airing dirty laundry.

I would guess that the pool was around eighty people. Strangely few people spoke to one another.

I didnt hear any smart Alec remarks...

I'm proud to serve on a jury. I don't know how many countries have trial by jury but I'll guess its not all of them. And I always press to be the foreman...gives me a little more influence over the CSI watchers!

Trial by Jury is as crucial a right as the right to carry and own arms..It separates us from all others. Let us never lose any right. Each right lost is a step into dictatorship. We may not agree with how those rights are administrated but they keep us free..Yes jury duty is a pain, but the day we lose that right is the first day of dictatorship. Many have given the ultimate sacrifice to insure these right. It would be a sin to freely give them up because of convenience.
