Vietnam Veterans day...
I believe that tomorrow, 3-30, is designated as Vietnam Veterans day. Today, 3-29-75 was the day of the panic at Danang when world airways airliners (2) went to pick up "women and children." I'm believe the tape of that mess in available on line somewhere; the best one being related by a stewardess on the flight, and Ed Daily the president of the airline.
WELCOME HOME.

Two of my high school friends and one of my college friends died in Vietnam. Their supreme sacrifices and those of thousands of others in that war should never be forgotten. Talking to the sons of these men who never got to know their fathers is much more than you will ever need to appreciate the terrible loss. All gave some, some gave all. God bless.
John

It's about time! I wasn't in Vietnam but I was on Okinawa. What I saw after I got back and at the end of the war made me ... What I saw was a country that treated the returning troops as murderers and worse. They were spit on, had things thrown at them and reviled for doing what others did in later years. Our troops returning from the middle east are hailed as heroes and thanked for their service and well they should. Out troops returning from Vietnam weren't and now some forty years later we give them a memorial day. Too late for some and, in my mind anyway, almost too late for the others. I'm glad to see it but it still hurts to know it took forty years.
I don't care where they at=re or who they are all I want is ALL our troops to come home safe and healthy.
Rant over, Pecos
Mods if this is improper delete it I've gotten it off my chest.

You can take it and stick it your ***. Spell it how you want to. PTSD was not recognized by the military and to have that mess shoved down your throat when you got home. Well, I'll have none of it thank you. My blood boils when I think of it. You so called peace lovers forgot who created that mess. We're all supposed to smile and make it all go away but it won't and never will. To my brothers in arms I thank you for tolerating an ungrateful nation. To the ungrateful nation you can go pound sand. And don't patronize me by liking this post. If you're not a vet you don't get it anyway. Vietnam Vet Day my behind.

I guess, as usual, I am in the minority. I don't need a Vietnam Veterans' Day.
We lost that war. Lost! Not on the battlefield, but here in this country. The majority of Americans despised us or, if they did not, they kept quiet and let a vocal minority including the then-major news media push that idea along with the unjustness of our actions. Killing babies, bombing innocent civilians, killing, killing, killing....
I've long since made peace with myself over Vietnam. But, for years I avoided the VA Hospital (yeah, I'm a cheerleader for VA health care now, but...) because of the folks out there running around in camouflage shirts, berets, boonie hats, etc., and who seemed to only want to talk about Nam and tell war stories of which I suspect most were baloney.
Today, I rarely see anyone there like that, and, if I do, they are generally residents of the psyc sections.
Once in a while I run into someone who still wants to talk about Nam, and, if it's about C-Rats, beer, maybe even girls, then great. But if the conversation shifts to the war, then I either change the subject or, as politely as possible, disappear.
I was 17 when I first set foot in Nam and I'm 65 now. I've had a relatively long, full life and don't live in the past. I think I understand why so many WW2 vets never talked about their war and I think I feel the same way.
I've seen the Wall twice and cried like a baby both times. As a matter of fact, it's the only time my wife has ever seen me cry.
I'd just like to continue with my life as long as God lets me stay here without constantly being reminded of a very bad place a very long time ago.
I still see men who are severely injured from that war, and there's a guy who shoots trap at my Club who has no legs after stepping on a mine. Not real glorious, not real pretty. But, for sure, real.
Bob

You mean I get a vacation day tomorrow and this is the first I hear of it?
Wait, Saturday, guess I'll just lift a glass in memory of my Brothers and Sisters who gave all. And Salute to all who served and now serve!

My father is a Marine. He was there 65-66 as a heavy equipment mechanic.
My best friends father was in the Army. He was on a plane on the tarmac, ready to take off, when they turned the plane around and told them that we were pulling out.
God Bless every soul who served, and those left behind, in that and every war we have and will ever fight.

I have never heard it mentioned in the media. I first heard about it in the VFW Magazine, I think. I'm not big for network news, but I'll bet there ain't much, if anything, on it, but that's OK, we should be accustomed to that by now. I'll keep supporting the latest herd, and ours too. I have forgiven, and I am free.
P.S. to the mods-somehow my status as a Veteran got lost about the time I became a bronze supporter, can you fix that, or show me how to do it? Thanks.

I believe every day is Veteran's Day. Without them we wouldn't have the freedoms we now enjoy. Nam is a part of me, I don't need a day to remind me.
