I have never been delayed during a gun purchase. This is a 6 day delay. I have never been in any trouble of any kind and have recently purchased firearms. I even had a Concealed carry a few years ago but let it expire. The thing that worries me is the fact that depression runs in my family and I have had problems with it. I have never been in the hospital or admitted, but i have had to take meds for several years. I know there is a new law coming out as we speak but I don't know how if it would affect me. I will be devasted if denied since I have had a love for firearms for 35 years. Wish me luck!

Do NOT panic. Got delayed myself one day after several rather routine purchases. The clerk told me not to worry - my app hit during a busy period when "the system" was overwhelmed. I imagined all kinds of scenarios or clerical mistakes on my part, then cleared routinely shortly thereafter. LESSON, THOUGH, on how the system may be "overwhelmed" and refuse your purchase with prescribed "universal background checks" if dictated by law.

As others have said, don't worry. My buddy went with his brother to each buy a gun. He had to wait for a few days, while his brother walked out with his. No big deal.

Why are you waiting 6 days? Under law if the FFL does not hear back from NCIS they're allowed to release the gun after 72 business hours, I believe.

One thing the keeps me

I have the same problem but one thing that keeps me from being depressed is owning and shooting my firearms.

Some stores have a policy that requires a longer wait than 3 days. Walmart for example will not sell a firearm to a purchaser when the transaction is in a "delayed" status. Company policy requires that they hold the firearm up to a max of 30 days, or, until a "proceed" call is received from NICS. If 30 days elapses with no "proceed" call from NICS, the application is voided and the person who wanted to make the purchase would have to start all over again. The store in my hometown holds the firearm for 30 days and then 24 hours more, just to make sure. I know this is the case 'cause I bought a 1022 this morning that had been "on hold" since March 9th.

Arkie I would not worry ,the instant check is behind on everything. The LGS I frequent has has more holds than ever before. After 3 days you are good to go unless they respond with a denial.

When mistakes are made the guvmnt is usually part of it. Over the past year I either walk out or am delayed, up to 3 days once. I have waited, drank a little coffee and the call comes right back. I think at times they are over loaded, once they said their system was down.

The scary one was a stinking little LNIB Remington bolt 22 LR that came in with a bunch of sell them as quickly as possible estate guns. I gave very little for it. The Fed's OK'd me and I took it home. A few day's later the LGS called me and said the FEDs called and said I was denied and should not have been cleared nor given the gun, I went home grabbed the 22, took it back so it would be on the LGS shelf, walked in, my buddy said never seen anything like this, the phone rang, it was the FEDs, they mentioned my name, my buddy said he is standing here right now looking over the counter at the gun that is behind the counter! My buddy said OK and hung up. He turned and said the cops are on the way.

Well anger went to what the heck! Then he smiled and told me the FEDs made an error the first time. Someone typed in a wrong digit and my approval came up, it took them several hours to realize the mistake. I was not the one they wanted.

Geez, in addition to wanting to register stuff, they now want to give honest gun owners heart attacks.

Arky, relax buddy, it will be OK.

Oh by the way, my buddy the LGS owner, it took a while but I got REVENGE. He carries a 36 on his hip and when he runs next door to get a soda he takes it off and sets it on top of the gun safe. I was walking in one day just as he was running to get his soda, his partner took the 36 and hid it. He looked on the safe, then by the phone, then started looking everywhere. I had my back to him looking at old WW2 1911's. He is getting flustered, it is time to strike! I walked over and asked him how business had been, how his wife is doing and casually mentioned I saw he had sold a 36 to a couple of downtown folks that were leaving when I arrived. I said you were to let me know if a 36 came in. His eyes enlarged, he asked me if those two guys had a 36. Why yes. Why would I get ticked unless you sold them what you had promised to me, price depending. All the other guys were behind him waiting to explode. And why would you let them carry a just purchased gun out with out it being in a case? I said do you remember telling me the cops are on the way? Revenge is mine. His partner set the 36 next to him and the laughing began.

Try having a Green Card. Some stores look unhappy when the NICS person tells them there will be a delay while they check my immigration status. Others just laugh and say, "Are you the one foreigner dumb enough to tell them you are here?" The delay varies from 15 minutes to a couple of hours.

A lot of people have been getting delayed, more so since the election and resultant buying panic. My son has had two delays and a proceed since November. He had an old case that the disposition had been entered into NCIC incorrectly. It took him until last month to get the originating state to fix that.

Another friend of mine has been delayed since Christmas. No reason that anyone can tell, he just gets delayed. He filed for a UPIN and the FBI sat on it for months. Not intentionally, they are just swamped with work. He finally called one of his US Senators and spoke with a staffer. Like magic he got a notice on Monday that his paperwork was approved and he'd get his UPIN in a few days.

I wouldn't worry about a new law coming out regarding background checks. I certainly wouldn't worry about anything related to your medical condition being involved. Unless you were involuntarily committed by a judge to mental health facility, there is no record.

Lots of data being put into the NICS system all the time.
What was not there a few days ago may be in there now and cause a 'delay' return on your NICS check.
Someone else with a name, dob, alias, SS#, ect close to yours may offer up a hit that will have to be researched by someone else there before clearing it.
Even transposed first & last names, initials and dob numbers will hit if the system is set up that way. Tryin' to catch them sneaky criminals you know.
It's never easy when the Gov'ments involved.

HANG IN THERE. Stuff sometimes just happens. It could be a computer glitch, or someone with a similar name but with less than a stellar record popped up along with your info. They'll sort it all out. Their just being thorough.

I get delayed almost exactly half of the time when I buy guns, with no rhyme or reason.
One day a handgun will go right through, the next time a long gun gets delayed, and vice versa.
A delay can happen for any number of reasons, and there's a good chance you'll get a "Proceed" before the 6 day wait is up. If you don't hear from your LGS, call in a couple days and see if they've heard back from NICS.
Half of my delays don't go the full 6 days (I had one come back less than 2 hours later).

In the mean time, DON'T WORRY. A delay means nothing.

I was used to being delayed, I too have a green card. But my last purchase, of a No. 5 Mk. 1 went right through. I was pleasantly surprised.

I have found that if I purchase before 1:00 pm on a week day, the FFL receives a proceed. When I buy late in the day or on a weekend, I will get the delay nearly every time.

Sort of what I see. I bought a Colt several weeks ago late in the afternoon and the next week I bought a Model 12 Heavy Duck right after they opened in the AM. Both were treated as you reported.
