Default Custom Wood brand Farrant copy grips from the 1970's

Bumping this since more of the Custom Wood grips are showing up on auctions sites mistakenly labeled as Farrant and at Farrant prices.

The quickest 'tell' is that the Custom Wood grips are symmetrical left to right at the top while Farrant are not.

=========================

When we were digging through Joe Kent's grip box last month, we found a pair of what I think are "Custom Wood" checkered "Combat" grips that were a Farrant style grip briefly marketed in the late 1970's and are sometimes now mistakenly labeled as Farrant.

Ad copy: Custom Wood, Inc. Parsonage Crossing, Westbrook, CT

The checkering is better than I can do, but crude in comparison to Farrant.
Not immediately apparent in the pictures is how fat they are, roughly twice the size of Farrants. They could probably be whittled down to make a usable grip, but more easily so with a non-checkered pair.

The goop in the checkering brushed off with a toothbrush.

For additional documentation, see the grip article by James Mason in the September-October, 1978 American Handgunner which is available as a free download on the American Handgunner web site.

If memory serves, the Stocks that my friend SG-688 posted above came with a K-38 that I got from a buddy who is a retired Police Lt. from our local department. In total there were 3 or 4 sets of stocks of one kind or another that came to me on the same trade.

Realizing that this is an old thread, I wanted to renew it as a means to learn more about this now defunct grip manufacturer.

I recently picked these up for my Security Six and find them of high quality that fit my hands very nicely.

I'm attempting to access the referenced American Handgunner article but no luck yet.

Anyone have any first hand knowledge they would like to share?

Edit to add that I was able to download the article. Very informative I'm really glad I found these.

The rest of the 1978 magazine was a good read as well!
